You shouldn’t reply te tumbo comments everybody know he is allways writing in canelos favor..for ppl like him is why we have to tolerate a canelo vs Lopez..he should be canelo himself writing thru a translator

I read today an interview with sulaiman and he said that he won’t let canelo to take another fight but the winner of Lara martirosyan..anyway i dont belive it..

Posted September 29, 2012 11:28 am

Canelo will fight only old or smaller boxers. He is a good guy , but his management is protecting him. It reminds me of Chavez before they allowed him to fight Martinez, which was a mega fight. I think Canelo will only fight a good fighter like Golovkin if the bout is for Mega bucks.

Posted September 29, 2012 1:23 am

Dude made a good point. Canelo is doing the Pacman fight at catch weights or make the smaller guy come up to your weight. Dude is 32-0 Sounds like a great match up to me for Canelo much better than some junior light weight trying to make 154. Where is Sergio he was supposed to calling out canelo at 154. Dude is right Belts are no suck get rid of all sanctioning they are not needed.

Posted September 28, 2012 9:42 pm

Is this a joke? I thought Kirkland was supposed to be getting the title shot against Alvarez, or hasn’t Vanes been a mandatory for quite some time now?
I don’t understand why guys from LOWER weight divisions get a shot at Canelo but not the legitimate 154 pounders. I hope Saul will fight the winner of this, I would be pleased even if it was Rosado, somebody that is a real JrMw

Both vanes & canelo are overrated don’t worry Lara & Sergio should clean up these tools eventually.

Once-Again, Canelo just finished challenging the top 154lb names but Williams fell through, Cotto was on “vacation”, and Kirkland declined the challenge. This Is All Documented Boxing Fact. you can ignore or argue with these FACTs all you want but Alvarez did his best to line-up a show-and-prove matchup and after his demolition of Lopez there are still no takers.

Posted September 27, 2012 11:22 pm

I Googled for other photos of Vanes, and I will say that you chose an unrepresentative photo that looks nothing like any of the dozens of images of Vanes that appeared in the Google image search.

Herron, if wins v. the likes of prime Campas, Wright, and Quartey don’t merit title-contention, then Lara is literally Yeeears away from matching Vargas’ credibility at the same point in his career. i actually don’t think that’s the case but i certainly don’t think that Lara’s ring-resume puts him in the 154lb driver’s seat as other posters on this thread are insisting.

Posted September 27, 2012 9:00 pm

To be fair, Alverez has been handled carefully this far but to make out he’s no good is ridiculous!

I think the kid has decent skills, lots of experience and will be around for a bit.

He’s 22 FFS and will in all probability earn a couple more belts in as many divisions.

you are once again ignoring that Canelo confirmed a matchup v. Williams. once that fell through and Cotto and Kirkland declined his challenges, he settled on Ortiz. that is not the profile of a fighter who is avoiding competition. Lara is not even as proven as a 20-fight Vargas who had already notched wins over quality opponents like Campas, Wright, and Quartey at the same point in his career. a win over an overrated Williams coming off his crushing KO loss to Martinez and an “MD” v. Molina coming off a two-year layoff at most qualifies as tested but unproven.

Posted September 27, 2012 8:08 pm

great card. garcia vs Lopez will be awesome!

Posted September 27, 2012 8:07 pm

EXACTLY!! All his fans says is “he can beat that and this guy too”, but you can say that all you want, it’s not true until we see it happen. Styles make fights! Golden Boy knows this, they’re not idiots, which is why they will steer Canelo clear of anyone who has a shot at beating him. Until he steps into the ring with an opponent that makes you say “ooh, that’s going to be a good scrap”, he can suck one!

Posted September 27, 2012 7:52 pm

Going with Lara…who you think?

Posted September 27, 2012 7:38 pm

WRONG dumbo! I’m a HUGE fan of Marquez, because unlike Canelo and Chavez…he steps UP to challenges and never runs from them, he’s fought the best over and over and over throughout his entire career. He’s a TRUE Mexican warrior. Can’t say that about the other two wannabies.

