Danny Garcia and Willie Nelson win gold in Finland

25.10.05 – Two United States’ boxers took home gold from the 2005 Tammer Tournament, October 10-13 in Tampere, Finalnd. Lightweight Danny Garcia (Philadelphia, Pa.) and light welterweight Willie Nelson (Cleveland, Ohio) both won their first international titles at the event which featured nine of the 2005 Under 19 National Champions..

The event was the first major international competition for Garcia who put on a show at the 2005 Under 19 National Championships. Garcia won three bouts en route to his gold medal in Finland, defeating Erik Roth of Sweden in his quarterfinal bout, beating Jossi Koivula of Finland in semifinal action and winning his championship bout over Farajd Almatbole Derouiche of Jordan. Nelson recorded two strong victories in Finland, stopping Lasse Kaela-Peays of Finland in the semifinal round and winning the gold medal on a third round stoppage of Mark Hastie of Scotland.

In addition to the two gold medals, light flyweight Vincent Montoya (Cheyenne, Wyo.) took home a silver medal from the competition. Montoya will now prepare for the 2005 World Amateur Boxing Championships in Mianyang City, China in November. Flyweight David Gaspar (Wilmington, Calif.); bantamweight Shemuel Pagan (New York, N.Y.); featherweight Luis Del Valle (Newburgh, N.Y.); middleweight Mike Montoya, Jr. (Colorado Springs, Colo.); and heavyweight Bear Richardson (Philadelphia, Pa.) all won bronze medals at the event.
