Kevin Johnson stops Francesco Pianeta in Germany, revives career

Photo credit @ringtoneboxing – More than a few fans may have been unaware that Kevin Johnson is still fighting, with “KingPin” announcing his retirement from boxing after his quick stoppage loss to Anthony Joshua back in 2015. But the former world title challenger is indeed still fighting, overseas mostly, and last night in Munich, Germany Johnson picked up the first meaningful win of his career in quite some time in stopping Francesco Pianeta in the seventh-round.

Anthony Joshua – Dare We Dream Of A David Haye Fight?

Anthony Joshua - Dare We Dream Of A David Haye Fight?

On last night’s ‘Rule Britannia’ show from London – in which the British world title challengers enjoyed mixed fortunes – gold medal winning Olympian Anthony Joshua (13-0 , 13ko) absolutely destroyed American challenger Kevin Johnson inside 2 rounds to send shock-waves up the rankings and further put the division on notice regarding his arrival as a serious player.

Johnson – who had been sold as having never been stopped – was expected to give Joshua at least a few rounds, promising he would deliver and be the Brit fighters biggest test to date. And on paper – he was.

Brook stops Gavin; Joshua beats Johnson; Selby wins; Linares defeats Mitchell

Brook stops Gavin; Joshua beats Johnson; Selby wins; Linares defeats Mitchell

IBF welterweight champion Kell Brook (35-0, 24 KOs) did what he had to do in destroying his opponent Frankie Gavin (22-2, 13 KOs) in six rounds on Saturday night in retaining his IBF 147lb title at the O2 Arena in London, UK. Brook landed a nice right hand that hurt Gavin. Brook then unloaded his artillery on Gavin until he slumped into the ropes.

Referee Steve Gray stopped the bout at that point without a count. The fight, if you want to call it that, was stopped at 2:51 of the 6th. Gavin was too hurt to continue. The referee would have done him a huge favor if he’d stopped the bout a couple of rounds earlier because this was never a fight to begin with.

Anthony Joshua : “I’m Happy My Hype Train Is On The Road”

Anthony Joshua : "I'm Happy My Hype Train Is On The Road"

Big punching British heavyweight sensation Anthony Joshua (12-0, 12ko) has spoken out ahead of Saturday’s fight with American veteran Kevin Johnson to respond to the “Kingpin’s” assertion that the gold medal winning Olympian is nothing more than a ‘media hype-job.’

35 year old Johnson, who in promoting the fight has laughably stated he is the future of the heavyweight division – is likely going to get stopped for the first time in his career by AJ, who, in a sure sign of what’s expected – has already got his next fight penciled in – for July 18th in Manchester against a TBA opponent.

Anthony Joshua Is A 'Media Hype-Job' Says Johnson

Eddie Hearn is indeed building up Anthony Joshua (12-0, 12ko) as the next British heavyweight boxing hero and it’s true that his hopes for the London 2012 Olympic medalist are extremely high.

The unbeaten knock out artist is arguably the future “face” of the Matchroom Boxing brand and Hearn is praying Joshua will capture the public imagination in much the same way fellow Brit Frank Bruno once did in terms of his enormous popularity – and he believes the Watford man can emulate what Hall Of Famer Lennox Lewis did in terms of his extraordinary 3x world title winning career.

Anthony Joshua injured, fight with Kevin Johnson off

Anthony Joshua injured, fight with Kevin Johnson off

British heavyweight Anthony Joshua (10-0, 10 KOs) will need to take some time off to heal a back injury he sustained in his last fight against Michael Sprott. The injury to the 25-year-old Joshua’s back means that his fight against American Kevin Johnson will be canceled for January 31st.

Joshua has a stress fracture in his back from his 1st round stoppage win over the 39-year-old Sprott two months ago on November 22nd. Joshua did something during the fight that tweaked his back, and he’s been slow healing ever since then. It goes without saying that Joshua should have taken some time off from the gym rather than getting back into training recently.

Can Kevin Johnson throw a wrench in the plans for a Fury vs Chisora rematch stadium fight?

Can Kevin Johnson throw a wrench in the plans for a Fury vs Chisora rematch stadium fight?

This Saturday night from the Copper Box Arena in London Dereck Chisora and Tyson Fury will be featured in stay busy fights on Box Nation.

Ok so maybe that’s not how long time U.K. promoter Frank Warren would want it phrased but that’s exactly what this card is and for those who are hardcore enough (or just bored) it will be televised here in the states by Intergrated Sports with an asking price starting at 24.99.

I can hardly blame any boxing fan for not wanting to put his or hers hard earned duckets down for this PPV.

It’s worth mentioning that in the past Intergrated Sports have at least tried to put on entertaining undercard fights to make up for a non pay per view worthy main event or co-features in this case.
