LOS ANGELES, June 14 – The talking is over, the hard training is done and now it’s time to fight. This Saturday, June 18, at Arena Vicente Fernandez in Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, World Boxing Council (WBC) Super Welterweight World Champion Canelo Alvarez will make his first title defense and put his amazing 36-0-1 record on the line against veteran contender Ryan Rhodes, who is determined to make sure that his first world title shot in nearly 12 years won’t go to waste.
Alvarez returned to his hometown on Friday night to finish training after a six week camp in Big Bear, Calif., while Rhodes has been in Guadalajara for over a week to make sure he is 100% ready for Saturday’s fight.
The explosive co-featured bout pits two of the top young super featherweights in the world against each other as unbeaten Adrien “The Problem” Broner battles Jason Litzau for the USNBC title in a ten round fight. Highly touted prospect Adrien Broner, who puts his undefeated record (20-0, 16 KO’s) on the line, faces a tough test in Litzau (28-2, 21 KO’s) who has only two loses with one coming at the hands of WBA & WBO Interim Lightweight World Champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero.
Also in action will be Golden Boy’s Mexico City standout Marco Antonio Periban (13-0, 10 KO’s), a super middleweight prospect who will look to make an impression on his home-country fans. He steps back through the ropes in search of his fourth win of 2011 when he faces Los Mochis Sinaloa’s Alfredo Lugo (11-10-1, 5 KO’s) in an eight round non-televised fight.
Alvarez vs. Rhodes, a 12-round World Championship bout is presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Canelo Promotions in association with Hatton Promotions and sponsored by Corona, DeWalt Tools and AT&T. Broner vs. Litzau is presented by Golden Boy Promotions in association with R&R Promotions, Roy Jones Jr.’s Square Ring Promotions and DiBella Entertainment. Saturday, July 16, “Comanche Boy” George Tahdooahnippah returns home to battle for the World Boxing Council (WBC) Continental Americas middleweight title in an outdoor boxing event at the Comanche Nation Casino in Lawton, OK.
Tahdooahnippah, (27-0-1 20 KO’s) will face Jimmy “The Fightin’ Schoolteacher” Holmes (19-2-2, 10 KO’s) of Demotte, Indiana. “I need this belt,” Tahdooahnippah said. “I won’t be denied. WBO GIVE BOXING CLINICS TO CHILDREN FROM CUPEY ALTO WITH CONTENDER JONATHAN OQUENDO AND CENTRAL AMERICAN AND CARIBBEAN GOLD MEDALISTS
SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO- World Boxing Organization (WBO) and its program “Kids Drug Free” gave today boxing clinics to the kid of the Summer Camp of the community of Cupey Alto as part of the succesful program Kids Drug Free.
The activity got the #2 WBO superbantamweight contender Jonathan “Polvo” Oquendo and 2010 Central American and Caribbean Games Gold Medalists Angel Acosta and Enrique Collazo, giving their boxing skills and words to the children at the Complejo Deportivo de Cupey Alto.
Oquendo (21-2, 14 KOs), who is also the WBO NABO and Latino champion in 122 pounds, was together with his trainer Dennis Pantoja and the Puerto Rico Amateur Boxing Federation president Jose Luis Vellon bringing their knowledge to the kids. Amateur National Team boxers as Jean Anthony Ortiz, Carlos Ortis, Antonio Ortiz, Felix Verdejo and Jose Soto participated in the clinics.
There worked in the clinics referee Jose H. Rivera, Judge Hernando Steidel and trainer Juan “golo” Gomez and Florencio Gonzalez.