Posted September 27, 2012 7:36 pm

It’s hard to beat guys when they don’t wanna fight you, don’t you think? I guess you felt the decision against Williams was good huh? Everyone saw it how it went down, Lara was flat out ROBBED!! Canelo will go on to fight another Jr. Welter or Welterweight before he ever steps foot in the ring with a true top 5 opponent at 154. Now that cheating a** Berto is coming back at 154, maybe Canelo will fight that 147lb cheater.

agreed – Cotto is also always willing to fight the best, kudos to him and Trout

Posted September 27, 2012 7:08 pm

I agree Canelo is favored by WBC, It was clear when he fought Lovemore Ndou. Lovemore is a natural Junior Walterweight, the day he fought Canelo he had to use a stink (urine) toilet as a dressing room while Canelo team was given a nice good area. Lovemore’s team were refused to accompany their boxer into the ring. The referee didn’t allow Lovemore to fight his own fight, but giving him unnecessary warnings. All the judges were Mexicans, and it was clear from their 3 round scoring results that they already had some mandates to ensure that Canelo must win. The whole fight was organized and
Sponsored by Canelo promotion, the local media (tv) was more interested in favor of Canelo. Boxing politics is destroying the boxing sport……

Well stated, Fact…but judge slowly on Molina. He’s had no amateur pedigree and has been learning on the job…he’s been getting better with every fight.

both canelo and vanes are chumps…

Posted September 27, 2012 6:46 pm

The thing is, is that you could be right. Canelo could destroy any of the top 5 opposition out there. BUT (and its a big BUT) we haven’t seen that yet. His handlers won’t put him in that type of position, and its unfortunate because there will always be questions. CANELO is really really good….we won’t ever know how truly good he is until his handlers put him into a fight with top contender.

Posted September 27, 2012 6:45 pm

Thanks, DT…When you talk about Canelo’s willingness to fight anyone in the division, you’re right on the money. He’s personally wanted to fight Mayweather for over a year now. The legendary matchmaker and promoter Don Chargin has been guiding his path thus far. Don Chargin and Bruce Trampler are the very best at nurturing a fighter’s career properly.

Don has stated to me numerous times that Canelo needed to be saved from himself over the course of the past two years. But Don is ready to turn him loose now. Expect to see Canelo in the ring with the very best fighters in boxing from here on out.

Posted September 27, 2012 6:45 pm

I appreciate what has been said. I also like that Vanes was so candid. I like seeing the best fighter fight the best, and yes Canelo is coddled a bit. It’s unfortunate, because we really don’t know how “great” Canelo actually is because of his matchmakers. There will always be big question marks about his career if he doesn’t fight the best out there. Its kind of sad actually.

tumbo you’re speaking out your a## on this one.If anybody got a gift it was Molina.Lara is a foreign fighter always getting robbed it was a close fight but not as close as not knowing who clearly won.Lara trained 2 weeks notice for this fight & still managed to land the cleaner more effective punches. As much as i respect molina he should try wrestling or mma you don’t get style points for clinching this is boxing.I wouldn’t mind that rematch at all after all it’s Lara who’s the most dangerous/avoided fighter at 154lb not molina or vanes. The same molina will come in against a much improved Lara.

Posted September 27, 2012 6:00 pm

Vanes is correct in his assessment of the quality of Canelo’s opposition, but he is not in any position to talk – Vanes’ list of opponents is not excatly a who’s who of top 154 lb. But this fight w Lara could be a great fight and I am looking forward to it – both guys can fight.

Stiverne has power and I wouldn’t doubt it if both men hit the canvas in that fight. I actually like the fight between Arreola and Stiverne, but you’re right about the WBC and Mexican fighters. How do you think Eric Morales got the rematch against Danny Garcia when he was beaten decisively?

I love Eric and I wish he wouldn’t have taken this fight. I’m afraid with the confidence that Danny has at this time and Eric’s warrior heart, Morales could get badly hurt in this fight.

But you’re right on the money about the WBC…they have their obvious favorites.

Lol…hey there, Tumbo…how’s it hangin, brother. I think you’re missing the point of why I brought up the Middleweight opponent, but that doesn’t surprise me. Lara, just like Martinez and Williams, has been so avoided in his natural weight class, that he decided to move up for one fight just to stay active. When I spoke with his trainer Ronnie Shields, he thought it was ridiculous that his manager and promoter had to look elsewhere to get a fight when he’s ranked in one of the more packed divisions in boxing.

But, that’s how respected and avoided Lara is at Junior Middleweight.

Btw, he knocked out Ronald Hearns in the first round with a straight left hand. Lara is a beast when he comes forward, but usually goes the distance when he has to fight off of his back foot. It will be interesting to see if Freddie Roach notices this trend and elects to have Vanes, who is usually a slick counterpuncher that uses the entire ring, take the lead in this match-up.

It’s going to be a great fight!!

Molina is a very smart fighter who gives everyone trouble because of his ability to grapple with his opponents on the inside. It was an ugly fight in which neither Molina or lara looked good in. That’s why neither Golden Boy or Warriors boxing has brought up the idea of a rematch.

i recall Lara being gifted v. Molina. otherwise, it was pretty clear who won that fight. also, please name the “natural 160lbr” that Lara KO’d so that we can all praise or scoff at the quality of that win. otherwise, if names aren’t important, Canelo has KTFO of 19 more “natural” 147lb and 154lbrs, which is at least the equivalent of one natural 160lbr.

