Why Mayweather will fight Pacqiuao

by Dan Lewis – On the 19th September this year at the MGM Grand, Floyd Mayweather beat up Juan Manuel Márquez for twelve rounds. A fight when billed almost everyone thought Mayweather would win, Marquez a fighter who has won five World titles at three different weights was not given a real chance by the boxing media. At the end of the fight Marquez nursed a swollen face and bloody nose whilst Mayweather looked as if he hadn’t even broken in to a sweat. It was easy for Mayweather that night he didn’t move out of second gear, his defence was impeccable and his accuracy was equally impressive.. This was Mayweather’s first fight for twenty one months and he looked as if he had had been in the gym for every day of that time.

There was one thing I found very interesting in Mayweather’s selection of Marquez as his ‘comeback fight’. Marquez has fought Pacquiao twice before and we all know the controversy that surrounded in both those fights (I do believe Pacquiao won both bouts by the way). Marquez was the ‘other’ star Featherweight through to Lightweight apart from Pacquiao. Marquez in a way is the closest thing to fighting Pacquiao , without actually fighting Pacquiao. I don’t doubt that Marquez was picked as run up to the Pacquiao fight, same size…not as great speed I’ll grant you but a smaller come forward, aggressive fighter none the less.

It was reported that ‘Money’ came out of retirement because of Mr.Taxman and I don’t doubt that was the main reason why Mayweather stepped back into the ring, but when Mayweather ‘retired’ he was the pound for pound King and now there is serious debate whether Pacquiao has surpassed him. This must hurt for Mayweather despite his brash and arrogant image, he is a man who prides himself on being the best and he has been, people may not like him but they can’t deny how good a boxer this man is.

All the talk of Mayweather running scared and avoiding Pacquiao may be true, but I cant see that myself, I see a man who is starting the promotion for the fight and already trying to get as much of the purse as he possibly can. Mayweather wants this fight, he wants to part of a fight that could make more money than any other in history and more importantly he wants to be called the best.

At some point next year the two best boxers in the world can finally settle who is the ‘Pound for Pound Champion” and make more money than they ever have done before, for themselves, their promoters and for the TV Networks, in my mind there is no reason why this fight won’t happen.

Who will win, is another matter.
