By James Slater: British promoter Mick Hennessey truly believes he has a future world heavyweight ruler in his unbeaten contender Tyson Fury. Big plans are underway for the 23-year-old, 6’9” giant and Fury is well aware of the pressure on him to perform. Some experts suggest the 18-0(13) contender should forget all about facing the elite of the elite (I.E: the Klitschkos) for at least 18 months, but Hennessey says his man will not only be challenging the two brothers by next spring, but that he will be defeating them.
In a recent interview with Express.co.uk, the promoter said he feels his fighter will be fighting one of the two siblings by March or April of next year.
“We are eyeing the Klitschkos already,” Hennessey stated. “But the best way forward right now is for Tyson to continue to build up his name on terrestrial television and become a mandatory challenger for one of the Klitschkos. That way we can try to get one of them to come over to Britain and fight him.
“I think he’ll fight one of the Klitschkos by March or April next year.”
Needless to say, it would be a massive event for British boxing if either Wladimir or Vitali agreed to fight Fury (or anybody else for that matter) on these shores. Fury, though, needs a big win before becoming the mandatory challenger to either brother. Set to fight again on June 30th, Fury, the Express article writes, may face European champ Robert Helenius or “regular” WBA champ Alexander Povetkin before the end of 2012.
A win there would possibly put Fury well and truly on the radar of one or both of the two “Doctors.” Fury may never become good enough to be able to defeat either Klitschko, but it sure will be fun watching big Tyson fight. Willing to face the best (although his critics point to Fury’s relinquishing of his British title instead of facing U.K rival David Price and suggest he and his team are not quite as confident as is made out), Fury has an attractive blend of old-school attitude mixed with an exciting, sometimes vulnerable fighting style. Simply put: it’s entertaining when Fury gets in the ring.
Look for Fury to face a decent, none too dangerous TBA on June 30th, before stepping it up and getting in there with a Helenius or a Povetkin at the end of the year. If he can get past that test, Fury will be on course to roll the dice against a Klitschko.
