Being a true Golovkin fan means demanding more
Most pro fight fans pay little attention to amateur boxing. Every four years they may watch the Olympics and perhaps find a favorite whom they will follow on his journey into the pro ranks. It was in the 04 Olympics some of you may have spotted a Kazakh silver medalist by the name of Gennady Gennadyevich Golovkin, soon to be known in pro boxing circles as GGG.
Having been involved in the amateur scene from the late 90’s I first came across Golovkin in 2001 in Osaka Japan when he defeated Daniel Geale in the welterweight final of the Asian Games. I was instantly a fan, following him through the 03 world championships in Bangkok to the 04 Olympics in Athens.

Showing once again his star power, middleweight sensation Gennady Golovkin, with his easy, quick and decisive win over an over-matched but game Dominic Wade, drew in well over a million fight fans on HBO this past Saturday; 1.388 (at peak) to be exact. This is the news from ESPN.com and naturally, all at Team-GGG are thrilled. Golovkin, even when matched with a whopping great underdog everyone knows has next to no chance of derailing the Kazakhstan terror, attracts the fans.

IBF/WBC middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin (35-0, 32 KOs) did what everyone expected him to do in destroying an over-matched Dominic Wade (18-2, 12 KOs) in two rounds after putting him down three times on Saturday night at the Forum in Inglewood, California. The referee Jack Reiss stopped the fight after Wade was slow in getting up after the second knockdown in the 2nd round.

Not many in the sport of boxing think unbeaten Dominic Wade has any real shot at victory versus Gennady Golovkin this Saturday. But that doesn’t stop the 15,000+ fans from attending this mismatch on HBO, at The Forum in Los Angeles. At this point Gennady could fight Roberto Duran and fans would still pay to watch this man perform. OK maybe not.
No hate coming out of this article, fact is power punchers tend to attract the biggest fanbase whether or not the fighter has proven their worth. And for the most part, besides Andre Ward, Golovkin’s team has done their due diligent to scour the earth in search of a suitable opponent at the top-heavy 160 pound division.

As fans have most probably read, new IBF heavyweight champ Anthony Joshua’s first title defence has been officially announced for expected venue The O2 in London, on June 25th (two weeks before world heavyweight champ Tyson Fury meets Wladimir Klitschko in their big rematch). Another big sell-out is anticipated, even though fans who are buying tickets do not yet know who the 16-0(16) Joshua’s challenger will be.

The fight is dubbed “Repeat or Revenge,” and next week in the city of Manchester in the UK, heavyweight rivals Tyson Fury and Wladimir Klitschko will come face to face for the first time since their November fight, at the official press conference to announce the date and the venue of the anticipated return.
Press conferences can be dull affairs, merely a matter of formality. However, in light of the crazy, and highly amusing antics Fury got up to in a previous press conference with Klitschko – where he, amongst other things, dressed up as Batman, rolled around on the floor in a mock fight, knocked the then-champ’s belts on the floor and hurled plenty of verbal abuse at an often bemused-looking Klitschko – people are asking themselves what will happen when Fury meets Klitschko next Wednesday in Manchester?
Gennady Golovkin: Canelo, The idol of Mexico? The idol for what?
Feared middleweight Gennady Golovkin isn’t really much of a trash-talker. No, the lethal talent with the choirboy looks, who refers to his opposition, those opponents he has respect for, as “good boys,” is more at home with a smile and a good word, not a snarl and an insult. So, it is perhaps due to his growing frustration at not being able – so far – to nail down a fight with Mexican star Canelo Alvarez, that GGG has come out and questioned Alvarez’ idol status in his homeland.

Tyson Fury/Anthony Joshua won’t be fighting on the same night, Joshua sees sense and looks at other dates for first title defence
In the words of one boxing pundit, it would have been “promotional suicide” for rival British heavyweight stars to have fought on the same night. Yet for a time, it looked as though the world heavyweight king and the newly crowned IBF heavyweight champ would indeed go head-to-head on rival shows on July 9th. But today, in speaking with BBC Sport, Joshua said it is “most unlikely” he will now box on July 9th.
