te tumbo-“but why not SRMINIMO?” Then you’re only out for Rican blood. I do agree, Cotto is undersized for both Canelo and Golovkin. I think the fight with Canelo will happen, but I think Canelo will prove much bigger than Maravilla once they’re in there. And the fight with Lara (although I personally think Lara won the fight) proved Canelo is finally coming to terms with what he needs to be in the ring: a come forward monster. That’s bad news for Cotto, because I think Cotto can hang with Canelo if the fight takes place in the middle of the ring, but he’s in trouble if Canelo walks him down.Posted July 31, 2014 2:51 pm
I think Canelo would break down Cotto just like Margarito did in their first fight.Posted July 31, 2014 9:53 am

“BTW dude, you can’t say Cotto is undersized and shopworn for Golovkin yet just perfect for Canelo?”(?) but why not SRMINIMO? those are also the reasons i think that Cotto IS just perfect for Canelo. i never considered Cotto to be significant risk or challenge for Canelo beyond his prominent scalp. IMO, that’s all he’s got to offer. otherwise, the only factor that makes this matchup marketable is the lingering skepticism that many fans and some “experts” have about Canelo’s dominance. i don’t and a breakaway demolition of Cotto would do for Canelo what his dominance of Trout already did in the minds of true fight-fans: HE is the Man at 154lbs NOT Trout, Lara, Kirkland, and definitely not Cotto.Posted July 30, 2014 2:27 pm

I’m a g man fan. I’d like to see him take on heavier hitters to see how he reacts to power. That’s my question mark on him. Alvarez would be fun to watch. Cotto – Naah he’d be overpowered. Now that Martinez is fighting on I’d like to see that match up too, hoping Martinez can get very fit is the caveat though. There is no way G man and floyd will fight. MW is too small and as very good as he is, it’s a stretch due to body size.Posted July 30, 2014 5:20 am

GGG has a good crowd but not big enough to do a ppv. The ratings werent that good for thr geale fight because no one knew Geale. Just like Canelo wants to fight on those Mexican holidays. The choice of opponent is very importantPosted July 29, 2014 10:06 pm

“In contrast, Ward has very few options and he knows it.”-YES the whole WORLD knows it. He’s become the 2nd BEST Boxer in the Sport at a very YOUNG age. Thats why everyone is SCATTERING away until he gets REALLY REALLY rusty. Because when he’s SHARP there’s no shot at beating him. His Jab vs. Rodriguez was the BEST display since PRIME Holmes. Took on a BIGGER Undefeated Fighter and Jabbed him into a mental KO. That’s called MASTERY.Posted July 29, 2014 9:39 pm
“Boxtradamus how many times do you need to hear it you retard? Golovkin is staying at 160 so he can clean up that division. He has plenty of options.”-He only SAID that because Chavez Jr. wouldn’t take it at 168. Golovkin was ON BOARD to take Chavez Jr. at 168 but not Ward. Ward makes the man concentrate on 160. That speaks VOLUMES. When all you have to DO is change one name out and put another name IN at the SAME weight and the opposite guy changes his TUNE that’s called being plain SCARED……Why else would you completely change your TUNE when you’re facing the guy at the SAME weight that you were going to face the OTHER guy?????
Golovkin respects the GOLD Medalist from the Olympics and current 168lb KING Andre Ward.Posted July 29, 2014 9:36 pm

te tumbo- Agree with everything you’re saying. Canelo has chosen the path of most resistance even though he really could have coasted for a couple more years and still had a huge fan base. GGG, who NEEDS breakout performances the likes of which made Pacquiao a star, seems ready to coast along until he hits some kind of pay dirt. And I don’t buy the argument that everybody wants to fight Canelo but no one wants to fight GGG, because Lara called both out, but it was Canelo who stepped up. BTW dude, you can’t say Cotto is undersized and shopworn for Golovking yet just perfect for Canelo. It just brings down the rest of your argument.Posted July 29, 2014 8:33 pm

i would LOVE for Golovkin to issue a former challenge to Canelo (or Ramirez) they way he has for Cotto but it’s obvious that he continues to be handled very carefully with an aversion to risk and Canelo (or Ramirez) would definitely test if not exceed the very limits of Golovkin’s ability.Posted July 29, 2014 4:53 pm
Canelo will KTFO of GGG between 154lbs and 160lbs. in fact, Canelo would be the strongest middle Golovkin’s ever faced at 160lbs. instead, Golovkin is trying to steal Canelo’s ripe and juicy cherry by targeting Cotto(?!?) who Canelo has been challenging for over a year now. i’ve decided that “Zurdo” Ramirez is the test that Golovkin needs and will prove whether he’s any better than any other promising contender. IMO, the risk involved with facing either Canelo or Ramirez exceed’s Team GGG’s risk-threshold, which is why he’s targeting Cotto instead . . . for Less money.Posted July 29, 2014 4:45 pm

