Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev: Legacy Sealer in Sin City

Andre Ward vs. Sergey Kovalev: Legacy Sealer in Sin City

Legacy is on the line this Saturday night when former super-middleweight king challenges light-heavyweight crown-holder Sergey Kovalev, live on HBO PPV. The winner of this super fight from sin city will cement their hall of fame credentials and likely take over the pound-for-pound throne. Several questions linger in what has been rightfully billed as a 50-50 fight between elite level fighters. Matching 30-0 records and top-5 P4P status makes this the best matchup on paper in 2016.

A strong case for victory can be made for either men, but it’s not as simple as a run of the mill boxer vs. puncher dual due to the well-rounded skills each pugilist poses. It’s safe to say that both fighters will be facing their best opposition to date. A few opponents come to mind to compare and contrast in an attempt to split hairs.

Andre Ward: We will see who is the puncher

Andre Ward: We will see who is the puncher

Most people understandably see tomorrow night’s big fight between Sergey Kovalev and Andre Ward as a classic Boxer Vs. Puncher showdown. Kovalev, the world light-heavyweight ruler, is the puncher, Ward, the former dominant super-middleweight king, the boxer. But is there a chance their roles could be swapped in Las Vegas?

Ward, as quoted by BBC Sport, suggests as much, stating how “we will see who is the puncher” in this fascinating match-up. Ward warned how Kovalev, should he make any mistakes in the early going of what has been called by many the biggest fight of 2016, will “be made to pay.”

Floyd Mayweather closes the door on a Pacquiao rematch, says he has no need to fight again

Floyd Mayweather closes the door on a Pacquiao rematch, says he has no need to fight again

It seems Manny Pacquiao’s recently donned jacket was and is a nifty fashion accessory and nothing more; even if Pac-Man knew this to be the case or not. Pacquiao’s jacket had, sewn into the lining, pictures of himself and Floyd Mayweather in fighting pose, and the Tweet Pac-Man wrote accompanying the picture asked “Like my jacket!”

Many people felt the jacket, the Tweet and the short message meant a rematch between the two superstars was on the cards, or at least Manny felt one was on the cards. Of course, it didn’t hurt that Mayweather was a ringside guest at Pacquiao’s November 5 fight with Jessie Vargas. But it seems none of this matters at all, because Manyweather, who calls all the shots, has insisted, again, that he has zero interest in fighting again – against anyone.

Froch-Golovkin Super-Fight! Could it still happen?

Froch-Golovkin Super-Fight! Could it still happen?

If the fight actually took place, how many fight fans would tune in, and pay to do so? It’s a guaranteed great fight that might actually have a small chance of getting made: Gennady Golovkin-Carl Froch! Wow, yes, wow. Yes, super-middleweight warrior and former champ Carl Froch is retired, but, as the saying, the adage, goes – they all come back.

And, according to GGG promoter Tom Loeffler, there is a possibility – just a small one – that “The Cobra” might be enticed to come back to fight the feared middleweight king. Speaking with IFL TV in Monaco at the Ortiz-Scott card, Loeffler said, with a smile (or maybe a mischievous grin) that he and Matchroom boss Eddie Hearn are working on a GGG-Froch match-up. This is a match-up that can only be described as a potential super-fight, one that millions of fans would cheerfully pay to see unfold it it was made a reality.

Joseph Parker’s promoter Dean Lonergan: Joseph blasts David Haye in two or three rounds

Joseph Parker's promoter Dean Lonergan: Joseph blasts David Haye in two or three rounds

Unbeaten New Zealander has not yet fought Andy Ruiz Jnr, but the Kiwi’s promoter Dean Lonergan is already looking at what might come after the December 10 bout that will contest the vacant WBO heavyweight title. Speaking with Sky Sports, Lonergan said that while he expects Ruiz Jnr, also undefeated, to give his fighter “a pretty tough fight,” he fully believes Parker will “blast through David Haye in two or three rounds.”

Why is Lonergan thinking and talking about Haye – because the former WBA heavyweight champ is in line to have first crack at the winner of the Parker-Ruiz Jnr fight. Haye recently saw how a WBO ruling called for the Parker-Ruiz winner to make their first defence against him within 120 days of winning the belt. Lonergan says that as far as he is concerned, the Parker-Ruiz winner will fight Haye next.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Jessie Vargas: A Bridge Built For Money May
