Interview with Patrick Nwanu

24.04.04 – By Ike Enwereuzor – www.Jacboxing.com – The Broadway Boxing event at Hammerstein Ballroom, New York City promoted by Lou DeBella Entertainment Thursday night 4/23 produced several exciting bouts including heavyweight propects such as Patrick “Punchin Pat” Nwanu, who improved his boxing career record to (8-1) 3KO’s by defeating former unbeaten Alexis Mejias (7-1).

Patrick Nwanu is two-time golden Gloves champion in 2 different states, New York and Georgia. He started his professional Boxing career in Novemember 21 2000, in Dickson City, Pa by stopping
William Bolar in round three. In his second pro battle June 2001, Nwanu lost his first and only fight to Russell Shiflett by fourth round decision. Three years ago was the last time this former Golden Gloves Champion lost in the ring.

Ike: How would you describe your performance tonight against Alexis Mejias?

Nwanu: Alexis is one of Duva’s Boxers. I was the underdog but I proved to them I was a better fighter. I’ll rate my performance an 8+. It was not much of a difference, the only thing was he was a little stronger than my other opponents, and he weighed more than me. He was about 20 pounds heavier than me. This is the fourth time I have beaten an undefeated fighter. I’m alway the underdog. I thank Lou Dibella for giving me the opportunity to fight on the card.

Ike: What can you tell our readers about your fight with David Chappell at Blue Horizon, Philadelphia?

Nwanu: It was a good fight for me. I learned a lot from that fight, and I won a unanimous decision over him. I said if I can’t beat this guy, I must retire.

Ike: What’s your impression of the top ten heavyweights?

Nwanu: The division is quite interesting. It’s up for grabs and I’m moving up there. I think all the heavyweights out there are about the same class.

Ike: What’s your thoughts on the Byrd-Golota fight?

Nwanu: I think it was a great fight, and I’d like to see them do it again. It was their best performance in a long time.

Ike: Please tell us what was your amateur record before you return pro?

Nwanu: I had a record of something like 17-4, but my four losses where to top guys in America. I like to compete with the best.

Ike: What titles did you win while fighting as an amateur besides the Gloves?

Nwanu: I won about five championships during my brief amateur career. I had two Golden Gloves, in New York and Georgia. I also won two state championships, plus the Northeast team championship for USA Metro Boxing in 1996.

Ike: What made you decide to Box?

Nwanu: I was always into martial arts and things like that, so I just tried Boxing and liked it. I just got stuck with it and I really love boxing now. I’m looking forward to becoming one of the greatest champions in the world.

Ike: What message do you have for your fans?

Nwanu: I want to thank all my fans that came out to see my fight, plus those who saw it it on TV. I love them all, and I wish them all best of luck. I want to give a shout out to all New Yorkers, also.

Ike: What’s next for you?

Nwanu: I’m hoping to get back to action in May or June. If anyone has a fight for me, just get in touch with me. I’m willing to fight anywhere, any day, if it’s the right deal.
