So who was 2017’s Fighter of The Year?
It’s that time again and fans are voting, not just on the website of ‘The Bible of Boxing,’ Ring Magazine, but it seems this particular poll is the yearly one most fans get into (and of course, you don’t argue with the Bible!)
Just 6-0, with all six wins coming by KO inside a couple of rounds, towering London heavyweight Daniel Dubois is right now THE young heavyweight prospect to watch – in 2018 and beyond. Having caused some buzz already, the 6’5,” 20 year old has some huge, huge expectations on his broad shoulders.
Saul Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin both were slow in adapting during their previous fight on September 16. Canelo was stuck moving along the ropes, failing to take the fight to Golovkin in center ring.
Deontay Wilder needs to realize he’s not the A-side for the Anthony Joshua fight, according to Floyd Mayweather. The A-side guy is Joshua in this heavyweight unification fight, says Mayweather. Joshua is the one that’s bringing in the big viewing numbers and the high pay-per-view results over England.
Former heavyweight champion Tyson Fury says he’s leaving it up to Anthony Joshua and his promoter Eddie Hearn to agree to his contract demands for a fight in 2018 otherwise there won’t be a fight. Fury (25-0, 18 KOs) says Joshua and Hearn have been trying to dictate terms for the fight with him, and he’s not going to allow them to do that.
Gennady ‘GGG’ Golovkin will NEVER outbox WBO middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, says the British fighter. Saunders states that Golovkin isn’t 28 anymore; he’s 35, and he will not be able to beat him in a boxing match.
There are already a few fights we can look forward to in 2018, these bouts being either officially announced or heavily suggested: Errol Spence-Lamont Peterson, Keith Thurman-Jessie Vargas, Jeff Horn-Terence Crawford and Deontay Wilder-Luis Ortiz (suggested for the spring but not yet official).
Back in September, in Chihuahua, Mexico, former world champion Antonio Margarito, fighting on despite being as close to shot as can be imagined, scored a highly contentious technical decision win over tough and seasoned contender Carson Jones. Some other picks may be put forward, but to this writer’s way of thinking, this fight is fully deserving of picking up The Robbery of The Year distinction.
Heavyweight contender #11 IBF Alexander Dimitrenko (40-3-1, 26 KOs) surprisingly fought to a 10 round draw against little known replacement opponent Miljan Rovcanin (18-0-1, 13 KOs) on Friday night at the Edel-Optics.de Arena in Hamburg, Germany.
#2 WBA Lucas Matthysse and #1 Tewa Kiram will be fighting for the vacant WBA World welterweight title next month on January 27 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
The 35-year-old Matthysse will be moving up in weight to the welterweight division to fight it out with the little known Kiram for the vacant WBA 147lb. title.
