Corrie Sanders Destroys Colin Wilson!

25.11.06 – By Jeff Bastasini: Corrie Sanders (41-3, 31 KO’s) the former WBO heavyweight champion, moved one step closer to challenging for another heavyweight title, by destroying Colin Wilson (32-19, 20 KO’s) in two brutal rounds, on Friday night at the Convention Centre, in Mafikeng, South Africa. The Australian fighter, Wilson, seemed to be too brave for his own good, by attempting to trade punches early on with Sanders, who is noted for being an early round knockout artist. Not surprisingly, Wilson soon found himself in trouble early in the 2nd round, when Sander’s devastating left hook began connecting with frequency..

Wilson attempted to back off, retreating to the ropes. However, Sander’s quickly closed the distance, and landed a flurry of punches. Finally, Sanders landed a huge body shot that dropped Wilson to the canvas, badly hurt. The referee stepped in halt the bout, when he saw that Wilson, 34, was not in shape to continue fighting.

From appearances, the 6’5,” Wilson, looked like he didn’t know what hit him, so accustomed to fighting lesser fighters, mostly from Australia. He was simply outclassed from the opening bell, and seemingly not ready for the type of power and speed Sanders brought to the bout.

Sanders, though somewhat rusty, considering that he hadn’t fought in roughly two years, he looked to be in his classic punching form. I saw no visible drop off of his previous formidable power.

Next up, Sanders hopes to be fighting a better opponent, leading up to a possible elimination bout for the WBA heavyweight title. Regardless of his age (40-years old), his hand speed and power is far more superior than the other heavyweight challengers, in my estimation. If he can eventually get a shot at Nikolay Valuev, the WBO heavyweight champion, I can see him giving him a lot problems with his powerful left hand.
