What On Earth Next For Victor Ortiz!?

YouTube video
By James Slater – Well, Victor Ortiz did it again last night at The Staples Centre in L.A: he quit in a fight he was winning. Okay, far be it from me, or anyone else, to call a fighter a quitter or a coward for pulling out of a bout with as painful an injury as a broken jaw,(the injury Ortiz is suspected to have suffered last night against huge underdog Josesito Lopez) but the future sure looks bleak for “Vicious” Victor right now.

In light of the former WBC welterweight champ’s previous behaviour (quitting against Marcos Maidana, deliberately butting Floyd Mayweather), its going to be tough for many fans to ever trust or believe in the southpaw again. We’ll never know whether or not Ortiz, spitting blood, could have carried on for the last three rounds last night, but in past history, the great ones have battled through such an injury (think Ali against Norton for a famous example). Ortiz, even if he can come again, will never be called a great..

Smiling after losing the fight – as well as saying bye bye to a massive payday of a fight with Canelo Alvarez – Ortiz, as was the case after throwing it all away vs. Maidana and Mayweather, simply didn’t appear to care. And that’s the problem: if Ortiz doesn’t care, why would/should the money-paying fans?

Anyway, enough about last night’s loser; winner Lopez deserves a ton of credit. As tough and as game as they come, the Riverside warrior made the absolute most of the opportunity that came his way due to Andre Berto failing a drugs test. Lopez can enjoy his victory and, after his own facial injuries have healed, he can look forward to bigger fights and maybe also bigger paydays.

Meanwhile, the search begins anew for Canelo’s September 15th dance partner.
