Roy Jones Jr. will fight in Liverpool in the autumn

The American boxing icon, who is a former four-weight world champion won an Olympic silver medal and was voted Fighter of the Decade in the 1990s, will face an opponent to be named at the prestigious Aintree Equestrian Centre.

The only boxer in 106 years to win the middleweight and heavyweight world titles during a career spanning more than two decades, Jones is set to clash with a local name for the vacant World Boxing Federation Inter-Continental cruiserweight title on September 12.

Bob Arum Casts Doubt On Brook v Rios / Eddie Hearn Believes It A Go

It has been assumed now for some time that Brandon Rios will be traveling to the UK in September to challenge IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook on the same date Floyd Mayweather fights his 49th and ‘final’ fight – the 12th.

However in a chat with assembled media at the Bradley/Vargas presser, Arum has now spoken out to insinuate the fight perhaps isn’t as near to done as we think.

Earlier this week Rios’ trainer Robert Garcia told fighthype that as far as both he and Brandon were concerned, Rios’ manager Cameron Dunkin had done a solid job negotiating terms and that both fighter and trainer were happy with what was on the table.

If the news comes as any surprise, then you have either been living under a rock – OR you bought into the ‘Golovkin at Wembley’ hype from the man himself – but in the surest sign yet we have seen the fighting last of Nottingham’s Cobra, promoter Eddie Hearn has gone on record to say it’s “likely Carl Froch will retire.”

We thought that might happen in fairness. At least, those of us with one foot in reality did anyway. With Golovkin’s promoter Tom Loeffler admitting talks with the Froch team have ground down to nothing and stalled – they are now looking toward a battle of the puncher’s at 160 with new IBF champion David Lemieux.

Though Floyd Mayweather’s detractors will belay the significance of his victory over pugilistic warrior Arturo Gatti as another over-hyped mismatch, pundits of the sweet science at the time will remember just how significant this matchup was at that time 10 years ago today .

Still promoted by Top Rank at the time, “Pretty Boy” Floyd Mayweather Jr. stood atop the pound for pound debate alongside long reigning middleweight champion Bernard Hopkins (who would lose his first bout in 12 years only three weeks later). The belt they would fight for was the WBC Super lightweight title, though few would have considered Gatti the champion of the 140 lb weight class. That distinction belonged to Ricky “Hitman” Hatton who had wrested the title from Kostya Tszyu (who had unified the WBC, WBA, and IBF belts in 2001) a mere three weeks prior. However, that did not detract from the attention that this bout garnered.
