Thanks, everybody for joining us today. We’re very excited to be talking about the fantastic undercard of the Canelo vs. Angulo pay-per-view event, which is taking place Saturday, March 8 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena and live on Showtime PPV®. Today joining us will be Leo Santa Cruz, Cristian Mijares, Omar Figueroa, Carlos Molina, Jermall Charlo and Eric Gomez, who will be running the call.
Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) is getting the 23-year-old Saul “Canelo” Alvarez (42-1-1, 30 KO’s) at exact the fight point in time to pull out an upset on March 8th when the two fighters go at it on Showtime pay-per-view at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Canelo was badly schooled in his last fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September in losing a 12 round decision, and Canelo looked like he didn’t have a clue in how to go about fighting Mayweather.
Canelo had talked for weeks leading up to the fight that he had the perfect game plan to beat Mayweather, and enough fans took the red-haired Canelo for his word to purchase the fight on PPV. But instead of having a game plan, Canelo tried to box Mayweather for most of the fight, and he ended up looking silly. By the time Canelo changed his tactics in the 9th round, he was too far behind to win and he ended up getting clowned.

The spotlight will be on light-middleweight star Canelo, however, who makes his first return to the ring since his loss to pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather last September.

Canelo was pretty well clowned by Mayweather until the 36-year-old fighter backed off in the last 4 rounds and took it easy on him. Canelo isn’t bothered that he looked so bad. He thinks he’s going to bounce back in his next fight against his hand-picked opponent Alfredo Angulo ((22-3, 18 KO’s) and resume where he was before his loss to Mayweather.
“Losing is part of boxing. Muhammad Ali lost and he’s still the greatest of all time,” Canelo said. “So a loss isn’t going to prevent me from being the future of boxing.”

For Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s first pay-per-view head-lining fight against Alfredo Angulo (22-3, 18 KO’s) on March 8th, Golden Boy Promotions is in the process of stacking the undercard with generally smaller fighters that the casual boxing fans will have a hard time recognizing. This is probably not the wisest move for Golden Boy and Canelo do because the Canelo vs. Angulo fight is hardly a PPV quality fight, and Golden Boy could be making things worse by stacking the undercard with generally smaller guys.
What this card needs is the Adrien Broner vs. Marcos Maidana II rematch and/or Canelo facing Erislandy Lara instead of Angulo, a fighter who was just knocked out. Golden Boy and Canelo need to re-think the idea of making this fight card a PPV bout because it’s doubtful that fans are going to want to pay to see a mismatch in the main event and then 2 mismatches in the undercard.
