in other words he”s a hype job.

I think Alvarez is over-rated — but this author goes too far and is too stupid.

– Alvarez DID NOT look “really bad” against Austin Trout

Alvarez looked like a shorter, slower fighter against a taller, slicker faster fighter who focuses on defense. In spite of these short-comings, Alvarez also showed good head movement, good defense, he was able to corner the slick Trout and connect with some — although not many — combinations. He knocked Trout down and he won a tough close fight. I agree the judges got it wrong in that it was much closer. But that is a long way from saying Alvarez looked terrible. It was a good tough fight. Trout is a good fighter who beat Cotto. It is a stupid comment from the author.

In my opinion, it is fair to say that Alvarez is over-rated. He is too short and too heavy to have a long career. He is too short to move up to 160 pounds and 168 pounds and given his weight — he will be forced to move-up in the next 2 years or so. He should have focused on diet and roadwork and stayed at 147 for a longer time period. He would have had the stamina to stay with Mayweather. He may not have won — but it would have been a closer fight.

i thought most of you experts saw canelo as the man to beat mayweather.LOL.

Classic ripoff.

Should be a classic

To the Author:
Great article. I totally agree with all your main points. *And don’t get me wrong, I like Canelo, I just don’t think he is an PPV Headliner just yet. I think they are taking a huge risk with this fight being on PPV.
*I like Richard Schaefer, he is a smart businessmen. (Although he highly disappointed many boxing fans lately, including myself, in regards to saying Maidana is fighting Broner again in April. Maidana should not give him that fight. *Broner never gave Pauly one, and Brother’s first fight ever at 147 is a championship fight? Come on, Broner is a bust).
*Canelo is a good fighter, but he is still young, and the Trout fight was too close for comfort. We’ll soon enough find out.

I’ ll pay for it.

It’s easy to promote Canelo. He makes Mexican girls panties wet. We are gonna milk them panties until they’re dry! That’s why we are going to avoid a fight between Canelo and Lara at all costs.

Winner vs Kirkland!

I guess embarrasing himself last Semptember paid off for Canelo. He gets three PPV dates this year. Wow. Really messed up…

“FA, if that’s the case then it should be on regular showtime.” – Exactly. It would be a solid fight for regular Showtime but now we’re at the point where any halfway decent main card is PPV. It’s a joke.

hidalgo, agreed although i cant see many people paying to watch, theyll be trying to get every penny they can to afford to pay Floyd lol

Who gives a squat if this fight qualifies to be a PPV or not, or how well it does or doesn’t do as a PPV? Just make the friggin’ fight. People that want to pay for it to watch it will. People that don’t, won’t. It will still be a good fight no matter what boxing fans do.

Posted January 12, 2014 1:22 pm

As long as they don’t put a lot of money in the promotion and are not paying huge amounts of money to the fighters, depending on the views, 500 thousand could cover this. Remember all those weak independent PPVs Arum used to put on. He didn’t lose money on those. He didn’t make much but breaking even is much better than losing money. Now if they waste a lot of money on promoting this fight and lose a lot of money. Canelo will not be back on PPV unless it is against a marque name. And Angulo is no slouch. Will Canelo be able to handle the pressure that Angulo brings? I guarantee that all those posters who said Canelo had this improved head movement will be eating their words when this fight takes place.

I have total confidence that idiots will buy the ppv. I mean he’s a Mexican ginger! How many Mexican gingers are there?

if muppets stop paying for this ppv sh#t than its free.simple.

Posted January 12, 2014 9:12 am

I won’t pay for this one. I will try to catch a replay some where.

Posted January 12, 2014 7:19 am

I wouldn’t pay 20 dollars to watch this fight.

Shiffty Schaefer dont worry about money? He has got millions but it aint enough ,of course he s worried about the numbers…go back to investment banking .Hey Oscar, watch your back.

Canelo ain’t PPV material right now ..

Pacquiao’s 447G just proved losers don’t sell nothing at the flea market.

To me canelo lost a lot of respect after the mayweather fight. Most people were saying that it wasn’t going to hurt him, but not even showing up to a fight was sloppy and a huge setback. There are plenty of great Mexican fighters, I don’t think canelo is. Like de la hoya, when the time comes to step up in big fights, canelo will fall short. And he hasn’t shown that he has the heart to pull it out.

Posted January 11, 2014 11:30 pm

I really hope Cara de Culo Angulo pulls off the upset and K.O.’s this fake star. I cannot believe this is ppv. People would barely watch this on Friday Night Fights, let alone shell out 60 dollars for this crap.

