Warren tells Joe Calzaghe to focus

01.02.07 – Frank Warren has played down rumours of a possible July showdown between Joe Calzaghe and Bernard Hopkins – and says the Welshman must focus on his April 7 clash with Peter Manfredo Jnr first. Calzaghe is targeting a fight in America this summer with the backing of TV giants HBO. But Warren says the only way it will happen is with an impressive display against Contender runner up Manfredo Jnr. Calzaghe defends his WBO and Ring Super-Middleweight titles against the American at the Millennium Stadium, Cardiff, on Easter weekend..

“Joe needs to look good and box well that night, and it won’t be a walk in the park,” said Warren.

“It’s all very well talking about the summer, but as far as I’m concerned Joe can’t get too far ahead of himself because in boxing there’s always a danger you can take your eye off the ball.”

“Manfredo Jnr is a very credible and very dangerous opponent, and I know he feels that he will pull off an upset.”

Calzaghe, 34, boasts a perfect 42-0 record, and is aiming to make a landmark 20th defence of his world title on the big Millennium Stadium bill.
