Hrgovic suggests nationality is limiting his chances at bigger fights
Filip Hrgovic indicated that his path to major opportunities may be affected by where he is from, suggesting he does not expect to be given the same chances as British heavyweights.
Hrgovic, who faces Dave Allen next, was asked about the possibility of securing a future title fight or a rematch in a bigger setting. While he said such scenarios would be ideal, he quickly dismissed the likelihood. “That will be great,” he said to iFL TV. “But I don’t think so that’s happening.”
Pressed on why, Hrgovic gave a short and direct answer. “Because I’m not from Great Britain.”
The comment reflects a frustration that has followed parts of his career, particularly as several UK-based heavyweights continue to secure high-profile fights and title opportunities. Hrgovic did not expand further, but the implication was clear as he pointed to nationality rather than results or form.
While it is true that being British or American helps with marketing, Hrgovic’s recent track record makes his complaint feel a bit like a reach. His loss to Daniel Dubois wasn’t a “nationality” issue. Dubois systematically broke him down until the fight was stopped. When you lose the biggest opportunity of your career by TKO, blaming your passport for not getting a title shot immediately after feels a bit off.
Hrgovic barely getting past David Adeleye, who isn’t exactly at the top of the food chain, didn’t do much to convince the public that Hrgicic is an “avoided” monster.
For a long time, Hrgovic was the guy nobody wanted to fight. But once he stepped up into those elite-level bouts, the aura faded. If you aren’t bringing the belts or the massive ticket sales, you have to bring undeniable performances, and he hasn’t done that lately.
“Stay ready, keep winning, and my chance will come,” Hrgovic said, as if giving himself an inner pep talk.
His immediate attention is on Allen, a popular British fighter who will have home support behind him. Hrgovic dismissed any impact that the environment might have once the fight begins. “We are the only two of us in the ring, so fans cannot help him,” he said.
Taking a fight against Dave Allen is a classic move to rebuild, but it’s a double-edged sword. If Hrgovic doesn’t absolutely dominate “The White Rhino,” the “chip on his shoulder” is only going to look more like an excuse for a decline in form.
