Groves defeats Rebrasse, now WBC mandatory for Dirrell

YouTube video
Using a high volume attack, George Groves (20-2, 15 KOs) beat EBU super middleweight champion Christopher Rebrasse (22-3-3, 6 KOs) by a 12 round unanimous decision on Saturday night to put himself in as the WBC mandatory challenger at the Wembley Arena in London, UK.

Groves is now the mandatory to WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell. Groves constantly attacked Rebrasse throughout the fight, throwing punch after punch in hopes of scoring a knockout.

When the KO failed to happen, Groves had to slow down some to pace himself because he was burning out badly by the 8th round. It was lucky for him that Rebrasse had zero power for as tired as Groves was, he would have likely been knocked out.

Rebrasse looking to wreck Groves’ world title hopes

Rebrasse looking to wreck Groves’ world title hopes

Sometimes losing pays off for certain fighters. That was never more the case with George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs), who will be fighting in the WBC’s super middleweight title eliminator tonight against #3 WBC Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) at the Wembley Arena in London, UK. Groves is coming off of two knockout losses in a row to Carl Froch.

The WBC doesn’t care that Groves has lost his last two fights. They feel that he fought well enough to rank above the likes of Sakio Bika and a number of other quality fighters in the top 15 rankings.

If Groves beats the 28-year-old Rebrasse tonight then he’ll be facing WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell for his WBC title in either December or early 2015. Rebrasse will be looking to beat Groves tonight and wreck his plans for a world title shot.

Groves could be facing Anthony Dirrell for WBC 168lb title in 2015

Groves could be facing Anthony Dirrell for WBC 168lb title in 2015

If #4 WBC George Groves (19-2, 15 KOs) defeated #2 WBC Christopher Rebrasse (22-2-3, 6 KOs) in their WBC super middleweight title eliminator bout next month on September 20th at Wembley Arena in London, UK, we could very well see Groves challenging unbeaten WBC super middleweight champion Anthony Dirrell (27-0-1, 22 KOs) for the title sometime next year. Groves has to be seen as a heavy favorite to defeat the light hitting Rebrasse.

Dirrell’s power could be a problem for Groves because he hits so hard and he’s got excellent hand speed. Groves isn’t going to knockout a fighter like Dirrell. That’s probably not going to happen. But for Groves to beat Dirrell, he’s going to need to handle the huge shots that Dirrell hits him with for 12 continuous rounds.

Groves: I think Brook can beat Porter

Groves: I think Brook can beat Porter

Few people are giving Kell Brook (32-0, 22 KOs) much of a chance of beating undefeated IBF welterweight champion Shawn Porter (24-0-1, 15 KOs) in their fight on Saturday at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

George Groves, a fellow Brit, believes that Brook has it in him to pull off the upset and bring Porter’s IBF strap back to the UK. Groves sparred with Porter a decade ago when both fighters were teenagers and he sees him as essentially the same fighter now as he was back then.

George Groves says his third world title quest will end in success

Super-middleweight boxer George Groves says his third world title quest will end in success, as he prepares to take on European champion Christopher Rebrasse next month.

The 26-year-old faces the Frenchman, who is ranked third with the World Boxing Council, on September 20 at the SSE Arena in Wembley.

The winner takes the European title and the opportunity of a final eliminator for the WBC Super Middleweight belt, which is currently held by Sakio Bika.

Bika first fights in a title rematch against American Anthony Dirrell, but Groves said neither fighter would be able to halt his world title chase.

Groves’ Style Like a Toddler With a Loaded Diaper

Groves' Style Like a Toddler With a Loaded Diaper

The title seems to be a foul, a low blow, hitting a man when he’s down. But, it’s not intended to be. No one is questioning Groves’ heart or effort. Honestly, though, all you parents and grandparents out there must certainly understand the reference. You’ve seen your bow legged little scamp ambling around with a full load. The little cuties exhibit awkward movements, which makes them look a little discombobulated.

It is just an observation about a fighter’s peculiar style, one that would seemly tire a fighter. It requires a fighter to be in an awkward position. It’s an unnatural posture, accentuated by the oversized trunks. Couple that with legs wide spread, too wide for graceful movement. Then throw in a humped back, with shoulders hunched forward and you’ve got Groves. If he was any thinner, you could put a woman’s wig on him, and you’d swear he was a dowager.

Froch v Groves II – Postscript

Froch v Groves II - Postscript

Someone once described boxing as show business with blood. Joe Frazier’s take on it was perhaps more to the point. “Boxing is the only sport where you can get your brain shook, your money took, and your name in the undertaker book.”

How to place boxing as a sport in the second decade of the 21st century? Whenever we take a measure of ourselves and society today the word civilized automatically springs to mind – and yet, interrupting this smug belief in our own sophistication, up pops a sport like boxing to remind us of the uncomfortable truth that barbarism still has its place.
