Interview with Lamon Brewster

31.03.06 – by Ike Enwereuzor: WBO heavyweight champion Lamon “Relentless” Brewster (33-2, 29 Ko’s) will be making his fourth title defense against dangerous and once beaten Sergei “White Wolf” Liakhovich (21-1, 14 Ko’s) on Saturday April 1, 2006, at the Wolstein Center, Cleveland, Ohio, which will be televised on Showtime Network. Here’s what the WBO heavyweight champion had to say about is upcoming fight with Liakhovich:

Ike: How is training coming along for your fight with Liakhovich on Saturday April 1st?

Brewster: Everything is going great. Training is going real good and I’m feeling great. I have been down here in Florida training with Buddy McGirt. I’m on a mission and I got nothing else to say but it’s not going to be an easy fight.

Ike: How long have you been preparing for this fight?

Brewster: I have been training since January but seriously for 5 weeks.

Ike: What’s your impression of Liakhovich?

Brewster: I think he’s a good fighter but I haven’t really seen him fight. I don’t know what to say, I guess he’s a good fighter to be facing me. I think I saw his fight against Friday Ahunanya, but I never thought much of Friday, who seemed to just trying to knock him out.

Ike: Your thoughts on the Rahman-Toney fight?

Brewster: You know what, that wasn’t the same James Toney I know; If he came in shape, he would have won that fight. The Toney I know didn’t show up but I thought Hasim Rahman won the fight.

Ike: Your thought of Rahman as a fighter?

Brewster: I think Hasim Rahman is a great fighter but we need to fight each other. I would love to fight Rahman, soon. We have been talking about unification for a long time now. Let’s make it happen soon. I want to get back in the ring as quick as possible, after I take care of Lyakhovich. I’m hoping to fight other champions this year.

Ike: Your impression of WBA heavyweight champion Nicolay Valuev?

Brewster: He fought a good fight with Ruiz used his height and jab well. We all know John Ruiz is not a bum; he was impressive and I give him all the praises. I hope one of these days these guys will step up and face WBO heavyweight champion Lamon “the Relentless” Brewster.

Ike: Your prediction for Byrd-Klitschko coming up?

Brewster: I don’t really have any prediction, but I think Chris will show the world his improvement. He knows what he’s against, so he’ll show up different this time. Wladimir is a terrific athlete, but I don’t think he can improve much, and I don’t think he’s on top of his game. I’m sure if Chris has done his homework and use his mind well, he can win this fight.

Ike: Your pick for Tarver-Hopkins?

Brewster: I don’t know, Man. I do know it’s going to be an interesting fight to watch. I’m focusing more on my fight but styles makes fight; this is a fight Tarver can pull off.

Ike: Judah-Mayweather?

Brewster: The one that wants it the most is the one that will win.

Ike: How was your trip to Germany in your last title defense?

Brewster: Germany was a great experience; the people there were so nice to me. I was a great experience fighting somebody in their own backyard. I had a lot of fun in Germany. The people were cool to me and it was really nice.