Posted January 11, 2014 11:17 pm

I understand from a undefeated mexican American boxer that Angulot he felt was leading Lara at the time of the stoppage. However how much damage did Angulo suffer from that fight? This almost reminds me of Pacquiao-Rios, in that it is supposed to build up Cannelo’s confidence. I accually would like to see Angulo win, so that Da La Hoya and company will have egg on their face. I hope that the boxing upblic, and esspecially Mexican fans, don’t buy this event.

FA, if that’s the case then it should be on regular showtime.

Posted January 11, 2014 9:04 pm

Will be a much better fight than his last. Angulo comes after you. No potshotting business! Lots of bruising!

Tomato Can they already announced the undercard. A bunch of lesser known bantamweights are on it. Lame card.

Posted January 11, 2014 8:15 pm

He don’t care about PPV # and yet it is PPV.

PPV? You gotta be kidding

Mexican boxing fans know Canelo is not the greatest fighter to come along . and of course Canelo is not a great fighter yet .. but he is a Super Star . and Mexican boxing fans like him , they don’t think he is great they just like him because of his nature ,how he talks and how he looks ,theres nothing wrong with that . David Becham the soccer player was not the best player but he was the biggest Super star in soccer ,,The Beatles were not the best musicians but they were Super stars .

Posted January 11, 2014 6:39 pm

so schafer doesn’t care about ppv numbers or know simple things like if broner had a rematch clause vs maidana and oscars is the one in rehab……………

Posted January 11, 2014 6:37 pm

they feel canelo needs to rebuild his confidence. careful angulo comes to fight. at best a co-feature on showtime. not ppv.

Posted January 11, 2014 6:33 pm

Jack Dempsey

Golden Boy Promotions and Top Rank business is to promote fights ,but its also is in the business to make money , so with that said , Erislandy Lara is not a huge star ,he doesn’t sell tickets to his fights ,hard core boxing fans know who he is but the general public have no idea who he is . That’s why Canelo vs Angulo fight is being made .

Posted January 11, 2014 6:25 pm

It all depends on the undercard. Most people that believe Canelo is a superstar don’t know much about boxing or even about Canelo. His manager has done a great job portraying him as this incredible boxer and his fans have bought into this hype. But those who understand boxing and have done their homework to verify Canelo’s record understand that his opposition has been weak. He may as good as they implied, but he needs to prove it.

His fight against El Perro should be a good test for him, but PPV event is not. Some people may buy into the hype, but smart fans will surely stay away.

Once again some fans wi be looking forward to this fight. I don’t care how it does as far as sales, it’ll be better than recent top rank cards, so I’m sure I’ll enjoy it…

Besides didn’t Angulo give Lara fits in there fight? So obviously, Alvavrez/Angulo is a good fight. More than that, they’re both coming off of losses. So I understand questions why is it a PPV event. But I’m sure it’ll be a great card. Hopefully 2014 wi be just as good as 2013 was for boxing.

Schaefer has issues. This fight will do lousy, horrible numbers. Canelo hasn’t done or proven anything yet. Angulo is nothing more than a strong punching bag with a big heart. He presents zero threat to Canelo. Sure he’l come forward and run into everything but the kitchen sink. Canelo will be too fast and mobile. Why in the world would this be a PPV fight? Dumb and desperate move by GBP. Canelo will be set up to look good and continue to be a legend in the eyes of his Mexican fans that usually are the most devoted to their country’ fighter. Chavez, Olivares, Zarate, Sanchez to name a few. Bad move by putting this on PPV. Canelo will destroy Angulo and send him into retirement.

Everyone’s always complaining, about matches here… The fact is no business wants to sale all it’s goods, without having more to sale in the future… Angulo is a good match for anyone at 154 and Canelo doesn’t need to throw in all his chips right now with Lara and GGG fights. The kid is 25 with a good 5 to 10 years ahead of him if he’s not used up the way some here would like.

If they’re smart they’ll put Lara on the undercard. I’m sure the card will be stacked, so I’ll tune in.

Posted January 11, 2014 6:13 pm

Jack Dempsey

I really don’t think this fight will due to good in the PPV. buys … But it’s a good fight to watch and it can really be a test to Canelo Alvarez ,as he is facing a fighter that can punch pretty good and is very aggressive . People this is a great math up , it just should not be on PPV.

Posted January 11, 2014 6:08 pm

This fight is going to bomb… The fans want to see Canelo-Lara so this fight is a gigantic fraud on the viewing public.

Posted January 11, 2014 6:01 pm

He should be. The standard approach nowadays is to buoy a weak main event with a banging undercard. Maybe I’m underestimating how many Mexicans will buy it for the main but IMO there’s nothing on the undercard to supplement it.
