By Eugene Carnachan: New Zealand heavyweight Shane Cameron (24 -2) is looking to drop around 37 pounds to fight at Cruiserweight. Something I suggested he do prior to his fight with fellow New Zealand heavyweight David Tua; a first round knock out loss.
Cameron at six feet tall and weighing 237 pounds is to small and not heavy handed enough in an era of heavies mostly dominated by Eastern European behemoths..
Tua with similar dimensions survives in the heavies because he has packs tranquilizers in each hand and is widely regarded as the biggest puncher in the division. Add a chin like an anvil to that equation.
Cameron interestingly is looking to campaign for a fight with the current IBO Cruiser champion Danny Green (27-3). This match on the face value would appear as Green in a cakewalk.
Danny Green has a far more illustrious pedigree on paper. Having fought at the Olympics and too being a three time world champion Green packs a pretty impressive mantle piece.
However that’s the face value and there are a few factors that could make this an exciting contest. Green only weighed in at 180 pounds for his April fight with Puerto Rican Manny Siaca (22-6). Cameron would most likely hit the scales at the Cruiser limit of 200 pounds. Giving him a massive weight advantage given Green in naturally the smaller man and struggles to get over 180 pounds.
The stronger man in this contest would most likely be Cameron and with a 77% knock out ratio in the heavy ranks he packs fairly good power however if he can drop weight and retain the power he would be a very dangerous power punching proposition at Cruiser. It’s well known Cameron comes to a contest to compete off the front foot. Same applies with Green. Both men are widely regarded as aggressive fighters.
This fight if it could be brought to fruition has the potential to be a good one…a very, very good one.
