Teddy Atlas’ recent Top-10 Pound-for-Pound list didn’t include GGG; Atlas explains why

Love him or loathe him, there is no denying Teddy Atlas is about as passionate about the sport of boxing as any expert/pundit you could come up with. Atlas has a long history in the sport – training a young Mike Tyson way back in the early 1980s being one famous and well-documented highlight – and he has trained many other world champions.

Still, despite his passion, and a great deal of knowledge, picked up over the decades in which he has been involved in boxing, Atlas is not without his critics – far from it in fact. And just recently having filed his Top-10 Pound-for-Pound list for ESPN.com, Teddy drew the sting of many a fight fan. Why? Because his top-10 lacked one prominent fighter: feared middleweight king Gennady Golovkin; a fighter who is on EVERY SINGLE p-4-p list you can find today barring Teddy’s.

Vasyl Lomachenko-Jezreel Corrales a strong possibility for April says Arum

It seems there could be plenty of title fight unification match-ups taking place here in 2017. We’ve already had the James DeGale-Badou Jack super-middleweight thriller (which, okay, it didn’t produce the hoped for unified 168-pound champ, but the two warriors tried their best and that’s the point), and in March we will have welterweight stars Keith Thurman and Danny Garcia facing each other for two major belts.

Another hugely intriguing and exciting unification fight could happen in April, as Bob Arum, in speaking with TASS, said reigning WBO super-featherweight king Vasyl Lomachenko will likely face reigning WBA 130-pound boss Jezreel Corrales, on either the 8th or on the 15th of April.

No Salido-Lomachenko rematch any time soon; Arum says Salido “Chickened Out!”

It seems P-4-P star and reigning WBO super-featherweight champ Vasyl Lomachenko got overly hopeful, even jumped the gun, when he recently stated how his next fight would be a return meeting with Orlando Salido. According to Top Rank boss and Lomachenko promoter Bob Arum, Mexican warrior Salido “Chickened Out” of a rematch.

Speaking with RingTV.com, Arum said Salido – the only man to have beaten Lomachenko as a pro – asked for “crazy money.”

It’s one of the most intriguing rematches in boxing and it could happen in March. Vasyl Lomachenko, for many The Fighter of The Year, has been beaten by just two fighters in his entire career, amateur and pro – and the pro defeat, to tough Mexican Orlando Salido, remains the sole unavenged blemish on the super-featherweight champ’s C.V.

But, according to “Hi-Tech” himself, the rematch is very likely for March, in either Las Vegas or Los Angeles.

Terence Crawford would make 137 pounds for fight with Vasyl Lomachenko – for $10 million!

We don’t know how serious he was being, but Terence Crawford’s trainer Brian McIntyre told Ringtv.com yesterday that his fighter would work hard enough to make 137 pounds so as to fight Vasyl Lomachenko – if the staggering sum of $10 million gets put on the table. McIntyre, with a laugh, said Crawford, the reigning WBC and WBO super-lightweight champ, would drop down three pounds to fight the current WBO super-featherweight king.

“If they put $10 million to make 137 we’re going to make 137,” the trainer said. “We’re going to make 137. But I know it’s not going to happen. Terence would beat the (****) out of Lomachenko. He too damn small.”

HBO Embarrassed by Walters’ No Mas!

Poor HBO. Saturday night at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, Jim Lampley and Max Kellerman started the night off by spending many minutes trying to justify the controversial decision in the Andre SOG Ward over Sergey “Krusher” Kovalev fight. The explanation went this way. Max explained that after reviewing the tapes, he came up with the same score as the judges. They scored it 114-113 for Ward. Max said he had it in favor of Kovalev, but he quickly whitewashed his own opinion by saying, I understand why the judges voted for Ward! Hence, there really wasn’t an explanation, only an excuse. The fact is HBO’s hopes for a classic match-up ended up looking more like an MMA bout with Ward trying to garner points for a “take down”.

Walters told referee Tony Weeks he did not want to continue after the seventh round. The fight was televised live on HBO World Championship Boxing®.

Vasyl Lomachenko (7-1, 5 KOs) successfully defended his WBO junior lightweight championship belt when he dominated Nicholas Walters (26-1-1, 21 KOs) en route to a 7th round stoppage victory. Many boxing observers expected this to be a competitive contest between two elite boxers from this weight range. What transpired, however, was something completely different. Lomachenko made things look easy in there. Between the 7th and 8th rounds, Walters had informed referee Tony Weeks that he did not wish to continue. This ending left many fans disappointed, but the end result is that Lomachenko dominated and he looked sensational doing so.

Dominant Lomachenko wants unification fight with Francisco Vargas next

Vasyl Lomachenko is looking close to unbeatable right now; which may seem a strange statement as the reigning WBO 130 pound champion has lost a fight, and all that many fights ago at that. But the Lomachenko who lost a close decision to an over-the-weight and very crafty and tough Orlando Salido – in what was just Lomachenko’s second pro outing– was not on display last night in Las Vegas.

Lomachenko, expected by some to have some problems, maybe, with the power of Nicholas Walters, instead put on a dazzling boxing clinic that made “The Axe Man” say No Mas after seven rounds (this one day after the 36th anniversary of the most infamous quit job in boxing history, when Duran threw up his hands against Sugar Ray Leonard in their return bout). But there was no mystery over why Walters quit: he was getting schooled and he knew it. Lomachenko made a good fighter look very ordinary.
