Pulev’s resume at HW is second to none of the other contenders atm: Convincingly beat Dimintrenko, Ustinov, Thompson, had no trouble with tough journeymen like Sprott, Walker, Rossy, Vidoz, Guinn. KO’d Skelton in his fifth fight, etc.

Contrast with Adamek, who in his last few fights has been fighting the journeymen Walker and Guinn, and had the robbery over Cunningham.

Or Haye, whose only recent victory is Chisora, who is not very impressive.

Wilder hasn’t fought anyone besides cans and has-beens, so he’s out of the question.

Pulev may have a low KO percentage, but that means that he’s got plenty of rounds under his belt for someone with 18 fights, so his relative lack of experience won’t be so significant.

Cracking fight Pulev is very under rated he’s best of the bunch of heavies out there even my man fury

Posted October 20, 2013 9:37 am

@ Tark – Then we will have to agree to disagree. : – ) The point that I was trying to make is that style-wise, a fighter who comes forward (and actually throws punches – unlike Mormeck and Chagaev) would give Wlad fits as he does not know how to in-fight or more importantly counter-punch. Big brother Vitali is an excellent counter-puncher (asked Solis) and both Adamek and Stiverne (surprisingly) fought very disciplined and counter-punched well against Arreola. Wlad can not fight off the back foot, and therefore I think that he would struggle big time against Arreola (who is also 6′ 4″ by the way). Once again, that is just my opinion.

Areolla never stops coming forward.

Doc’s got the beat!

Posted October 19, 2013 8:17 pm

pulev is indeed the most deserving but wlad beats him. wilder doesnt belong in the discussion until he beats someone. he’s a complete joke at this point. stop trying to fool people with this overprotected fraud. go and prove you deserve a shot. but like most americans he just feel entitled to one without doing anything to earn it.

Posted October 19, 2013 7:42 pm

I had stated at an early time that Wlad, who I generally like, was doing boxing a deservice by fighting fighters like Piannetta, Wach, and Moremeck, because those fighters most certainly were not deserving of title fights. Povetkin at least was deserving of that title shot. The idea by Mr. Marks though that Povetkin had never defeated a top ten fighter was laughable. Eddie Chambers, and even Chris Byrd at the time were top ten, as woulid I suggest Ruslan Chagaev. Wlad should fight Pulev next, since he is number one by the IBF, but the real hope is that Tyson Fury can score an upset over David Haye. While Haye should be favored, Haye has not been a very busy man in the ring, and this might play into Fury’s hands. Imagion that Fury stops Haye, something Wlad could not do, A Klitschko-Fury fight would be a very big event.

both bums.

doc…, “@TARK – I totally disagree with you about Arreola. A fighter like Arreola, who has a good chin, good power, punches in combinations, and never, I repeat, never stops coming forward.”

Arreola stops coming forward a lot… Whenever Vitali, Stiverne, or Adamek punched the crap out of him he stopped coming forward..

That was a lot of times because he doesn’t defend well… He’d get stopped again if he fought Wladimir… He wouldn’t stand a chance in Hell.

Posted October 19, 2013 6:26 pm

According to most here it would be more exciting putting a punchbag in with Wladimir. At least the punchbag will keep gettin hit lol….

Posted October 19, 2013 4:13 pm

2014 for Wlad: Pulev, the winner of Haye-Fury, and Wilder IF Wilder can beat at least a couple of credible opponents in the meantime, not shot used-up boxers and no-hopers.

Posted October 19, 2013 2:36 pm

Pulev will be next for Wlad. Oddly enough David Haye is #1 in WBA for a title shot with Wlad. That would be another boring fight. Haye may not want to jeopardize that #1 spot with a fight with Fury. But I do not want to see Haye/Wlad II because it = Boring !! And Denis Boytsov is #1 in WBO for a shot at Wlad. Who the hell is Denis Boytsov??????? Wlad better get busy with his #1’s in 2014. Pulev, Haye, Boytsov.

Posted October 19, 2013 12:22 pm

Tark’s right on the Wlad vs. Arreola—it’s Vitali vs. Arreola all over again.

