Commey sparring with Joshua Clottey ahead of Commonwealth eliminator

Commey spars with Clottey World title hopeful, Richard Commey is in high spirits and predicting nothing but victory in his scheduled July 13 fight in the UK against Paul Truscott in a final eliminator for the Commonwealth Lightweight title.

Hitherto UK based Commey has been training in Ghana with his coach, Carl Lokko and has sparred with some of this country’s best boxers including former IBF Welterweight champion, Joshua Clottey and Obodai Sai, a former Commonwealth Lightweight champion.

Now he says he is ready to emulate his illustrious compatriots by going for the ultimate beginning with the date against Truscott at the York Hall, Bethnal Green in London, the very venue of two previous victories in his 15-0, 15 KOs resume.

Kotey Neequaye beats Sanchez to improve to 20-0

Ghanaian world championship hopeful, Samuel Kotey Neequaye improved his burgeoning career record to 20 wins in as many fights and an impressive 15 knockouts to boot after adding Guillermo Sanchez to his list of conquests on Friday night.

In perhaps the toughest fight of his career thus far, 29 year old Neequaye edged the strong challenge of Sanchez in their Lightweight clash at Turning Stone Resort & Casino, Verona, New York via a unanimous points’ decision victory.

Refereed by Paul Brown, Judge Tom Schreck scored it 76-75, Don Trella also scored it 76-75 whilst judge number three, Don Ackerman had his scorecard 77-74, all in favour of the hard hitting Samuel Kotey Neequaye despite suffering a knockdown in the second round.

“He stepped on my feet because he is a southpaw and threw a straight right which I thought the ref will not count. But rather I took the count and it made me more aggressive when I woke up. You know it comes with the territory where the strong survives,” Neequaye explained to the Ghana based website www.sportsinghana.com from his US base.

The hard-hitting Lawson has written the headlines with his spectacular dismissal of opponents in all of his 20 professional fights thus far, not least last March 22’s 3rd round technical knockout stoppage of compatriot Isaac Sowah to claim the IBF Africa Welterweight belt. In all, Lawson has claimed 19 knockouts in his 20 career fights.

Filipino boxer, Ronald Pontillas has arrived in the Ghana capital ahead of Friday night’s boxing cracker at the Accra Sports Stadium vowing to stop local favourite, Emmanuel Tagoe in their clash for the WBA International and WBO Africa Junior Lightweight titles in the headliner of BabyJet Promotions’ second ever bill.

And the 23 year old Pontillas who will face an opponent from Africa for the first time ever, has been buoyed by the huge patronage he has received on arrival from the Filipino community in Ghana who were at the Kotoko International Airport to welcome him and have pledged to be at the national stadium in their numbers to cheer the boxer unto victory.
