11.12.04 – Ron DiMichele @ ringside: New Haven, Ct Middleweight Bad Chad Dawson took a big step forward in his young boxing career Friday night with an eighth round stoppage of former WBA World Jr. Middleweight Champion Carl Daniels at Foxwoods Resort and Casino in Mashantucket, Ct, while United States Olympian, Heavyweight Jason Estrada made a successful entry into the pro ranks.
The battle of middleweight southpaws Dawson and Daniels started slowly with a cautious, feeling out first round. In the second Chad Dawsons game plan shifted into gear as he worked his long right jab from the outside and connected with solid hooks from both sides to Daniels ribcage. Carl Daniels, 160, of St. Louis, Mo sought to use shifty head movement and quick flurries to ward off Dawsons attack, but it wasnt enough..
Dawsons long range sharpshooting and withering body blows steadily broke the veteran Daniels down and a left hook finally put him to the canvas in the sixth. Daniels arose quickly but simply didnt have enough to keep the rangy Dawson at bay. Chad Dawson was on top of Daniels thoughout the sixth and seventh battering him against the ropes with hard combos to the head and body. On the ringside doctors advice, Referee Steve Smoger called a halt to the contest between the seventh and eighth rounds of the scheduled ten round contest.
Im heading for the top, said Dawson after the fight. Im ready for the top ten. After viewing his
performance against the veteran Carl Daniels, its hard to disagree.
Chad Dawsons goes to 16 and 0 with 11 KOs, while Carl Daniels sees his record drop to 49-5-1 with 31 KOs.
Jason Estrada Wins
Heavyweight Jason Estrada, 248, of Providence, RI delivered a Gold Medal beating to Joseph Kenneth, 243, of Miami, Fl to win a lopsided four round decision victory in his professional debut. Former Olympian Estrada used quick and accurate punching to overwhelm and outclass a willing, but overmatched opponent. Two consecutive hard right hands to the head dropped
Kenneth (3-4, 2 KOs) in the second as Estrada simply piled on the hurt for the duration of the bout.
I think I did a great job, said Estrada after the contest. The guy was game. I hit [him] with some
vicious shots and he stayed in there.
Clampitt and Olsen Battle to Draw
In womens title action, Jamie The Hurricane Clampitt, 140, of Narragansett, RI faced Eliza Olsen, 140, of Fresno, California in a ten round bout for the International Womens Boxing Federations Jr. Welterweight belt recently stripped from Englands Jane Couch. This fight was a rematch of a bout in which Jamie Clampitt (14-3-1, 5 KOs) won a close decision over Olsen (8-4-3, 2 KOs). Olsen flew off the stool at the opening bell firing salvos of punches with both hands to drive Clampitt back to the ropes. Olsen maintained an aggressive attack throughout the fight charging Clampitt in two style and repeatedly jacking up Clampitts head with hard uppercuts on the inside. Clampitt showed a good jab at times and landed some strong one-two combos in the later rounds, but Olsens relentless punching kept Jamie on her heels for most of the fight. The bout ended in a disappointing draw.
The judges scoring was as follows: Glenn Feldman: 96-94, Olsen; Joe Dwyer: 96-94, Clampitt; Steve Weisfeld: 95-95
In a six-round Light-Heavyweight contest Joe Spina, 170 , of Providence, RI used a stunning left hook to knock out James Johnson, 171, of Shrevesport, La at :13 of the second round. Spinas record climbs to a perfect 14 and O with 11 KOs. Johnson falls to 17-13-2 with 11 KOs.
