Unbeaten Prospect Ali Chebah Blows Away Antonio Carlos De Jesus To Retain WBC Youth Title

by James Slater — Tonight, in Galicia, Spain, unbeaten 22-year-old light-welterweight prospect Ali Chebah of France improved to 27-0(21) with an all too easy 2nd round blow-out of Brazil’s 25-year-old Antonio Carlos de Jesus. A good right, left, right combination to the head accounted for de Jesus, for even though the Brazilian beat the count he was deemed unfit to go on by referee Francisco Vasquez.. The fight was a quite terrible mismatch, and Chebah won without even breaking a sweat.

The man from Brazil, who looked noticeably smaller than the WBC youth champion, gave it a go in the opening round. Landing a few flurries with his fast hands, de Jesus, who has no power to speak of as his new record of 13-6(3) shows, won the round. But it was more a case of the Frenchman choosing to do virtually nothing. Indeed, according to the Euro Sport T.V commentator, Chebah has a habit of messing around in there at times when he fights. Against the skinny and thoroughly overmatched fighter he was in with tonight it didn’t matter – there was no way de Jesus was going to win even with the unbeaten 22-year-old failing to give the bout his full attention.

Sure enough, almost as soon as he opened up in the second round Chebah got his man out of there. A fast right hand, left hook, right hand combo upstairs sent the Brazilian reeling and the fight was all but done with. The 25-year-old beat the count, but appeared disorientated upon doing so and the third man in the ring had no choice but to end the contest.

A talented amateur, of whom good things are expected as a pro, it is unclear what tonight’s fight taught Chebah – if anything at all. In reality, the two boxers looked as though they belonged in different weight classes. A poor job of matchmaking done in Spain, it’s just a good thing de Jesus was not badly hurt. What Chebah needs now is to step up in class and face someone his own size. So far in his career the man from France has had things all his own way, and he has met his share of fighters with losing records – looking at his stats, there is not one recognisable name there.

It’s still early days, of course, but any more mismatches like tonight’s and Chebah will run the risk of not being anywhere near ready once he does move up in class.
