New IBF champ Joshua: Foreman, Ali, Frazier fought; Me, Fury and Haye have to fight

Newly crowned IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua insists he will not get carried away with winning his first world title and that bigger and better fights are very much still to come. Joshua crushed the big talking non-delivering “Prince” Charles Martin inside two stunningly easy rounds last night and in light of A.J’s easy win, the jury is still out on how good, or great, the 26-year-old can become.

Tonight in London, before a sold-out crowd at the O2 Arena, Anthony Joshua proved to be way too strong and powerful for defending IBF heavyweight champ Charles Martin. After a relatively cagey opener, Joshua opened up in the 2nd, twice dropping his southpaw opponent with right hands. The fight was all over after the second knockdown, as Martin was counted out in the act of rising. The official time was 1:52 of round-2. Joshua, the 2012 Olympic gold medallist, is now 16-0(16). Jay Deas, trainer of WBC heavyweight king Deontay Wilder gives his take on tonight’s Martin Vs. Joshua fight

Jay Deas, trainer of WBC heavyweight king Deontay Wilder gives his take on tonight’s Martin Vs. Joshua fight

Everyone has an opinion on tonight’s intriguing Charles Martin-Anthony Joshua fight. A genuine 50-50 affair in the opinion of many – including A.J’s promoter Eddie Hearn – the IBF title fight will set the winner up for some huge fights. One of these potential blockbusters awaiting tonight’s winner is a unification clash with unbeaten KO King Deontay Wilder, the reigning WBC champion.

Wilder, of course, has to take care of the formidable Alexander Povetkin in Russia first, but as long as he takes care of business, Wilder would be willing to defend his belt, and look to pick up another title, against either Martin or Joshua.

The Heavyweight Division and Much – Needed (hopefully) Clarity

The Heavyweight Division and Much - Needed (hopefully) Clarity

When Tyson Fury upset long – reigning champion, Wladimir Klitschko last November to win the lineal heavyweight championship, it immediately injected new life into a division in need of life. Okay, so it wasn’t exactly George Foreman taking Joe Frazier’s lunch money or Larry Holmes and Ken Norton beating each other up with the rusted links of the evolutionary chain.

It was more like the first microbes that crawled from the primordial ooze of the earth’s beginnings. Nothing exciting, I’d assume but it was a start and that always leads to somewhere, even if it takes the craziest route, which is exactly what happened.

Eddie Hearn: Don’t rule out Fury against A.J in the summer

The boxing world (usually) moves fast, and though hugely hyped British heavyweight star Anthony Joshua has yet to defeat reigning and defending IBF champion Charles Martin in what is being looked at as his first real test as a pro, his promoter Eddie Hearn is already being asked questions about who Joshua will fight next.

Due to one fight and any progress with regards to its official announcement being very much on the slow side – the Tyson Fury-Wladimir Klitschko return – Hearn has told Sky Sports how Fury might take another fight instead – one against Joshua. Hearn, like the rest of us, is wondering what is going on with Fury-Klitschko II, and he suggests the fight might fall though. If this is the case, Hearn said today, “don’t rule out Fury against A.J in the summer.”

Anthony Joshua- Many thanks for you guys taking the time to join the call. Eddie mentioned some great figures and great achievements that we have accomplished from the time I turned professional, and also the fact that the excitement of the heavyweight division is back and it’s an honor to be involved in it, especially here in the UK. And sometimes in heavyweight boxing the UK’s been overlooked, but I think right now people are looking at us and starting to respect the division a lot more.
