Former super-middleweight world champion Carl Froch may well be one of the most perfectly placed to speak on IBF 168 lb champ, James DeGale’s next opponent, Lucien Bute, and claims today in his Sky Sports column that the Romanian simply isn’t the same fighter that he was before being “Cobra’d” by Froch in 2012.

Froch was fantastic that night in his hometown, entering at the time as a slight underdog and facing the cold reality that a defeat could really put the skids on his career at elite level, as he’d just come off being soundly beaten by Andre Ward in the final of the Super Six and was thus, belt-less.

Carl Froch: Playing Devil’s Advocate Over Klitschko Injury

Retired former super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has called into question the injury to Wladimir Klitschko that has caused the date for the Ukrainian’s title fight with British challenger Tyson Fury to be moved back.

Froch, writing in his Sky Sports column – and admittedly playing ‘devil’s advocate’ – is questioning the legitimacy of the calf-strain that Wladimir picked up just days after a fun-filled press conference in London that saw Fury arrive in a Batman costume, claiming the giant challenger may well have ‘rattled’ the champion.

Froch: “I never rated Groves”

A number of months ago, George Groves promised James DeGale that he would fight him if he managed to defeat Andre Derrell in a fight for the vacant IBF Super-Middleweight title, something DeGale went on to do on May 23rd.

If Groves himself manages to gain the WBC Super-Middleweight belt from Badou Jack when he fights him on Saturday, the showdown between the two brits is bound to take place. However, four time world champion Carl Froch, who famously beat George Groves twice, does not rate either of the fighters.

Nottingham’s Carl Froch finally brought the curtain down on his world title winning boxing career last week to take up his new role as full-time pundit for Sky Boxing, bringing about an end to the will he/won’t he fight again debate that had been rumbling since his 2nd victory over countryman George Groves last May.

After vacating his IBF title rather than face James DeGale, the Cobra was stripped of his WBA (reg) strap for inactivity as he made a decision about his next move and waited out an elbow injury – watching a mooted fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr in Las Vegas fall by the wayside when the Mexican was beaten into submission by Andrzej Fonfara earlier this year.

Andre Ward On Froch: ‘He Retired At The Right Time’

California’s WBA (super) 168 lb champion Andre Ward, who comprehensively outclassed Carl Froch in December 2011 as part of ‘The Super Six’ final, has spoken out to wish his old foe all the best in his retirement, telling Sky Sports that “The Cobra” has left the game at the right time.

The classy American, who demolished Britain’s Paul Smith last month, had some respectful words for his old rival – wishing him all the best for the future;

“You have to respect the way he went about it, and the fact he not only stepped up but beat just about all the guys he fought at the top level” said Ward.

Froch Under Fire / Fast Food Jibe For Rafael

If you happen to follow the twitter of ESPN writer Dan Rafael, then you may have seen the rather humorous exchange that took place yesterday regarding Carl Froch and his Golovkin assertions, that began when he posted a selfie on social media alongside the caption, ‘Too big & too strong for GGG’ – this in the same week that respected publication Boxing News ran a Q & A feature on Froch, carrying the headline quote; “I’ll likely retire.”

It’s pretty well known that when Golovkin’s manager Tom Loeffler seemingly went looking for Froch, he was met with a wall of silence after having opened initial talks with Carl’s promoter Eddie Hearn.

Golovkin thinks Mayweather and Froch are dodging him

WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (33-0, 30 KOs) is aiming high for his next fight in 2015. He wants Floyd Mayweather Jr., Carl Froch, Miguel Cotto or Saul “Canelo” Alvarez. Unfortunately, what Golovkin wants and what he’ll get our two different things. Golovkin believes that Froch and Mayweather are ducking a fight against him by making excuses for why they can’t get inside the ring to face him.

Mayweather said he can’t fight Golovkin because he’s near the end of his career. That probably means it’s too dangerous of a fight for him right now. Froch says that Golovkin wants a catch-weight in order for him to fight him. Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler refutes that notion, saying that they have never asked for a catch-weight for a fight against Froch. They’ll fight him at 168. So who do you believe?

If the news comes as any surprise, then you have either been living under a rock – OR you bought into the ‘Golovkin at Wembley’ hype from the man himself – but in the surest sign yet we have seen the fighting last of Nottingham’s Cobra, promoter Eddie Hearn has gone on record to say it’s “likely Carl Froch will retire.”

We thought that might happen in fairness. At least, those of us with one foot in reality did anyway. With Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler admitting talks with the Froch team have ground down to nothing and stalled – they are now looking toward a battle of the puncher’s at 160 with new IBF champion David Lemieux.
