Mayweather-Cotto: A rejuvenated Cotto faces Mayweather on Saturday

Miguel CottoBy Ziggy Shah: Ever since the May 5th WBA Super World light middle weight clash between Floyd Mayweather and Miguel Cotto was announced, I have been counting down the days like a prisoner waiting for his release date. There are many other fantastic match-ups in the boxing calender this month, but this one has definitely vitalized my my boxing senses.

Admittedly, like many other fight fans, my initial reaction fight was, “What about Manny?” It is a question that has been on the lips of many die-hards across the globe, who are desperate to crown either boxer, champion of this era. But, I guess as long as politics and money are a part of the hurt game, the dream match-up seems unlikely. Anyway, more on that, if and when it happens.

For now, it’s Mayweather v Cotto! The build up to the fight has been fantastic, no trash talking, no silly little scuffles, just the utmost respect being shown throughout by both gladiators. And as the blood, sweat and tears induced by months of training begin to stop dripping, pundits have begun pushing their pencils and analysing what they believe will happen at the MGM Grand, Las Vegas.

A majority of whom will surely favour the Five Weight World Champion, Floyd Mayweather, who boosts a 42-0 record.

Miguel Cotto, it seems is being overlooked on this occasion, with most experts believing that the only advantage he has is the ‘weight factor’. (The fight being made at 154lbs, Floyd’s last fight was at Welterweight).

But the Puerto Rico legend seems to be reborn and rejuvenated after his revenge victory over Antonio Margarito. The controversial first meeting had a profound effect on Cotto, and left the Three Weight Champion in tatters. But revenge was sweet for the four time world champ, as he fought like the Cotto of old. He put together accurate, hurtful combinations and made a solid statement to the world, that ‘Cotto Is Back’. Also, his newly formed relationship with trainer Pedro Diaz, who has introduced the theory and methodology of training into Cotto’s workouts, has been an asset for him.

It has indeed made him a more technical fighter. Add to this his never die, never surrender mentality, which is usually followed up by a deadly left hook, and what you get is a fighter who really has a chance.

Personally, I am a big Mayweather fan, and find it hard to criticize his weak points in the ring. Quite simply because he does not have any. Whether you love him, or hate him, he is an Elite fighter who is also an all time great. But, there’s something about Cotto, something that is different. There’s a belief in his eye’s that says he can do this. And who knows, on May 5th, will we see a victorious Puerto Rican, or will the Pretty Boy once again remind us that, ‘The Easy Money’s On Mayweather’.
