Club show boxing in NJ: the “Main Events” way!

26.10.05 – By Mike Indri, Retired Boxers Foundation: While establishing themselves as one of the biggest and most respected forces within the business of big-time boxing, the New Jersey based promotional company Main Events has never lost sight of the foundation which has led to it’s ultimate prominence..

Paying their dues since inception over twenty-five years ago, via the club show circuit, the Bloomfield, NJ company garnered it’s reputation and credibility, as well as it’s world class stable of fighters, thru such venues as an ice rink in Totowa and the smaller casinos in Atlantic City.

Hence the aptly titled “Back to the Future” moniker for the proposed Main Events boxing series which will get underway Nov. 30th at the boxing friendly Schuetzen Park in North Bergen; the same North Bergen which was the home of former world heavyweight champion James Braddock.

During Thursday’s on-site press conference an excited Carl Moretti, Main Events vice president of boxing operations, said “we’ve been wanting to do these local shows for a long time now. A new series in our own backyard, where there are many good fighters.”

Realizing there’s work ahead Moretti acknowledged, “we may lose some money, but we are building something in a good boxing area.”

The Nov. 30th fight card will feature young, local talent. Slated for action are Bayonne light heavyweight Bobby Rooney (5-1, 3 KO’s), Jersey City lightweight Danny McDermott (3-0, 1 KO), unbeaten Lyndhurst super middleweight Wayne “Lights Out” Johnson (9-0, 5 KO’s), undefeated Paterson welterweight Henry Crawford (7-0-1, 2 KO’s) as well as promising female bantamweight Noriko Kariya (3-0) originally from Canada, now fighting out of Jersey City.

The exciting, undefeated featherweight Jason Litzau (15-0, 14 KO’s) will be featured in the night’s main event bout. Coming off the canvas on more than one occasion to knock out his opponent, the twenty-two year old Minnesota native has captured the boxing public’s eye with his dramatic knockouts and action packed, no holds barred fighting style. The likeable
Litzau, nicknamed “The American Boy”, promises nothing less for this upcoming fight.

“I had to go thru some wars to get here, but now I’m fighting a main event for Main Events. It’s going to be a great fight and a great show, I promise.”

North Bergen is no stranger to classic, club show fights which brought sell-out crowds time and time again to the no-longer-standing Embassy Hall theatre during the 70’s; which featured such NJ boxing legends as Chuck Wepner, “Irish” Pat Murphy, Mustafa Hamsho and Randy Neumann.

In such a densely populated area starving for good quality fights, there is no reason such a formidable boxing promotional company like Main Events would not be able to bring to northern New Jersey what it has been lacking for so long: good talent and good shows on a consistent basis.
