Not the cupcake opponent i had in mind for bum bum rios.Entertaining bout though not going to lie.Pretty evenly matched I say Alvarado pulls the upset if judges scoere bout correctly.

I see this as another bad opponent for Rios . I believe alvarado will outbox and beat rios. Rios is not a good fighter to me.

IMO, this is an intriguing matchup. i tended to believe that Rios had become weak and dehydrated at 135lbs and i was anticipating that he would look reinvigorated in a warm-up bout at 140lbs but Alvarado is NO warm-up. this is a guy who went toe-to-toe v. Prescott, absorbed several notable lumps and bumps, before finishing brutally strong with multiple KDs and the KO win v. a guy who had never been down before. this matchup will resemble a collision and i’m rooting for Alvarado to Punch and Sock his way to victory. he’s been doing all the heavy-lifting at 140lbs lately and a win over Rios will catapult him into the Khan, Mathysse, and Lopez/Garcia bracket, which he’s earned. Rios will live to fight another day IF he belongs at 140lbs and doesn’t absorb too much damage.

Fight Aficionado

Sweet fight here. Now we’ll see if Rios’ pressure style can hold up to a full blown jr welter. Alvarado is a beast at 140. Neither guy has much defense. Guaranteed rumble.

Rios will get his ass handed to him come fight bite can’t wait to see it happen.he’s gona get his head blasted Brandon is a hitch!

Excellent points. I’ll give Rios the edge as well for those reasons you listed as well as I just think he has a little more heart.

The Mad Scientist

Im going to give Brandon the benefit of the doubt and go with him to stop Mike Alvarado on cuts in the late rounds..Rios seems to have the better inside game and that’s where most of the fight will be taking place, Mile High on the other hand cuts and bruises to easy for me to believe his face is gonna hold up in a brutal affair..

You know, I’m just like any other guy who doesn’t like Bob Arum, but I have to mention this quote by him: “I think that for me, Rios against Alvarado is going to be a modern-day [Arturo Gatti-Micky Ward,]” said Arum. It’s funny for him to say that because that was something I thought myself as well. After I first heard this fight was happening, it took a while to sink in that it was actually happening. Then I tried to compare it mentally to other fights, and Gatti-Ward came to my mind. This is a really, really insane fight. This is what makes boxing so great. This fight is why MMA will never be what boxing is. And then we got Donaire-Nishioka which I didn’t expect after Donaire started talking about Acre. Very nice card from Top Rank. All I gotta say is Rios and Alvarado better do some neck exercises and they better have a great cut man in their corner.

Should be a gr8 fight – really want Alvarado to destroy the brat Rios.

This is guaranteed going to be the fight of the year. It must be insane for those guys to know for a fact that they are going to engage in a seriously brutal fight.

big head

this fight going to be fight of the year right here there styles is made for each other it a pick em type of fight it hard to pick a winner i never seen anybody get the best of rios while standing in front of him toe to toe and alvardo to so this going to be a close competive fight it going to come down to heart and who in better conditions in this fight if it one fighter that can compete with rios toe to toe it is mike alvardo im assuming rios going to be sparring with macos maidana for this fight

i got to say i like alvarado in this one. he is naturally the bigger man and i personally feel he has more power and skill. should be a good one though. alvarado by 9th rd. tko

Its about time he officially moved up weight but I bet he will just do his same ol s*it and turn up heavy.

Win or loss, Alvarado doesn’t need to fight until he hits 40-0 and keep making 40-70K undercard paydays.
He has a large number of fights now and good experience for any guy ready to fight current or former world champs. If he fights hard and SMART he has a shot. And it’s possible that the judges could do this one fairly. You never know anyhow no matter who the matchup is how the judges may or may not score.
Ward CLEARLY dominated Froch 11 rounds to 1 or at worst 10-2 but two judges had it close like 115-113.
Alvarado isn’t a tiny guy. He’s strong, so I think with the fighters styles, it’s about how smart he is when they mix it up.

Alvarado has the winning edge on this one. Other than that, Kingslayer got it right: it will be definitely the “FOTY” for 2012.
This format needs to be changed: the names need to be the yellow used in the date: the color needs to be same as the “comments” box used in typing. and the bold, electric yellow needs to be thrashed; and the lines are very distracting for name; e-mail; and website. What a horrible visual experience this format has come to be!

The Kingslayer

Sweet fight !! It’s got FOTY written all over it.

The Best!

I disagree with the author…… Rios will be stronger all around at 140, will also have better stamina because he will not enter the ring as weak, he should probably be fighting at 147 to bring out his full strength and potential. I also disagree that Alvarado is a bigger guy, remember Rios comes into the fight around 150-154lbs from what I understand. Rios is a superior fighter in to Alvarado , it will be a tough fight for both fighters but Alvarado will get stopped in my opinion.

we can expect another all-out action fight with both men trying to own the phone booth. Given his issues at the scale, “Bam Bam” will be fighting for redemption, while a win for the aggressive Alvarado would propel him to a title clash.

Kid Blast

Both men bring plenty of menace into the ring and likely would stage a throwback type of battle perhaps in the vein of Rios vs. Acosta or Alvarado vs. Prescott. Both are heavy handed, incoming pressure fighters and that spells K-N-O-C-K-O-U-T.

Yes, this will be a n entertaining fight, but I definitely see Alvarado winning. For the reasons the author stated along with the fact that Rios has never shown me the ability to dig deep and rise to the challenge when things get tough. Even when seemingly behind on the cards, he just keeps on plodding along at the same pace, but he’s been fortunate enough so far. I think his luck ends here.
