Video: Heavyweight Champions Tournament
A question as old as the sport itself: what would happen if the best of the best fought one another? The question, however, takes on a whole new meaning as time goes on and eras see separation.

From 1947 to 1954, heavyweight history received a timeless series of sagas to behold. I’ve seen much coverage (my own none-withstanding) of the Five Kings rivalries (Leonard, Hearns, Hagler, Durán, Benítez) but not much covering the specific four man masterclass of rivalries that headlined and closed the “Black & White Age”.

Though he didn’t officially announce he was finished as a fighter for another seven months, Rocky Marciano had his final fight on this day in 1955.
Tragically, as surely all fight fans know, the great Rocky Marciano lost his life at the young age of just 45, this on this day back in 1969.
This week – September 23 – sees the 70th anniversary of one of the greatest world heavyweight title fights of all time.
Heaven knows, the great Rocky Marciano was fully deserving of a long life, of a long and happy retirement. It didn’t work out that way.
July 28th, 1952 – Yankee Stadium, The Bronx, New York.
Unbeaten heavyweight contender Rocky Marciano, 41-0, met fellow contender Harry Matthews, a fighter who had not lost a fight since August of 1943, in a bout that served as a final eliminator for a shot at the title that was currently the property of Jersey Joe Walcott.
70 years ago today, the heavyweight division saw a classic changing of the guard, of the torch being passed from the former champ to the new star of the division.