Posted October 19, 2013 11:23 am

Steivern would just get tore up on the outside and agressively held and head pushed down if he tried to get on the inside. He has no chance whatsoever. I think the 6’5 240lb prerequisite for anybody having a shot at Wlad is probably accurate. Even that punching bag Wach was able to stun Wlad momentarily because Wlad can’t cheaply hold guys that are his same size the way he does to shorter Heavies.

Posted October 19, 2013 11:09 am

A hard fight for wlad would be with a powerful athletic tallman who have earned a title shot. Wilder is totally untested and if fury beats haye then he will give wlad a hard fight. Even at 6″4 pulev will fight it hard to get inside and he has no inside game. Pulev likes to fight on the outside which is bad against wlad

Posted October 19, 2013 11:08 am

Eagle eye I’ve been laughed at on this site for mentioning stiverne as a potential challenge for the klitschkos, but his size, power and body punching could make him as tough a test as anyone outside of pulev. Wilder needs to fight some proven competition, he needs a couple more fights that force him beyond 3 rounds. Jennings or Arreola types. His speed and power are real, but he needs to polish up his skills and be one of wlads last fights.

Posted October 19, 2013 9:45 am

another hw joke fight.

Posted October 19, 2013 8:37 am

Eagle Eye

Pulev should be next as probably earned it, plus best all round HW boxer to challenge Wlad, but he has very little chance. Pulev has great boxing skill but not as good as Alexander but at least he does have size and weight to handle the clinching and can box from the outside. But Wlad still has better boxing skills and speed and far far more power. There is no way Pulev will win the points decision and his KO ratio is awful. He really has little power so there is virtually no chance of him KO Klitschko. Shame as he is best contender at moment but will be an easy win.

Wlad has Vitali have pretty much beat everyone so nobody left. Deontay is a joke as he has only wild swinging power that Wlad would easily avoid and return with jab fest and a straight right to KO Wilder (I suspect he has a glass chin). Wilder will be exposed long before ever getting a chance against a Klitschko if Wilder’s team stop been scared and put him in with a top 15 Heavyweight like Haye, Stivirne, Arreola, Fury etc..

To beat Wlad you need a HW boxer with size (6’5+, 240lbs+), power (solid KO power), good chin, reasonable speed and all round boxing skill. There is nobody other than Vitali that would beat him. Even at this age as Wlad is in his prime and Vitali is coming down, I could see Vitali beating Wlad. But will never happen.

I actually think best match up will be Stiverne vs Wlad. He has chin and power. I do no see Stiverne winning but could be a competitive and exciting fight as he will be coming forward to wlad with power and chin to withstand a lot of jabs. You never know he may zap Wlad’s stamina and get a KO. I think he is the best chance at the moment.

Stoev Boev Huev

Wlad will kiss the floor? In your dreams… or you know nothing about boxing…

Posted October 19, 2013 6:23 am

Yeah. Chris also has no head movement and would be eating more leather than Wach. Remember how Walker tagged him. Little bro hits harder.

Posted October 19, 2013 2:53 am

@TARK – I totally disagree with you about Arreola. A fighter like Arreola, who has a good chin, good power, punches in combinations, and never, I repeat, never stops coming forward is Wlad’s worst nightmare style-wise. People can say what they want about the shape that Arreola “looks” to be in, but the fact is, Arreola never stops throws punches for 12 rounds. He reminds alot of the 70s & 80s fighters who all looked out of shape but could go 15 hard rounds without gassing (go watch the 15th round of the Holmes and Norton fight and you will see my point). Wlad has zero in-fighting skills and no counter-punching skills (unlike big brother Vitali who is a very good counter-puncher) which is why he always looks to clinch whenever an opponent gets in range. There is a reason why big brother fought Arreola (or Chisora for that matter) and Wlad fought Eddie Chambers.

Posted October 19, 2013 2:12 am

Chris Arreola would be a sitting duck for Wladimir… WK would probably stop Chris midway. Pulev would also beat Arreola, possibly stop him.

Adamek selected Arreola as a contender he could beat to set himself up for a shot at Vitali… Adamek pulled out of a fight with Pulev, who he probably doesn’t believe he can beat… Fury also reneged on facing Pulev…and I don’t blame him … Pulev and Haye are the best contenders in the world.

