Mora fighting for IBA World title in Colorado

LAS VEGAS (April 28, 2007) – Denver’s prodigal son Stevie “Lil’ But Bad” Johnson isn’t the only Colorado native returning home to fight May 18 for an IBA world title on the “Rocky Mountain Mayhem: Return of the Champ” card, promoted by Silverhawk Championship Boxing, at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colorado..

While it’s been 6 1/2 years since Johnston (40-4-1, 18 KOs), who will defend his IBA World lightweight title belt in the 12-round main event, since he last fought in Colorado, NBA light NBA light welterweight champion Adrian “Juanito” Mora (18-0-1, 10 KOs), of Thornton (CO), hasn’t fought in Colorado since January 31, 2006.

Mora fights former NABO title challenger Marc Thompson (15-1, 12 KOs) in the 12-round co-feature for the vacant IBA light welterweight championship. Mora’s most notable victory to date is a 10-round decision against former NABF lightweight champion Steve “The Mongoose” Quinonez (30-7-1), which marked Adrian’s first 10-round fight in only his 12th pro bout, on July 1, 2004.

“I feel real good about fighting again at home,” Mora said. “My last three fights have been out of state and my fans have been asking when I’d be fighting back home again. Before signing with Silverhawk, I had promotional and managerial problems that led to fights falling through for me. I turned pro in 2000 and I feel like I’m satisfied but a little behind in my career. I’m not looking pat this fight, but I expect to have a fight against a big name by the end of this year.

“I’m a boxer-puncher who isn’t a one-punch knockout guy, but I have equal power in both hands and love throwing combinations. I can fight at light welterweight or lightweight. I’ve fought as high as 147. This is a business and I’ve fought from 135 to 147, but I think my natural fighting weight is 135. In my last fight, at 140, I only weighed 137 and I could have easily gotten down to 135 without any problems. My hometown, Thornton, is only about 15-20 minutes from Broomfield and I expect to have a lot of fans there on May 18.”

Also scheduled to fight on the “Rocky Mountain Mayhem: Return of the Champ” card is heavyweight power puncher Cedric “The Bos” Boswell (23-1, 18 KOs), as well as welterweight knockout artist Alexis Camacho (14-0, 13 KOs), lightweight prospect Jaime “Superfly” Sandoval (14-1, 12 KOs) and Adrian Mora’s brother, junior welterweight Anthony “The Matrix” Mora (15-1, 10 KOs). All fighters and bouts subject to change.
