Macklin could be next for Golovkin

martinez4545 A fight between WBA middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KO’s) and Matthew Macklin (26-4, 23 KO’s) is being discussed for the summer in June. Golovkin wants a high profile opponent and the 30-year-old “Mack the knife” Macklin fits that bill.

Golovkin’s management wants the Macklin fight and it now remains to be seen whether Macklin will agree to the fight. He recently had nose surgery and he’s only fought once in the past year, so there may be concern on his part that he might not be ready for a fighter in Golovkin’s talent level by June.

Macklin stopped Joachim Alcine in the 1st round last September, and before that Macklin was stopped in the 11th round by Sergio Martinez in March of last year. It’s good that Macklin rebounded from that defeat to destroy Alcine but that doesn’t mean much because Alcine is up there in age and he’s not in the class of Golovkin.

Live from Salle Des Etoiles in Monte Carlo, Monaco, current WBA and IBO Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin (26-0, 23 KOs) needed just a little over eight minutes to hand the usually durable Nobuhiro Ishida (24-9-2, 9 KOs) his first knock-out loss in 35 professional bouts.

Triple G’s 23rd knock-out as a prizefighter occurred only nine weeks after his previous stoppage victory over Junior Middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado, which happened on January 19th in Madison Square Garden in New York City.

A surprisingly aggressive Ishida claimed his spot in the center of the ring and attempted to dictate the pace of the action by working his long, rangy jab in round one. Ishida held his own during the first three minutes of the contest, while the incumbent champ circled the tall Japanese fighter to find openings for his own jab and straight right hand. Both men landed good shots and showed their respective beards in the opening stanza.

vera2 By Joseph Herron – After WBA Middleweight Champion Gennady Golovkin’s methodical and impressive seven round destruction of customary Junior Middleweight contender Gabriel Rosado on January 19th, the Kazakhstani’s promoter, Tom Loeffler and K2, issued a statement announcing that the stone-fisted title holder would follow up his TKO performance on March 30, 2013.

While a challenger for the upcoming event has not yet been determined, perennial Middleweight contender and Texas native Bryan Vera (21-6, 12 KOs) has declared a genuine interest in facing the most avoided fighter in the packed 160 pound weight class.

“That’s the fight we originally wanted,” claims the 31 year old fighter. “We were being considered for the January 19th slot but ultimately didn’t land the fight. Team Golovkin and HBO decided to go with Gabriel Rosado instead. But we’re still hopeful that a championship opportunity against Gennady will happen in the near future. I would really love that fight.”

Golovkin to fight in March, Barker a possibility

rosado1 By Joseph Herron – Gennady Golovkin (25-0, 22 KOs) successfully retained his WBA Middleweight Championship with a technical stoppage over a lively but overmatched Gabriel Rosado (21-6, 13 KOs) at the 2:46 mark of round seven.

The decision to stop the contest was made by Rosado’s trainer and friend, Billy Briscoe, when it became abundantly clear that the courageous Philly native’s vision was being impaired by a horrid gash over his left eye. After bleeding profusely for the majority of the seven round contest, the 27 year old fighter stopped being competitive and shifted gears into survival mode throughout the final stanza of the halted bout.

While the stoppage was unanimously supported by those at ringside, it was also collectively understood that Golovkin’s second consecutive HBO appearance was much more competitive than most fight pundits and boxing scribes had anticipated.

golovkin22 By Peter Wells: After a great night of boxing on Friday night for all UK fans on Boxnation followed by one of the best Prizefighters to date, the whole world was treated to another great nights action to round off a superb weekend. Boxing 2013 has well and truly kicked off, after a triple-header full of explosive punchers.

To kick off the three world title fights was the fight of the night between pressure fighter Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez and the powerful counter puncher Juan Carlos Burgos. It was to be another classic instalment to the Puerto Rico-Mexico rivalry.

The challenger for the WBO Super Featherweight title, Burgos, started the faster, but both fighters landed heavy blows in the first round. It was an exciting round where Burgos’ quick combinations won the round over Martinez’ single big right hands. The fight stayed relatively in the centre of the ring where Burgos had his most success but occasionally the champion would force his younger foe onto the ropes where he would later have huge success.

Four rounds gone and although the fight hadn’t quite caught fire, Burgos seemed to have taken all the rounds, which invoked a response from the champion in the fifth. Martinez started to force the pace more but Burgos had plenty of success too. Martinez banged his chest whenever Burgos landed a solid punch, calling for the challenger to engage in a brawl that would suit the champion down to the ground.

Golovkin-Rosado: Gennady with chance to prove he’s not just hype

golovkinmedia-1 By Jeff Sorby: Right now a lot of boxing fans believe that WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) isn’t as good as all the hype built up about him by his trainer Abel Sanchez and a number of boxing writers who think he walk on water.

To be sure, Golovkin does appear to hit hard, but he’s wide open defensively, he’s easy to hit, and he’s not very big for the weight class in comparison to the other top middleweights. Golovkin looks more like a junior middleweight than a legit middleweight. He’s able to make up for his lack of size by having good – not great – power.

Golovkin doesn’t look like he’s in the same class as Sergio Martinez or Julio Cesar Chavez Jr, and those are the guys that he badly wants to fight so that he can prove that he belongs in the same class as them.

Golovkin will be facing junior middleweight Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) on January 19th at Madison Square Garden in New York. While most boxing fans see Rosado as having next to no chance in this fight, he still has a reasonably good chance of winning the fight if he can take Golovkin’s occasional bomb and land enough shots of his own to get the win. Golovkin took a lot of punishment in his fight with Kassim Ouma two years ago in stopping him in the 10th round, and Rosado is at least as good as Ouma is, if not better. Ouma was fighting Golovkin to a standstill at the time that Golovkin finally starched him in the 10th.

Rosado: I’m going to KO Golovkin in the 9th round

By Jeff Sorby: Gabriel Rosado (21-5, 13 KO’s) likes to hear that no one is giving him a chance against WBA World middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (24-0, 21 KO’s) on January 19th in Madison Square Garden, in New York. The 26-year-old Rosado draws motivation from boxing fans who think he’ll be knocked out by the hard hitting Golovkin.

Rosado wants to prove them wrong and he things he can stop Golovkin in the 9th round while dominating him the entire fight.

Rosado said to RingTV “No one thinks I can beat Golovkin. I embrace the fact that people talk and don’t think I’m supposed to win. I’m going to knock him out in the 9th round, because I think he underestimates me. I don’t know why, but I think he is going to pay for that. He’s supposed to be the next treat thing.”

Whatever helps Rosado motivate himself for the fight the better it is for him. However, I doubt Golovkin is underestimating him or looking past him. He’s taking the fight seriously as he does all of his fights. He’s not going to slack of just because Rosado has been beaten in the only fight where he stepped up against a decent quality fighter in Alfredo Angulo. Maybe it was just a fluke thing that Angulo knocked Rosado out in the 2nd round in the process of knocking him down three times in the fight.