Posted October 19, 2013 1:39 am

Chris Arreola would give Kltschko a rougher fight than Pulev, in my opinion, reason being: Arreola is bigger than Pulev, faster and hits harder. Pulev doesn’t have the power OR skills that would bother Klistchko, enda story.

This article encourages the reader to be critical of the author. In one breath he is criticizing Wlad’s 4 previous opponents (including Tony Thompson) and suggesting that the selection of opponents in these fights has been disgraceful. In the next breath he is suggesting that Pulev should be given credit for beating the very tough Thompson (which incidentally happened via decision). In Wlad’s two meetings with Thompson he won by KO on each occasion. Is it just me or should we not be reading other more credible boxing articles?

Posted October 18, 2013 7:21 pm

Come on Wladdy, sign him up. Take care of business and then go on to Wilder. Pulev first, then Wilder in 2014. And Vitalis must sign Stiverne and take care of that business. Nobody is getting Tua so forget it. Lets get it on !!

Would be good to see but ill predict wlad would spoil it by leaning all over pulev

hah…basic skills???…the guy has GRIT like no one else…that will make the difference when they fight with Klitchko and that will take him to the top

Pulev is just a HW with basic skills and nothing special. He will find too many problems against the elite of the division….

Posted October 18, 2013 5:35 pm

that’s your opinion and I respect it…but I think more important than the KO stats and etc. you are talking about is the GRIT and Pulev has it in much bigger scale than Klitchko…that will make the difference when they fight

“Wladimir Klitschko (61-3, 51 KOs) has been widely criticized in these latter stages of his career for cherry picking his opponents.” – By who? Even Wlad’s critics can’t deny he’s ducked nobody and faced all of the top contenders available. Author smokes crack?

About time we get a heavyweight real fight between Wlad vs Pulev. this fight need to take place next plz. Would be a great fight.

Posted October 18, 2013 4:00 pm

I don’t see a KO in Klitschko-Pulev… I see a hard, tough fight. Wladimir is pissed after the Povetkin fight. He’ll be at his best and make a statement with a dominant win. But Kubrat wants to win and he won’t be intimidated. He’s dangerous late — so he’ll never give up.

Wladimir will batter Pulev but I doubt he stops him… Kubrat is one tough SOB. Taking the over might be a good bet here. If Pulev couldn’t stop Thompson he’s not stopping Wladimir.

Posted October 18, 2013 3:50 pm

@ corleonesi!

Pulev is ok! But if you belive that he will be nexg hw champ you better wake up!
He is hw but he could only ko 9 of 18 man… is that champ material ?
What is so special about pulev??? You say he is calm but guess what? Every fighter has something … wach had : iron chin, haye : speed, tiger t: expiriance etc… They all would bear kobra ! Wlad will knock him out 4 sure!

Posted October 18, 2013 3:37 pm

Pulev would interesting… Wilder would be better — potentially.

If Deontay Wilder gets the right fights to round out his skills he’ll be a better opponent than Pulev. DW’s team tried to get Arreola and Jennings. He called out Fury. Chisora fell through. He’s having terrible luck. His promoter is not putting big enough money out there to get him the right fights. You have to show these guys the money if they’re going to face a big bomber.

Wilder has size, speed, and power, and that scares people. Liston scared Patterson. Tyson scared Spinks. Confidence is everything. Buster Douglas never turned a hair after he watched the Tyson-Tucker fight, “I thought it was an interesting fight. Tyson is wide open. He can’t defend. Everyone says I haven’t beaten anybody. Watch me beat Mike. I’m going to annihilate him.”

When you hear a certain tone you think, ”This isn’t phony bravado talking. This fool actually believes he’s going to win.”

Deontay has a lot of confidence. A lot of guys are getting big money K Bro shots without beating top contenders. Why not Wilder? His record is fabulous. Line him up after Pulev. One shot can end the fight. It would be a pity if Wlad retired before he meets Wilder.

