Robert Garcia Maps Vergil Ortiz’s Middleweight Takeover

Robert Garcia has stopped planning around the junior middleweight champions. Rather than leave Vergil Ortiz Jr. waiting for Jaron Ennis and Sebastian Fundora to finish collecting belts, Garcia wants him fighting at 160 pounds and building a position there before they arrive.

Garcia said that Ennis’ likely schedule makes another year of waiting pointless. EverythingBoxing shared his comments.

“After [Jaron Ennis] fights Kelly, then he already has 3 belts and more likely he’s going to say, ‘Let’s go for undisputed.’ So that leaves us waiting. What are we waiting for? Fundora is also going to say, ‘I’ll go for undisputed.’ So that’s summer of next year. We have to wait a year to get a fight? Nah, we’re moving on. 160 is where I think we’ll get good fights. Eventually, [Boots and Fundora] will come to 160, and we can still get those fights,” said Robert to ProBox TV.

The idea makes sense from a scheduling standpoint. Ennis can take Josh Kelly’s IBF belt and then pursue WBC champion Fundora for undisputed. Vergil would spend another year hoping the winner chose him afterward, with no guarantee that the fight would ever happen.

A move to middleweight allows Vergil to remain active and potentially gain ground before Ennis or Fundora reaches the division. Garcia’s plan, however, assumes his fighter will receive the necessary opportunities and win them.

IBF champion Aaron McKenna and WBO champion Denzel Bentley look like Vergil’s most manageable title opponents, but their belts are already tied up in a planned autumn unification bout. That leaves him dependent on the winner’s availability, with promotional politics presenting another obstacle.

McKenna is signed with Zuffa, while Carlos Adames has fought under the PBC banner. Neither side has an obvious reason to cooperate with Golden Boy if the arrangement does not benefit its own fighter. The freedom Garcia describes at 160 may come with another collection of promotional barriers.

The greater concern is what happens inside the ring against Adames or Yoenli Hernandez. Both men can punch, absorb punishment, and remain dangerous during sustained exchanges.

Yoenli would be particularly hazardous. Vergil relies on pressure and sustained offense, so avoiding heavy return fire for twelve rounds would be nearly impossible. He would have to walk through the punches of a full-sized middleweight to impose his preferred fight.

Will Vergil’s Chin Hold Up?

His last two competitive bouts at 154 do not make that proposition comfortable. Serhii Bohachuk dropped Vergil twice in August 2024 before losing a majority decision, and Bohachuk had a strong case for winning.

Six months later, Vergil faced Israil Madrimov. Madrimov entered after an illness, yet controlled much of the early action and repeatedly caught him with counter right hands. Two of the three judges scored the bout only 115-113, with the third turning in a wide 117-111 card.

Vergil accepts punishment to land his own combinations. That trade becomes more dangerous against larger opponents. If Bohachuk dropped him twice, Yoenli may put him down two or three times while forcing him to expend even more energy recovering and fighting his way back.

There is one potential benefit. Vergil has endured serious health trouble during previous weight cuts, including rhabdomyolysis. Competing at 160 may leave him stronger and better conditioned over twelve rounds. It also removes some of the size advantage he held in the lower divisions. At middleweight, he will be pressuring men accustomed to absorbing punches from larger fighters.

The financial reward may not match the danger. The current middleweight champions command respect from dedicated boxing followers, but they are not mainstream attractions. Vergil may find himself facing bigger punchers such as Yoenli for modest commercial returns before Ennis and Fundora arrive.

Garcia sees 160 as open territory where Vergil can remain active and start collecting important wins. He may be right about McKenna or Bentley. Against Adames or Yoenli, the planned takeover can become a survival test very quickly.
