Maureen Shea Interview

SheaOn Thursday December 3rd in the Grand Ballroom at the Manhattan Center “The Real Million Dollar Baby” Maureen Shea (13-2, 7KO) will look to fulfill a life-long dream by capturing a world championship when she takes on Jenna Shiver (9-4-1, 2KO) for the interim WBA Female Super Bantamweight Title on the Joe DeGuardia Star Boxing promoted “Hustler Boxing” card. The bout, which is being aired live on Versus (the first ever televised female championship on the network), is scheduled for ten rounds in the 122 lb. division.

Q: Maureen how has training been for your upcoming fight?

MS: Training has been great! I took about two weeks off after my last fight. I had to regroup, reassess and re-plan. After doing that I was right back in the gym.

Q: I am told you have a new trainer in your corner now, Tommy Brooks. When did you start working with Tommy?

MS: I began to train at the PAL gym in Hackensack, NJ with Tommy around mid August. I wanted a fresh start. I am grateful that I am working with such a well respected trainer. I also have Aroz “Terrific” Gist in my corner now. Some might recognize him from his work with Kendall Holt. Neither one has ever worked with a female before and we are really having a great time in the gym. We are focused, but it is fun!

Q: What does Tommy bring to your game?

MS: Tommy brings World Class experience having worked with over 17 World Champions. His knowledge of the sport, his demeanor and his approach as a trainer has enabled me to be a more intelligent and well rounded fighter. With his assistant Gist, a big part of our training regiment consists of strategy, as well as, studying and reviewing opponents styles to initiate an effective fight plan.

Q: What do you know about your opponent Shiver?

MS: She seems like a strong fighter who comes prepared to fight and I am sure the fans won’t be disappointed, come December 3rd.

Q: You are moving down in weight, what was the reasoning behind the move?

MS: I have always known that I could get down to 122lbs. My nutritionist and conditioning coach Robert Ferguson has been waiting patiently for this day. It was always our plan, now it is time.

Q: Being from the Bronx you are a huge Yankee fan, do you plan on honoring them in anyway at your fight on the 3rd?

MS: Those who come to the fight shall see how much of a true Yankee fan I am! I can’t reveal the secret!

Q: What will winning a championship in your home state of New York mean to you?

MS: Words can not describe what winning a championship in New York would mean to me. To be from New York and to have a large fan base in New York share this moment with me is a dream come true.

Q: Who wins, Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao?

MS: I can’t take anything away from Floyd Mayweather. But Manny Pacquiao is the COMPLETE PACKAGE. Mentally physically and spiritually.

Q: Anything to say in closing?

MS: I just want to thank everyone who has contributed in making my dream a possibility. Joe DeGuardia and Star Boxing for giving me this opportunity. My Sponsor’s, FAB Communications in the Bronx, and Platzner Intl. And Most importantly my FANS who I feel are like extended family, for always sticking with me through thick and thin.