Posted October 18, 2013 3:18 pm

most of the people underestimate Kubrat…but he has an advantage that Klitchko doesn’t…he has a lion’s heart and unhuman ability to concentrate on his goal and he’s the only one who can send the “wrestler” Wlad to kiss the floor…..@Bitingpitbull>>>dude are you serious,or you just trying to impress someone to get a job as a comedian…you think we smoke something, but I think you are on heroin…Kubrat is much better boxer than Povetkin and as good as Klitchko…The king Cobra is coming and taking over the boxing kingdom

Posted October 18, 2013 3:18 pm

Stephen Marks

allow me to clear some things up:

1. I do not believe Klitschko is or was “ducking” pulev i simply am stating that pulev has been the mandatory challenger for quite some time.

2. At no point in this article do i say that pulev would destroy Klitschko, however, i believe this fight would atleast be competitive unlike all of Wlad’s most recent defenses

3. enough with the fres oquendo conspiracy theorists. its pretty safe to say he is not getting a title shot ever.

” duck ” anyone who’s over 5’8″ with a pulse ! Where did this guy
Marks come from , Venus ? Whom , exactly , and when did Wlad ” duck ” ? According to this guy it happened often and regularly .
Personally , I can’t wait till Wlad gets Pulev in the ring for a little
exercise . It will be a bad thing for Pulev , because I’m sure Wlad wants to wash out the bad taste out of his mouth after the Povetkin
” fight ” ! I’d like to see what this Marks write right after that fight !

First of all what are you all smoking??

We all know that pulev wont win against wlad!
Ok he has good size but thats it!
I respect tiger thompson but he had no chance against wlad!
Pulev didnt impress at all against tiger! ( wlad ko him in 6 round 2 years ago) … So how can he ko or outbox wlad?? Also who has pulev fought? Dimitrenko, Ustinov – b level fighters tiger t Solid fighter but he is little to old… Also pulevs ko ratio is 50 % that is very bad for hw! Vitali had 87 … Pulev hits like a little girl and you all say that if k2 would retired pulev should be next hw champ ?
Povetkin is by far better boxer than pulev! His resume, ranking and boxing skills are just so much better!

Posted October 18, 2013 12:56 pm

Both guys looked flat in their last fights…so it could be who shows up in top form.Ofcourse W.K. top form would school the tough but limited Pulev in his best night.

Posted October 18, 2013 12:50 pm

Yeah, Pulev looks the best guy left to fight a Klitschko. Wlad’s next bout surely and it should be a lot better than the Povetkin effort. I don’t see Wlad trying to duck the challenge. Pulev is big and strong too. Still, I pick Wlad to beat him.
Incidentally, Povetkin did have earlier wins over Chagaev, Byrd, Donald and Chambers, though his WBA title defences were pretty bogus, so this writer trying to do down AP’s right to meet Wlad is off the mark.

Posted October 18, 2013 12:44 pm

WK is so good that at this point we are just throwing HWs at him that have no chance of winning but deserve a good pay day against WK. It’s like the best anyone can expect to do in the HW class is to get up to Klit and lose and cash out if you will. Maybe thats why Povetkin held out all these years.

Posted October 18, 2013 12:35 pm

He earned his shot and I think he brings an unorthodox style in, kind of an awkward hearky jerky movement with a low left but a crisp jab and a good right

I think he can make Wlad very uncomfortable and reduce Wlads offense like Iggy and Haye and Povetkin did in the early goings but Wlad will find a way to win without putting himself in danger he will move he will jab and he will tie up in close

nothing Pulev does sticks out at me as an obvious dethroner of the champ but time might be catching up with Wlad who looked incapable of pulling the trigger last time out

Pulev might have just the style to slip the jab and counter with a right of his own something he displayed in his last few fights against big men

Posted October 18, 2013 11:41 am

Pulev is just as strong, and physically tougher than Wladimir. He’s almost as strong and tough as Vitali.

Pulev cuts the ring off well, and as he showed vs Ustinov and Dimitrenko he has a powerful jab that he can pound big men with. He keeps his KO power through the late rounds.

Pulev did look disinterested and flat in the Thompson fight. Thompson was only there to survive — and Pulev was very rusty after a long layoff with Adamek and then Fury pulling out of fights with him.

With Pulev’s relative lack of pro experience he needed rounds. The Thompson fight got him another 12.

