Casamayor’s Future Not Clear Yet; De Cubas’ DRL Loaded With Young Talent Available for NYC Viewing on January, 11

03.01.06 – By Ricardo Lois, BoxingConfidential.com — Los Angeles — As Boxing Confidential checks in with boxing’s major players and their plans for 2007, Luis De Cubas, a central figure in DRL Promotions (along with Dan Wise and Roberto Duran), could not be left behind.

Promoter of the Lightweight Champion of the World Joel Casamayor, De Cubas’ is not quite sure who the crafty Cuban southpaw will face off with in 2007, but does have makes on the most attractive possibilities..

“David Diaz, Acelino Freitas, and Erik Morales are all possibilities. We would like Freitas or Morales,” said De Cubas, “Casamayor beat the best fighter in the world, in [Diego] Corrales, we would give Diaz the opportunity, but he is just that, an ( W.B.C.) intern champion.”

Casamayor won the WBC Lightweight Championship when he defeated Corrales in their rubber match last year, but has mandatory intern champion Diaz blocking him from other bouts.

Jose Sulaiman, WBC President, commented today from Mexico City, “Diaz is Casamayor’s mandatory and if the Cuban wants an exception, he must file and it will go to the Executive Council for review.”

As for De Cuba’s, the preferred situation would be a Freitas/Morales, back to back combo for the veteran Casamayor.

While Casamayor’s career obviously winds down, DRL is loading their deck with a boat load of new talent, including one of the best prospects in boxing, Julio “Baby Face” Garcia, according to De Cubas.

“We got “Baby Face” Garcia, he is 19 years old with 35 knockouts. To me he is the best Mexican fighter to come along since Chavez.”

That is saying a lot Luis, I am assuming he meant Julio Cesar Chavez and if that is the case, Marco Antontio Barrera and Erik Morales might have something to say about that statement. Garcia, has forty victories at his green age, I imagine him and Chavez do have one thing in common at this point in time, they have beaten their fair share of Mexican cabbies.

DRL will present their brand of boxing January 11th in New York City at the Roseland Ballroom. The card will be headlined by Mexican legend Luis Ramon “Yori Boy” Campos vs. Eduardo Sanchez.

Aside from the aging Campos, NYC fight fans can see the world premiere of DRL’s latest signings, Carlos and Juan Velazquez (twins from the Puerto Rican Olympic Team), and middleweight sensation (or possible latest NYC hype job) Peter “Kid Chocolate” Quillin.
