19.05.04 – A possible world title shot will be at stake Saturday night, June 12 when one of pro boxing’s most exciting performers, IBU and NABF super middleweight Scott “The Sandman” Pemberton (27-3-1, 22 KOs), headlines “Enter The Sandman,” airing live at 8 – 10 PM/ET on CN8, The Comcast Network from Foxwoods Resort Casino in Mashantucket, Connecticut.
Jimmy Burchfield’s Classic Entertainment & Sports, Inc (CES), in association with CN8 and Foxwoods Resort Casino, promotes “Night of Champions,” which is the second of a five fight CES-promoted series, Instant Classics. “Enter The Sandman” will be shown live in primetime on CN8, to homes in New England and North Jersey. It also will re-air network wide to 6.2 million homes on Saturday, June 19 at 2:30 PM/ET. Boxing fans nationwide can also view “Enter The Sandman” via CN8’s web site at www.CN8.TV.
Pemberton, rated No. 8 by the WBC and No. 15 by the IBF, was recently selected by The Ring magazine as the “Most Fun to Watch” super middleweight in the world and his exciting win last year against Omar Sheika was selected as 2003 Fight of the Year by the “Bible of Boxing,” as well as by ESPN2. Scott’s thrilling 10th round TKO of Sheika this past January, also at Foxwoods, rates as an early candidate for 2004 Fight of the Year.
Pemberton, fighting out of New Bedford (MA), has won 15 of his last 17 fights with one draw. He’ll defend his IBU and NABF belts in the 12-round main event against former world title challenger James Crawford (38-7-2, 15 KOs), of Iowa.
“With (WBA & IBF champ) Sven Ottke retired and (WBO champ Joe) Calzaghe moving up to light heavyweight,” CES founder and president Jimmy Burchfield explained the significance of this fight for Pemberton, “the super middleweight division is wide open. Some of the fighters rated higher than Scott in the WBC will be fighting for other titles and they’ll be dropped from the WBC ratings. Scott will move up to a better position for a WBC title shot against Markus Beyer, as long as he beats Crawford, who has been in with Ottke, Dana Rosenblatt, (Jeff) Lacy, (Rudy) Markussen and other top super middleweights. Scott isn’t training for a tune up because there’s a lot on the line for him and Crawford is going to be a very stiff test.”
IWBF and NABAW light welterweight champion Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt (13-2, 5 KOs), of Narragansett (RI), will defend both of her world titles in a 10-round special women’s feature against three-time former world champion Jane “Fleetwood Assassin” Couch (23-6, 8 KOs), of England.
Scheduled to fight on the undercard, in separate bouts, are unbeaten light heavyweights Joey “KO Kid” Spina (11-0, 9 KOs), of Providence, and Wayne “Lights Out” Johnsen (4-0, 3 KOs), of Peabody (MA), as well as Providence cruiserweight Matt Godfrey (1-0), the 2004 Everlast US National champion.
