Andre Dirrell’s Scouting Outing

Waldon “TBD” White – Before the start of the Andre Ward vs. Allan Green WBA Championship fight I had time to have a round of discussion with Andre Dirrell. Andre Dirrell 19-1(13KOs) is 1-1 in the Showtime Super Six World Classic tournament with his most recent win a result of a disqualification over Arthur Abraham March 27th. Dirrell was ahead by the scores of 98-91 and 97-92 twice before the 11th round stoppage due to Arthur Abraham hitting Dirrell after he slipped to one knee. Before the stoppage occurred Dirrell was in command landing a fourth round knockdown in a fight many observers thought he had no real chance of winning. Andre was in town to perform a scouting report of sorts as he wanted to get a good look at who and what he may be facing in the next round of the tournament. I wanted to get down to business and find out what was on the Flint Michigan native’s mind and heart..

TBD: Andre… can you tell me between Allan Green and WBA Champion Andre Ward who would you rather fight in the next round of the tournament?

AD: Well no matter who wins I’m going to have to do what I’ve gotta do to come out with a victory in the next round but I would have to say Ward.

TBD: With you preferring a fight with Ward, what do you bring to the table to that could potentially derail Ward’s seemingly unstoppable run?

AD: The world has never seen a superb boxer with the intangibles that I bring to the ring. I believe my hand speed is much quicker than Ward’s and I can effectively nullify his boxing game.

TBD: I don’t think that Andre Ward’s boxing skills can be underestimated as he shows a unique ability to adapt to the opponent he stands in front of. How would you fight Ward and is your team already formulating a plan for him?

AD: Well I think Andre Ward is a great boxer and I think a bout between the two of us would be a war…a war of attrition. I am strong with both hands and switch hands faster than anyone in the business. I am constantly confusing opponents by giving them different looks and would stick to boxing my way to victory against Ward. I switch hands so often and so quickly that I generally have to watch tape to see exactly how many times I do it during a fight. I think that style will enable me to keep Ward on his toes and not allow him to become comfortable at anytime. I currently believe that I’m the best in the business when it comes to my style, speed and boxing ability and I also believe I will come out on top at the end of this Super Six tournament.

Andre Dirrell appears to believe that he has the boxing ability and craftiness to come out on top of the pile in the Super Six World Classic tournament. Both Andre Dirrell and Andre Ward are Olympians with Ward coming away with a Gold medal and Dirrell coming away with a Bronze medal. This coupled with their celebrated amateur records and current run of success makes for an intriguing match up to determine who will continue on to the championship. Later that night after WBA champion Andre Ward thoroughly thrashed Allan Green I wanted to catch up to Dirrell to find out his thoughts. I believe that after watching Ward’s destruction of Green that Dirrell may be looking for another angle to beat the WBA champion who seems to continually adapt to whomever he is facing. After catching up to Dirrell he seemed to maintain his composure and stick to his earlier comments about how he would deal with a Ward bout. Stay tuned as I go in again with Dirrell later this week to see what really was on his mind after the fight.