Exactly! moreover, why doesn’t he rematch Molina who he unofficially lost too? of course, you won’t read Titopa “coughing” over that inconvenient fact. can’t believe that with less than 20 pro-fights, one loss, and one controversial “draw”, and Lara’s fanboys are already insisting on the big-money “tangos”(?!).

Posted September 27, 2012 4:24 pm

The bad decision against Paul Williams, his draw with Carlos Molina, and his one punch knock-out of a natural 160 pounder this year merits his spot among the best at 154…did everyone forget that Lara is the man who got robbed on HBO last year?

Thank you , HHLondon. I’m glad you enjoyed the article. I had a lot of fun doing the interview as well. Vanes used to be trained by Ronnie Shields who is now training Erislandy Lara, so it will be interesting to see what kind of strategy Ronnie can come up with. This is going to be a great fight!! I just hope the WBC honors the winner’s position as the mandatory challenger for Canelo this time. They honored Sergio Martinez as the Champion Emeritus eventually, so there’s hope for this situation…I think. Lol!!

Vanes just as bad as canelo at least he’s willing to to fight Lara finally, how many times has he declined this fight.Does he know canelo’s not even the 1st or 2nd jr middleweight in the division?Lara makes a case for 3rd & possibly 2nd if he gets his chance vs canelo/cotto or both.Vanes not beating canelo let alone Lara that’s some wishful thinking on his part though.Every fighter thinks he’s going to win come fight night nothing new vanes just overconfident like bradley this clown will get his like jr/khan.Canelo like vanes has to fight the best eventually, you can’t hide/run forever.

Thanks, Philly. I would have no problem with the approach that GBP and Don Chargin are taking in cultivating their “Super Star” if he didn’t have the WBC title around his waist. It’s almost like they’re holding the belt hostage and requesting the highest ransom amount. Bad for the sport and bad for the fighters in the division.

Credit to Miguel Cotto and Austin Trout for doing the right thing!!

Good article. I agree with both Vanes and the author. Golden Boy is going to shield Canelo as much as they can to make him a superstar (not a knock on Canelo, just his matchmakers). Promoters are keeping the best fights from being made. That doesn’t happen in other sports and it shouldn’t happen in boxing. We need an international governing body. Vanes vs Lara is an absolutely top notch fight, and everyone involved with making it happen should be praised.

Posted September 27, 2012 2:05 pm

Ike, Vanes didn’t fight Angulo, Kirkland, or Lara initially because he was supposed to be the mandatory opponent for Canelo. I don’t know any fighter who would take on a top rated opponent if they realized they had a title opportunity waiting for them. That’s just foolish. Like he stated in the article, most people weren’t aware of the politics involved.

Posted September 27, 2012 1:10 pm

I’m sure Vanes and Top Rank will sue the WBC if the Don Jose doesn’t honor the mandatory position after November 10th. This is going to be a great fight!!

Posted September 27, 2012 1:06 pm

I don’t have any respect for Martiroysan. Yes, the WBC is crooked and favors Mexican fighters, but who the hell has Martiroysan beat? NOBODY! He had a chance to fight Angulo and Mexcio. He passed on the fight and James Kirkland KO’d Angulo. And while Martiroysan is facing Lara, he already passed on the fight once and originally passed the 2nd time this fight was offered. Martiroysan at best in his career will be a beltholder, not a true champion. He’d be content to own a belt rather than be a true champion and face the very best. Hope Lara schools him so i don’t have to read about him anymore.

The WBC has been sued before by a European boxer! So why not threatened them with a lawsuit again, Im sure that Jose Saulaiman would love another one his hands! Martirosyan Stop Winning stop complaining and sue the WBC! You deserved your shot at the championship a long time ago! Look at Martinez he complained untill Salaiman handed Chavez Jr over to him and there you go one less false idol down!

Hidalgo, this is going to be a great fight and you are right on point…we will get a least a little clarity into the packed 154 pound weight division. After this fight, Cotto/Trout, and K9/Berto take place, we should have a pretty good idea who will be the eventual winner of the 154 pound sweepstakes.

Posted September 27, 2012 12:38 pm

I hope Martirosyan beats Lara. Unfortunately for Martirosyan he hasn’t been fighting top level opponents. Lara will reveal what Martirosyan is made of and vice-a-versa. Regardless, I think Vanes would have taken Matthew Hatton out. But hey, Vanes wasn’t script to get that title. Canelo was.
