14.07.04 – Ringside Promotions By Sycuan, boxing’s newest and fastest -growing promotional entry, is ready, willing and able to promote a true tournament involving all the world champions at 122 pounds, it was announced today by Glenn Quiroga.
Quiroga, who is also tribal treasurer for the Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation, issued the battle cry for the Super Bantamweight Sweepstakes Tournament.
“We proudly promote the undefeated WBO (World Boxing Organization) titleholder, Joan Guzman, and we and his manager, Rafael Guerrero, are willing to put him into the ring against any and all of the world champions,” said Quiroga.
Oscar Larios is the World Boxing Council champion, Mahyar Monshipour is the World Boxing Association champ and Israel Vasquez is the newly crowned International Boxing Federation king.
“This can be a fantastic shot in the arm for this weight class,” Quiroga said. “We see it as the last world champ standing showing that he is really the man in the division. It also would produce a real strong challenger to move up to 126 pounds and face the winner of the Manny Pacquaio-Juan Manuel Marquez rematch.”
Ringside Promotions By Sycuan Vice President of Boxing Scott Woodworth echoed Quiroga’s concept.
“This is a sure fire way to raise the level of interest in this weight class,” Woodworth said. “This is something that we believe is in the best interests of both the various champs and the paying customers. So, it’s a winner for the fighters and the fans, and who can be against that?”
The exact dates and location of the tournament bouts will be determined.
Quiroga said Ringside Promotions By Sycuan is contacting Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Larios’ business, and the Acaries Brothers in Paris, who represent the interests of Monshipour. It also is believed Israel Vasquez’s manager, Frank Espinoza, is keen on the idea.
Vasquez has been declared a promotional free agent by the California State Athletic Commission and is in contractual talks with Ringside Promotions By Sycuan.
Guzman has a record of 21-0 with 17 knockouts, Larios has a mark of 52-3-1 with 35 knockouts, Monshipour’s ledger is 25-2-2 with 16 knockouts and Vasquez has a log of 36-3 with 26 knockouts.
Guzman and Larios won their super bantamweight championships in 2002, Monshipour won his super bantamweight title in 2003 and Vasquez won his junior featherweight crown this year.