I think he could beat both Ward and Froch. At least Froch. But I’m not sure. He just hunts down and destroys his opponents so easily that it’s difficult to say whether he’s that good and his punches so powerful, or if the opponents really suck as some people here are suggesting.Posted July 29, 2014 2:27 pm
KOornerman I agree that Ward would face him and beat him but with him having contractual disputes he won’t be fighting for a while and I can honestly see K2 steering GGG well away from that fight until a few years down the line. Froch vs GGG would be a mega fight in the UK and a genuine 50/50 fight.Posted July 29, 2014 1:49 pm

All the focus on “GGG being so avoided” is growing tired.. I know it excites the senses of some who use this as a proxy for beating guys in the ring… Golovkin will get his chances if he keeps winning and is willing to perhaps move out of his comfort zone… When Mayweather who was the Universal BEST fighter of the sport wanted to go to the next level he moved up to 154 and fought Oscar while giving in to his demands… When Pac Man wanted to go to the next level he jumped 2 weight classes and fought Oscar to make it happen… When Hopkins wanted the BIGGEST payday of his career he dropped to 157 and he faced Oscar…. Golovkin can stay at 160 and discuss no one stepping up but he might have to be the guy that steps up and chases more lucrative opportunities he is NOT 24 like Canelo… Cotto is a 4 weight Champion and he is in the BEST position he has been in for YEARS as it pertains to a BIG payday against a name fighter… The logical choice is Canelo, there is NOT a chance in the World GGG brings in that kind of money at this point… Canelo and Cotto have BOTH been on PPV more than once… GGG will just have to wait his turn in the interim…Posted July 29, 2014 10:47 am
“Zurdo” Ramirez is a viable opponent that would also enable Golovkin to retain his “A-side” status but of course,

NO way does JCC Jr. want any parts of GGG. He was slated to sign a few months ago and then went into some dispute with Arum, all the while talking about Carl Froch. So it seems he only has a contract dispute if GGG was the other person on the dotted line. This kid’s gonna mess up his fathers legacy, I think.
I doubt Canelo would take this fight. It’s a style that’s very different from Lara, and Canelo would do well, the only issue is could he withstand GGG’s power? Don’t know if ODH would risk it.
Same goes for Cotto… would Arum risk Cotto’s rise to the top by taking on GGG.
Quillin is the easiest target, and he’s got a belt. GGG vs Quillin. Eh, it could work, maybe at the Barclays, with a decent undercard.Posted July 29, 2014 9:57 am
Just for once, leave Mayweather out of the posts. The article is about GGG, not Mayweather.Posted July 29, 2014 9:40 am
I agree with the writer in that the three mentioned as opponents will not happen. But if anyone does step up out of those three, it will be Cotto. It’s very easy to look good when facing opponents at catch-weights such as Alvarez does, or fight guys that are on the down-side of their careers. GGG will easily beat any of three mentioned in the article and everyone (including their respective teams) knows it. That’s the problem for being too good in a division. Look up what Joe Frazier told Marvin Hagler when Hagler was middleweight champ.Posted July 29, 2014 9:39 am
Anyone who tries to sell Golovkin as a natural Mayweather opponent is just a CHUMP… Mayweather physically topped out YEARS ago… Lets see Golovkin accomplish 1/3 of what Floyd has… Call me when GGG is Lineal Champ at 175 after beating Adonis Stevenson or another top 175 pounder… Trying to get Mayweather in the ring with MORE guys who have massive physical advantages over him at this age is pretty pathetic and a testament to the frustration and defiance he has shown his detractors over the years… The loss they CRAVE has NEVER come so they have NO issue seeing him fight guys that will be LHW’s fight night when he will be no more than 150 maximum…Golovkin could fight 150 Daniel Geales and Curtis Stevens he will NEVER be on Mayweathers level… GGG will have to fight his way to the TOP, Floyd did not take over boxing till he was a pro for 10 years and he did it fight by fight division by division… People act like he came into the sport like Leonard or Oscar with a Gold Medal and the everyone in love with him…. He forced the publics hand by showing INDOMITABLE WILL, SKILL, COMMITTMENT and EXECUTION for close to 20 years…. These newbies gotta wait their turn…Posted July 29, 2014 9:25 am
Floyd does NOT have to go up to 160 pounds that’s ridiculous… The Roy Jones comparison falls Flat because Mayweather has titles in MORE weight classes than Roy and was Lineal Champ in 4 of the 5 he was in… Raising the bar for a soon to be 38 year old fighter is WEAK… Mayweather could retire today and he is an ATG hands down one of the BEST to ever do it….Started at 130 and his outboxing kids 13 years his junior at JMW 18 years later…Posted July 29, 2014 9:17 am
GGG should just fight Ward or STFU.Posted July 29, 2014 6:25 am
The author hasn’t researched his facts very well. Golovkin doesn’t hold the WBO middleweight title.
Whilst Golovkin’s team insist that they would be willing to fight anyone from 154 to 175 lbs, his own promoter Tom Loeffler says that Gennady is going to want an a “big chunk of money” to move up to super-middleweight to face Andre Ward and the money is just not there.
So Tom Loeffler is willing for Golovkin to “be the B-side against the top guys” in order to make the big fights happen, but they’re just not willing to do this for Andre Ward? Talk is cheap!
Did the author not bother to research this?Posted July 29, 2014 5:28 am
Ward would smother his azz and not give him the room to throw and rough him up on the inside like the Kessler and Froch fight, not pretty to watch at all but deadly effective.Posted July 29, 2014 5:06 am
If Floyd wanted to test his greatness like Jones jr did going up to heavyweight because NO_ONE at his weight could challenge him(like the Floyd situation) then he should win a belt at @160 and shut us all up, rematch with Cotto @160Posted July 29, 2014 4:47 am
GGG should fight his way up the WBC rankings until he’s mandatory and put Cotto in a fight me or vacate situation, no top guy wants the shame of vacating to another top guy.Posted July 29, 2014 4:44 am
Grant I agree with all you said there apart from the last bit, I think there would be a few Super Middles that would fight him and win, Ward for one.Posted July 29, 2014 4:40 am
The “other” Champions want NO part of GGG, that’s what sucka about boxing, these “other Champions” simply wouldn’t be Champions if there was only one belt.Posted July 29, 2014 4:38 am
Golovkin hard to match up as other fighters will only go near him if it is worth it financially. Curtis Stevens stock rose after putting up a gutsy display against GGG but was soundly beaten. Quillan won’t be fighting him soon as he fights on Showtime for Golden Boy and Cotto is one of the big names of the sport and will go where the biggest money is as he only has a few more fights left. I can see Cotto fighting Alvarez next at 155 pounds probably announcing it as a fight for the middleweight championship of the world at 5 pounds below the weight but that’s another topic all together. Quillan is scheduled to fight Andy Lee which I expect him to win by ko. In my honest opinion I can see Golovkin fighting Soliman next in a unification fight as Soliman ain’t no spring chicken and will try and cash in on his world title. GGG will knock him out as well but his stock will rise once again with 2 title bels around his waist. You can say move up in weight and get the bigger fights but nobody wants to fight him at middleweight or even light middle and super middle so his options are quite limited.Posted July 29, 2014 4:00 am

