04.12.03 – – With 22 wins and no losses in his three-year career, “Mighty” Mike Anchondo has pounded his way into the rankings at 130 pounds, leaving a trail of destruction in his wake. On Thursday, December 11, at the legendary Grand Olympic Auditorium in Los Angeles, Anchondo will step up to prove whether he truly belongs among the junior lightweight elite when he battles tough veteran Gregorio “Goyo” Vargas in the 2003 finale of HBO Latino’s “Oscar De La Hoya Presents Boxeo De Oro”.
Anchondo-Vargas, the main event of a six-bout card presented by Golden Boy Promotions and Miller Lite will begin at 6:00pm. Doors open at 5:30pm. The HBO Latino telecast, which will also feature a ten round lightweight bout between unbeaten Urbano Antillon and Adan Hernandez, will air at 10pm ET / PT.
With the type of good looks and heavy hands that have drawn comparisons to his promoter, Oscar De La Hoya, Anchondo (22-0, 18 KOs) has caused quite a stir in the fight community. Currently ranked fourth in the world by the WBO, and ninth by the WBA, the 21-year-old “Mighty Mike” has his eyes set on a title shot in 2004, but first he has to take care of business on December 11.
Gregorio “Goyo” Vargas is no stranger to boxing fans around the world. 44-7-1 with 30 KOs, the native of Santa Maria Nativida has thrilled worldwide audiences with his take no prisoners style and warrior’s heart. A longtime Mexican featherweight champion, Vargas has battled the likes of Floyd Mayweather Jr., John John Molina, and Kevin Kelley in his 15-year career. In his last bout, on October 31, Vargas derailed the title aspirations of hard-hitting prospect Gary Balletto, dropping him in round three en route to a 12 round decision.
In the “Boxeo De Oro” co-feature, Maywood lightweight Urbano Antillon (11-0, 7 KOs) returns to the HBO Latino airwaves against Adan Hernandez. Fans of the series will remember the 21-year-old Antillon for his stirring decision win over Ivan Valle in June, a fight that featured enough plot twists to fill a Hollywood blockbuster. But in the end, it was Antillon emerging victorious by scores of 96-92, 96-91, and 97-90. In his last bout, on September 13, Antillon stopped Martin Bermudez in six rounds.
24-year-old Texan Adan Hernandez has only lost once in 14 bouts (via a close eight round decision), and is currently on a two-fight win streak.
Another unbeaten prospect, featherweight Jorge Solis (21-0-2, 16 KOs), will also be featured on December 11 in a ten rounder against hard-hitting Cristobal Cruz (25-5-1, 15 KOs). Hailing from Guadalajara, Solis has held the Mexican super bantamweight and featherweight crowns, and is currently the WBA Fedecentro featherweight champion, having won that title in his last bout on November 7, a unanimous decision victory over Wilson Alcorro.
And if one unbeaten Solis isn’t enough, eleventh ranked WBC junior flyweight contender Ulises Solis will also be in action, taking on Alejandro Moreno (20-12-1, 10 KOs) in a bout scheduled for eight rounds.
Female featherweight sensation Rhonda Luna (4-0, 1 KO) will put her duties as a high school English teacher to the side December 11, when she battles unbeaten Amber Gideon (1-0) in a four rounder.
