Michael Jennings Hunts Down

22.03.05 – It’s hunting season for English Welterweight Champion Michael Jennings and Gavin Down is in his sights for the first defence of his title on April 22 at the Barnsley Metrodome. Promoter Frank Warren in association with Koncrete Promotions is delighted to return to Barnsley with Fight Skool featuring the best in up-and-coming young British talent..

And Jennings fits the bill perfectly.

The Chorley fighter has broken through in the last year as a major talent in the domestic 147lb division.

Known as the Lurcher or Silent Hunter for his love of rabbit and hare hunting, Jenning’s slick boxing style with improved punching power now stands at an impressive unbeaten 25-fight record with 10 KO’s.

He won the English title with a devastating display over the vastly experienced veteran Chris Saunders – despite a flash knockdown in the first round – in October last year retiring him in the fifth round

Jennings is relishing his showdown against his Chesterfield rival.

“Like my dogs hunt rabbits and hares – I will hunt Down,” said Jennings coldly.

“In that respect James Hare would be a great name to have on my record but my stablemate David Barnes, the British Welterweight Champion, has already beaten him but Down will be a good scalp to have,”

“I’m expecting a tough fight against him, he’s a tough kid who’s had some hard fights in his career against some good fighters like Bradley Pryce but I will beat him.”

On the undercard, Pontypool welterweight hot-shot Tony Docherty features in an eight-round contest as heads towards his first title shot.

The travelling man has stormed to 13-0 with 7 KO’s and has attracted a lot of attention with his all-action, hard-hitting style.

Record-breaking former British Light-Middleweight champion Ryan Rhodes is back returns to action and it won’t be long until he gets a third World title opportunity.

The Sheffield switch-hitter recently returned to Sports Network where he began his career under Warren to became the youngest and fastest outright winner of the Lonsdale belt.

Rhodes will feature in a six-round contest and is aiming for a good performance for his first fight since April last year.

Completing the show are Sheffield light-heavyweight John Ibbertson, Rotherham cruiserweights John Anthony and Neil Dawson, Barnsley middleweight Rob Burton and Mexborough light-welterweight Gwyn Wale who are all big tickets seller from the Koncrete stable.

Tickets, priced at £50, £35 and £25, are available from the Sports Network Box Office on 01992 550 888, Koncrete Promotions on 01142 750 303 or online at www.frankwarren.tv
