The Transnational Boxing Rankings Board: More Support is Needed

On 18th July, 2015, Arthur Abraham won his fourth encounter with Robert Stieglitz via sixth round KO, successfully defending his WBO belt and maintaining his position atop The Ring super middleweight ratings. A fight between Abraham and James DeGale would crown a new Ring Magazine champion – they are the number one and number two rated fighters in their division respectively. Potentially, if these two 168 pounders fail to negotiate a fight, DeGale could in fact fight the number five rated Gilberto Ramirez for the once prestigious Ring title.

Andre Ward, one of the most accomplished champions the super middleweight division has ever had is nowhere to be seen in the current Ring ratings.

Scott Quigg: “I Do Believe I’m The Best In The World”

Scott Quigg: "I Do Believe I'm The Best In The World"

WBA (reg) 122 lb champion Scott Quigg despatched his toughest foe to date – Kiko Martinez – in considerable style last night in Manchester, blowing away the Spaniard with what appeared to be consummate ease, setting up some big-money fights against the likes of Nonito Donaire – and God willing for the British fans- Carl Frampton, who survived his own scares in El Paso against tough Mexican Alejandro Gonzalez Jr.

Talking to iFLtv immediately following the victory, the Bury man was upbeat about the future, insisting it is those big fights he so desires, against the best of the best, and after last night’s win, he hopes they will be a little easier to come by;

Carl Frampton-Scott Quigg – Now who wins!?

Carl Frampton-Scott Quigg - Now who wins!?

Forget Amir Khan-Kell Brook; the best all-British showdown that can be made right now is Carl Frampton-Scott Quigg. And, in light of the respective showings of the two champions last night, this potentially massive showdown has seen a shift in fan opinion.

Go back to when the fight was first spoken about as a sure-fire sizzler, and Frampton had a slight edge to win in the opinion of maybe 60-percent of the fans/experts. Now, with Quigg blowing away Kiko Martinez – the same Martinez who twice went to war with Frampton – it is no longer the Irishman who is the perceived favourite. Frampton’s stock went down a little with his up-from-the-floor battle with a determined and very tough Alejandro Gonzalez Junior, and now Quigg Vs. Frampton looks like a gamble for the Barry McGuigan-managed star.

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Defeats Marcos Reyes Saturday On SHOWTIME From El Paso

Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. earned a unanimous decision (97-92, 98-91, 96-93) over Marcos Reyes in the main event of SHOWTIME CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING on Saturday in front of 9,245 at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas.

Reyes was the more active fighter – he doubled Chavez’s output – but simply couldn’t hurt his larger opponent. Following a loss at light heavyweight last April, Chavez decided to attempt to campaign at super middleweight.

Scott Quigg v Kiko Martinez

Regular WBA World bantamweight champion Scott Quigg, 31-0-2 (23KO’s), laid down a marker the size of the Manchester Arena tonight blasting former World super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez, 32-6 (24KO’s) to pieces inside two rounds, in front of a packed hometown crowd.

Midway through the 2nd round, Quigg took absolutely everything from his Spanish opponent – who seemed to be warming to the task after an encouraging opener – with an enormous right uppercut that dipped his legs and left him laid on the canvas moments later following a further assault from the vicious champion.

Chavez Jr defeats Reyes; Imam defeats Angulo

A very heavy looking Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (49-2-1, 32 KOs) put in an uneven performance in beating Marcos Reyes (33-3, 24 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Saturday night in Chavez Jr’s bounce back fight at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso, Texas. Chavez Jr. lost his last fight to Andrze Fonfara last April. But Chavez Jr. had nothing to fear tonight in dragging a weak-punching middleweight in 27-year-old Reyes up to super middleweight in order to enjoy a weight advantage.

Chavez Jr. was cut over his left eye in the 9th round from a clash of heads. After being cut, Chavez Jr. marched around the ring complaining about the head-butt until the referee took a cut and took a point away from Reyes. It looked very strange; as if the referee did this in response to Chavez Jr’s complaining rather than doing it based on what he felt was the right thing to do.

Frampton gets up off the canvas to beat Gonzalez

El Paso, Texas (July 18) – Undefeated Irish star Carl “The Jackal” Frampton (21-0, 14 KOs) showed massive heart and determination, as he successfully defended his junior featherweight title against Alejandro Gonzalez Jr. (25-2-2, 15 KOs) at the Don Haskins Center in El Paso and live on PBC on CBS. Abraham defeats Stieglitz

YouTube video
What could be the end of their four-fight rivalry, World Boxing Organization (WBO) 175lb champion Arthur Abraham (43-4, 29 KOs) defeated his old frequently fought nemesis Robert Stieglitz (47-5-1, 27 KOs) in a 6th round knockout tonight in what many boxing fans hope will be the end of their constant rematches at the Gerry Weber Stadium in Halle, Germany.

Abraham hurt Stieglitz with an overhand right in the opening seconds of the 6th. Stieglitz continued to press forward despite being hurt. Abraham followed up with some clubbing shots that ended with him blasting Stieglitz with a right to the head that send him down. Stieglitz got to his feet but his corner waived the towel to referee Earl Brown to have the bout stopped.

Ik Yang Outclassed By Unknown / Cuenca Claims IBF 140 lb Title

Bob Arum had desperately wanted a Chinese world champion for his ever-expanding foray into the middle-Eastern market, and after amateur star Zou Shiming came up short against Amnat Ruenrong in his flyweight challenge in March, 140 lb prospect Ik Yang today followed suit and was comprehensively outclassed by 34 year old unknown Argentinian fighter Cesar Rene Cuenca, in his challenge for the vacant IBF light-welterweight title.

Cuenca, whose slate was 47-0 with only 2 knockouts – yes you did read that right – came in having never boxed outside his home country, and at 34 years old, wasn’t necessarily meant to present too tough a task for the fighter known as “The Wildman”.

Sadly for Yang, he more than lived up to his nickname, and was sloppy, slow and continually frustrated by the slick footwork, fast hands and accurate counter punching of Cuencas, who looked every inch the master boxer for the duration of the contest.

Donaire Destroys Settoul To Keep Scott Quigg Fight Alive

Now fighting back down at 122 lbs, the “Filipino Flash” Nonito Donaire today took less than 2 rounds to dispose of Frenchman Anthony Settoul in Macau, China, in a ruthless display of speed, accuracy and power, that floored the French fighter three times and sent a loud warning shot to Britain’s Scott Quigg : “Be careful what you wish for.”

Quigg goes into battle tonight against former IBF 122 lb champion Kiko Martinez in Manchester, and should he win that fight, promoter Eddie Hearn has lined up 4 weight world champion Donaire for the next defense of the Englishman’s WBA (reg) super bantamweight strap – however after today’s display it is more than clear that the 32 year old Filipino veteran isn’t done yet.
