by James Slater – Currently one of the most talked about fighters in the world, reigning WBC super-middleweight champion Carl Froch has a number of attractive options when it comes to who he should fight either next or in the near future. In taking a huge gamble by going across to Connecticut to defend against former middleweight king Jermain Taylor, “The Cobra” proved he is willing to take a risk so as to fight the best..
Speaking today on The Setanta Sports Boxing Hour, the unbeaten 31-year-old made it clear he wishes to have further fights that are of a risky, or as he put it, a “spicy” nature. Froch has had rival 168 pound champ, Mikkel Kessler of Denmark, in his sights for a while now, even since before he defeated Jean Pascal to win his world belt. And now, if he gets his way, Froch says he will fight the current WBA ruler in his next fight – and he says he would be more that willing to travel to Denmark to take the fight.
“I’d fight Mikkel Kessler in my next fight. To add a bit of spice to it I’d travel to Denmark to do it, I really would,” Froch said. “I took the risk [against Taylor] and it paid off. I’m in pole position now. T.V broadcasters are queuing up for me and rightly so.”
It’s undeniable that Froch is in a good spot right now, after doing what he did to “Bad Intentions” in that amazing final round last Saturday. And surely when he next fights there will be no repeat of the U.K T.V networks passing up the chance to show his bout live. Froch is that exciting he is must-see entertainment, he really is. And a battle with the superb Dane would be an truly un-missable affair.
It is this type of fight that gets Froch “up” and ready to rumble. Indeed, though he would be entitled to have a relatively safe opponent come over to his native Nottingham for his second title defence, Froch says such a fight would not provide him with the necessary motivation.
“It would be nice to have a simple fight in Nottingham, to earn a few quid and give the fans something back,” Froch said. “But I can’t get up for those fights. I like to put myself under pressure – like my friend David Haye. He puts himself on the line but he goes out there and does the business.”
So, will Kessler take the challenge? Or will Froch wind up going after someone else? The name Bernard Hopkins is beginning to crop up when it comes to who will fight Froch next, and maybe “The Cobra” will clash with “The Executioner.” Either way, and for as long as he’s fighting, the WBC super-middleweight champ is sure to give us value for money.