GGG is good, very good. Time will tell how good he really is. He knocks people out, I believe he is great and will beat everybody in the middleweight division and Canelo/Cotto too.
Golovkin wants Cotto next, he would knock Cotto out, but first he will fight Soliman for a unification fight, winning another title will give him more power for a big fight., Golovkin wants Cotto now, but Cotto is afraid, very afraid. Golovkin also said that he would come all the way down to 154 and fight Void, but Void is a damned coward and will not fight him, nor will he fight Pac.

Golovkin looks like he’s going to get locked out again. Soliman is saying “next year” (I’m sceptical as to whether he can hold onto his belt for that long), Cotto is unlikely to look his way, and despite Oscar’s recent media-whoring Quillin will continue to pretend Golovkin doesn’t exist.
I understand Team Golovkin seem to want to unify 160 and that this would be beneficial when negotiating fights later on… but there’s no point hanging around if no other 160lb champion is willing to step in the ring. GGG ain’t young, so he has a limited timespan left in his career… he simply can’t risk being sidelined again.
I reckon he should skip straight to 168. I know he “shouldn’t have to”, but it’s just the nature of the business. If he wants big fights, he’s simply going to have to move to find them.
OK well Ward is waiting for your call.Posted July 28, 2014 8:50 pm

Golovkin kills the best Martinez then on the same night whoops Chavez jr. Cotto would want to be smart and do the floydPosted July 28, 2014 7:56 pm
I would also say that I am not sure Gennedy Golovkin beats Sergio Martinez.
Today, sure — Martinez is done — Martinez has no knees.
But I am not sure Golovkin beats Martinez from 2010 who beat-up an aging but heavy-handed Kelly Pavlik and then Martinez knocks out Paul Williams.
I don’t know that Golovkin beats “that” Martinez.Posted July 28, 2014 7:26 pm
Good win for Golovkin.
Geale is a good tough smart fighter with good movement and Golovkin looked good knocking him out.
Having said that, I am not sure Golovkin — or the public — is ready for Golovkin vs. Chavez or Golovkin vs. Alvarez or Golovkin vs. Cotto.
In terms of fan interest, Golovkin only drew 9,000 into Madison Square Garden — Golovkin is not yet a major attraction who can fill-up an arena.
In terms of boxing skill, Golovkin is very good — I don’t know if he is a great fighter yet.
Sergio Martinez — the previous undisputed middleweight champion had to work through Pavlik, Williams, Dzinzurik, Barker, and Macklin before the Chavez fight and that fight was a PPV event that I think topped 400,000 buys because it matched a major Mexican name with a proven elite fighter.
Pavlik, Williams, Dzinsurik, Barker, and Macklin is better competition than Proksa, Rosado, Ishida, Macklin, Stevens, and Geale — because I think Proksa, Rosado, Ishida are primarily 154 pound fighters.
So, I would not mind watching Golovkin build up his resume and get some more knockouts. Golovkin vs. Sturm would be fine. Golovkin vs. Solimon is OK. Keep winning. Keep getting big knockouts.Posted July 28, 2014 7:22 pm
