Mayweather on Conan O’Brien, talks Pacquiao and Ortiz

By Vitali Shaposhnikov: Just a few days before his showdown with Victor Ortiz (29-2-2), Floyd Mayweather Jr. (41-0-0) visits Conan O’Brien as a guest, for a little comedy and play. As always, both O’Brien and Mayweather Jr. touch on different comedic topics, and as expected, Manny Pacquiao is also mentioned at the end of the visit.

Conan: “Are you worried about your opponent Victor Ortiz?”

Floyd: “No, I never worry!”

Of course this is something we all expect to hear from most fighters when asked about their upcoming bouts. Is Mayweather Jr. truly not worried about Ortiz? Probably not, since there is nothing new in this young champion that Floyd hasn’t seen before.

At some point during the show, Conan decides to throw a curveball at Floyd, testing to see if Floyd’s sense of humor will come through:

Conan: “Ortiz is a Harry Potter fan…”

Floyd: “My children are huge Harry Potter fans, they got something in common!”

I don’t know about you, but I thought that was pretty funny. Despite the fact that there was obvious hinting at the fact that Ortiz is such a young fighter when compared to Floyd, Conan stayed clear of anything too offensive, although he did ask Mayweather Jr. why Victor said that Floyd had a nice mouth.

As I was watching the video, I kept my eye on the time remaining until the episode ends, wondering if Manny Pacquiao was going to be a part of their conversation. Indeed, right before the end, Conan went for it:

Conan: “I have to ask you, it’s my job: do you think you will ever fight Manny Pacquiao, do you think that it’s going to happen?”

Floyd: “Hopefully. If you’re the best, you got to take the test. I represent the red, white, and blue… He is from another country. All I ask is just take the test.”

Conan: “So if he does that, you would fight him?”

Floyd: “Absolutely”

After many controversial and self contradicting statements about Manny Pacquiao and their potential bout, Floyd is back to a yes. We have heard Floyd ask for the test numerous times, but we have yet to hear Manny say that he is willing to take it. Don’t get me wrong, personally, I am fairly confident that Manny is not, and likely has never used any doping for his fights. Still, I wonder why Mayweather Jr. makes his requests public on every occasion he gets, while Manny has not yet spoken up about this in a clear and direct fashion. Just this alone makes you wonder what Manny has got boiling in his mind.

As far as Floyd and Conan go, they both do real well together. It was a short yet interesting episode, and I think that Conan did a great job in entertaining the viewers without going into the fight to much. After all, there is nothing new to ask, and no new answers to be expected.