Kubrat will probably come in at 245 for Wladimir. He’ll be fitter, stronger, and faster. As he showed against Dimitrenko and Ustinov, he’s good at stopping the jab of a big right-handed boxer. I don’t expect Pulev to win … I expect a good, hard 12-round battle.

Posted October 18, 2013 11:39 am

Wlad vs Pulev should actually be competitive. Pulev is another “jabber” and he has pretty good ability at getting that jab in and then getting out of range (without any need for clinching, I might add).
The fact that both guys like to be at range means that there won’t likely be a great deal of tie-ups.

Having said that… it’ll likely still be a boring fight. I just don’t see either guy taking risks.
Wlad will be looking to jab whilst trying to find a safe opening for the cross or hook, but I don’t think he’ll find it.
Pulev will stay just outside of Wlad’s reach and look to time Wlad onto a jab, getting back out, then setting back up for a repeat and rinse.

I think the only way we get any action is if Pulev’s jab turns out to be better than Wlad’s, in which case, Wlad will have to prove that he has a fighter’s heart and will be forced to gamble to win.
If Wlad wins the jab battle, then I’m not yet sure what a Pulev Plan-B would look like…. haven’t seen him do much other than his shooting jab style just yet (though admittedly I’ve only seen a few of his fights).

Posted October 18, 2013 11:21 am

Wilder isnt ready yet! He has scary punching power but isnt a complete fighter yet. However he does have a punchers chance!

I agree, Kubrat Pulev is the best opponent next for Wladimir Klitschko and we can just hope the fight will happen soon. Kubrat Pulev is the nr.1# IBF world heavyweight ranked and rightfully mandatory opponent for Wladimir. Others that have right for a title fight are Denis Boytsov with is WBO Nr1# and WBA nr.3# spot. There are talks of a fight with Deontay Wilder, well ranked with 3# by WBC, 5# by WBO, 6# by WBA and 12# by IBF along with 12# by Fightnews heavyweight rank BUT they rank Pulev as the 5th best heavyweight in the world after both champion brothers Klitschko, Alexander Povetkin and David Haye. I say Kubrat Pulev is the best choise of the bunch. I mean after him and Wilder, there is about 7-8 opponents worth watch fight Wladimir Klitschko BUT don’t have earned the right the traditional way like Dereck Chisora, Tyson Fury, Dennis Boytsov, Tomasz Adamek, Robert Helenius, Bermaine Stiverne, Chris Arreola, Odlanier Solis etc so the fights are there to happen BUT who will get there? I say Wladimir Klitschko should make his 16th world title defence to Pulev the next shot, Wilder the 17th and then the 18th will go to Tyson Fury or Dereck Chisora.

Wlad would kick Pulev butt. At least Pulev wants to fight the other contenders, pretenders and the best.

Writer is wrong. Mormeck did fight a tope 10 HW named Fres Oquendo and lost 10 out of 10 rounds in his home cooked decision. Fres was stupid for taking the fight and he got screwed. Klit knew that and took an easy win. Vlad could fight Fres who would whoop Pulev who is ranked in the IBF which is the 2nd worse alphabet and takes bribes for a ranking. Only WBO is easier to pay off someone. Pulev gets killed but Klit

Thanks for the excellent report Stephen!

dude, you obviously don’t know much about boxing. Not to mention that Chisora and Fury would not even score a single round on Pulev…

Posted October 18, 2013 7:27 am

Is this a wind up? Another easy night for Wlad.Pulev has no power,is straight up and the only head movement he has is straight back,Wlad will demolish Pulev who will be an easier opponent than Povetkin.Pulev had a hard time with old man Thompson, and only won because Thompson gassed in the later rounds.Wlad’s speed is underrated for such a big man and will have no problem knocking Pulev clean out in the later rounds.if Pulev had good power,he might have had a chance, but he doesn’t,this is the sort of opponent that will make Wlad look good.Tyson fury would be Pulev quite handily,so would Chisora.

I agree With this being an interesting fight With two long range boxers ,
It’s a good style match up and will not be lot of holding and wrestling.
Pulev is a very Heavy man but still light on his feet, his heavier then wladimir
