(COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO.) – Five U.S. boxers stepped through the ropes at the Gymnasium Lopez Mateos Arena in Guadalajara, Mexico on Sunday with three claiming victories to advance in the 2008 AIBA Youth World Championships. Flyweight Adam Lopez (San Antonio, Texas) notched his second victory of the tournament, winning a 12-11 decision over France’s Oualid Belaouara to advance to quarterfinal action where he will face the Dominican Republic’s Orlando Felix Perez Zapata on Wednesday..
Welterweight Errol Spence (Desoto, Texas) won his opening bout of the tournament, recording an 11-4 win over Colombia’s Alex Theran in first round action. Spence’s victory earns him a spot in the second round with the Ukraine’s Makarov Taras. The two will battle for a berth in the quarterfinal round on Tuesday.
Middleweight Luis Arias (Milwaukee, Wis.) closed the day in impressive fashion for his United States team. Arias gave Hungary’s Tamas Gumdi four standing eight counts before the bout was stopped at the :53 mark of the second round. The victory moves Arias on to second round action where he will face Puerto Rico’s Felix Rodriguez on Tuesday.
Light flyweight Oscar Cantu (Kingsville, Texas) dropped his opening bout to home country boxer Saul Tuarez of Mexico by an 11-3 margin while lightweight Traon Bynum (Fort Washington, Md.) suffered a 16-8 loss to Cuba’s Juan Garcia.
Five U.S. boxers will compete in preliminary round competition on Monday in Guadalajara with bantamweight Joshua Berrelleza (Riverside, Calif.) facing Ecuador’s Jonathan Valarezo in his first bout of the tournament and light welterweight Roscoe Hill IV (Spring, Texas) taking the ring for the second time to battle Mexico’s Alfonso Felipe Ugalde. Both bouts will be contested in afternoon action at 2 p.m. CST. Berrelleza will compete in the fifth bout of the afternoon session with Hill boxing in the 14th bout of 2 p.m. competition.
Three boxers will compete in evening competition, beginning with featherweight Kevin Rivers (Fort Washington, Md.) taking on Belarus’ Vitali Varabyeu in the second bout for both boxers. Heavyweight Nicholas Kisner (Glen Burnie, Md.) will face the Czech Republic’s Martin Krelina and super heavyweight Joey Dawejko will battle the Virgin Island’s Clayton Laurent. Both Ksiner and Dawejko will be competing for the first time in Guadalajara and evening competition will begin at 7 p.m. CST. Rivers will compete in the fourth bout of evening action with Kisner and Dawejko boxing in the 10th and 12th contests respectively.
