Wladimir Klitschko’s Post Fight Comments

26.09.05 – By Scoop Malinowski / Boxinginsider.com: Newly-appointed WBO and IBF mandatory heavyweight challenger made these statements at the post-fight press conference following his victory over the Nigerian Nightmare Samuel Peter:

Wladimir Klitschko: “It was not the best performance but I tried my best. Of course Samuel Peter has a really strong chin, his head is like a coconut…Unfortunately those knockdowns on my side were from tactic – some blows behind the head. However I determined to fight and continue the fight. And give my best. I hope you enjoyed the fight. Thank you very much for attention. If you have any questions…

About why he did not try harder to finish the wobbly Peter after landing a crushing short left hook in the 12th round: “I hurt him. You know you have to find the best position and don’t give any chance to your opponent because right now – my goal – that is to become a champion again. It was very important to win this fight, to become number one in IBF and WBO. It is my goal and now I’m in the position to fight for the championship.”

On Peter’s style: “His style is pretty wild, very wild. I will say that I think Samuel Peter is like the beginning, he’s very powerful strong man. But I think he has less idea about taking hits (inaudible). So he’s strong physically that’s what I have to admit. He has an awkward style. I wasn’t prepared for those blows in the short distance behind the head.”

On Next Opponent: “We’ll see what’s available next. I think Brewster is a great opportunity. Hopefully he gonna win (vs. Krasniqui).”

On his stamina and ability to go 12 rounds: “I think it was an easy fight for me to go 12 rounds. There were some doubts about my stamina. Now you can see that those problems I don’t have, so if I want again I can go 12 rounds. I have the goal in my life to become a sports champion. And I have to get everything done what I have to. So maybe outside it was all the time question about stamina but inside I never lost confidence. So I have to just keep going and keep going forward.”

On clinching Peter: “Strategy. Because I think Samuel Peter I think his condition not the best. And he became also pretty tired. As more he was clinching, I was clinching him as well. As more he was throwing his hands in the air and started and slowed his muscles worse. It was then easier for me to fight in the later rounds.”

On being hurt on the knockdowns: “Samuel Peter was unorthodox. Of course I was really surprised when I got hurt. I knew where it was coming from. It was a short distance behind the head.”
