13.06.07 – Amir Khan says he is planning to beat Willie Limond at his own game – by building up his strength with daily portions of Scottish specialty porridge. Khan has been knocking back bowlfuls of the health food as he prepares himself for his July 14 clash with Scotsman Limond at the O2 Arena, London, for the Commonwealth lightweight title..
He says he has already seen a difference, even if there is a drawback – undefeated Amir can’t stand the stuff.
“I’m no Goldilocks – porridge isn’t my favorite meal,” said 20-year-old Khan, who recently spent a week in Tenerife on a training camp.
“But it’s so full of nutrition that I have to grin and bear it.
“Scottish warriors like William Wallace and Robert the Bruce got strong on porridge, and I know it will be the same for me.
“Already I feel like I’m punching harder than ever in the gym. My trainer Oliver Harrison took me on the pads the other week and he said my shots were more powerful than ever before.
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt in better shape, and I’m really looking forward to knocking out Limond on July 14.”
Yet however much porridge is helping him improve, Khan says he will draw the line at that other Scottish favorite – haggis.
“One of the old timers at the gym told me that haggis also makes you strong, but it’s not for me,” added Amir. “I think I’ll just stick to my mum’s curries instead!”
Khan-Limond is part of an action-packed show at the O2 Arena, with Nicky Cook challenging Steven Luevano for the WBO featherweight title.
Kevin Mitchell, Anthony Small, Bradley Pryce and Matthew Marsh are all involved in title fights, while Commonwealth Games gold medallist Jamie Cox makes his professional debut.
