Deontay Wilder to be ringside for Klitschko-Joshua fight: “I’ll be looking at who I want next”

When he fought his one and only fight on British shores – back in April of 2013, when he iced Audley Harrison inside a round, ending Harrison’s career – Deontay Wilder proved a real hit with the fans. Now a long-reigning WBC king, Wilder will again travel to the UK later this month; to both watch and commentate on the big Wladimir Klitschko-Anthony Joshua WBA/IBF heavyweight title fight showdown.

It’s no secret that “The Bronze Bomber” wants the winner; Wilder’s ultimate aim to become undisputed ruler over his weight class. But first he must wait and see how the 50/50 fight, set to play out before a monstrous 90,000 crowd, winds up.

The Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series teamed up with HBO Latino for another exciting night of boxing at the Uncas Ballroom at the Mohegan Sun Resort and Casino. The stacked undercard of international and local prospects was the perfect lead-in to the exciting televised event on HBO Latino.

In the first fight of the evening, Kazakhstan middleweight Meiirim “The Sultan” Nursultanov (2-0, 1 KO) stopped Javier Olvera (1-1, 1 KO) of Mexico in the second round. This was Nursultantov’s first appearance in the Mohegan Sun’s Rising Stars Boxing Series.

Results: Julius Indongo decisions Ricky Burns

Ricky Burns (41-6-1, 14 KOs) lost his WBA light welterweight title tonight to IBF champion Julius Indongo (22-1, 15 KOs) in a 12 round unanimous decision defeat at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow, Scotland. The fight was about as one-sided as you’ll ever see without it stopped. However, two of the scores by the judges seemed to be in fantasy land in giving Burns rounds that he clearly didn’t win. The scores were 120-108, 118-110 and 116-112. The score of those three that made sense was the 120-108 score.

Luis Ortiz suffers thumb injury, April 22 fight with Derric Rossy off

Unbeaten Cuban heavyweight Luis Ortiz has been forced to pull out of his scheduled April 22 fight with Derric Rossy due to suffering a thumb injury in sparring. Ortiz, 27-0(23) was to have boxed his debut under new promoter Al Haymon, his fight with Rossy an addition to the Shawn Porter-Andre Berto welterweight clash.

According to his team, the 38 year old southpaw was determined to fight on, but doctors advised him not to do so. But while this is bad news for Ortiz (he isn’t getting any younger and needs to stay as active as he can), spare a thought for Rossy. The Ortiz fight, one that looks unlikely to be rescheduled – Ortiz will reportedly now wait to fight the winner of the upcoming Anthony Joshua-Wladimir Klitschko fight – would have given Rossy a massive opportunity to gatecrash the heavyweight elite.

Results: Huerta defeats Delgado

Charles Huerta (19-5, 12 KOs) obtained the knock out victory in LA FIGHT CLUB’s sold out event going head to head with South Central’s Ivan “Striker” Delgado (11-1-1, 4 KOs) in the main event at the Belasco Theater that was televised live nationally on Estrella TV’s Boxeo Estelar. The action was hot, both fighters feeling the urgency to get the win. Delgado went down at the beginning of the third round after being on the receiving end of a powerful shot to the body, and attempted to carry on. Huerta came forward even stronger, and the referee ultimately stopped the match giving him the victory at the 3:36 mark of the third round.
