Ali-Evangelista was 10 times as boring as Klitschko-Povetkin.

Squared-Circle Real Talk (a.k.a. The Lion King of Beat Street)

The HW Division is alive well and better than ever!. It just to so happens that Americans are not good enough to dominate it any longer, so they cry and whine like SREDMOND and spew lies and propaganda about the division being weak.

As if a bunch of 6’2″ 210lbs guys from the 70s would be able to beat the Klitschkos. In your wettest, wildest dreams. What a joke!

Sredmond – what devision was holy again prior to haveyweight devision he fought ? Cruiserweight right ? Lol you in every article about klitchko twisting and posting garbage facts against klitchko … So povetking fought cruisers sand that’s why the devision is weak because there is no one in haveyweight devision left eh ? I bet if klitchko retires and never fights wilder
And if he becomes hw champ I am sure you will praise the he as a best devision out there … Lol

Max Kellermans need to enter Ring with Wlad, then we see if real excitement happen like Max expect to see. I think Max is really a cherry.

ugly but effective.

Posted October 5, 2013 11:17 pm

Hate to say, cause Im a big Wlad fan, but this one was really bad. The way things were going, Wlad could have dropped Povetkin like 2 times per round from 7th on, but was happy just leaning on him. Maybe he was worried about some Russian screwjob or whatever, but this one was ugly…

Posted October 5, 2013 11:11 pm

That is right Tark. Ali was the master of pushing down the head and shoulders. But a win is a win and Wlad did win the fight. It was a rough inside fight, and you can see that Wlad can be a rough guy on the inside.
Now on to Cotto………………….

Posted October 5, 2013 11:00 pm

Reality.., You’re nuts.. The fight was better than Ali-Evangelista or Ali-Lubbers.

At least it had 4 knockdowns and a damned good beating of a previously undefeated World Heavyweight Champion and former Olympic Champion who had never been knocked down before in a 25-year boxing career.

Posted October 5, 2013 6:49 pm

UJelly.., “@Brandon – “If you actually believe that the reason that Wlad is not shown on American TV is because he’s not popular and that doesn’t involve a dispute over money…wow.”.”

Wladimir’s fight ARE shown on American TV and they do very well… The Klitschko-Povetkin fight will be shown 4 times today in my area, so somebody must be watching it to schedule that many telecasts.

Now, if Deontay Wilder could get Arreola and Jennings into the ring — and score stunning late round KO’s over them — he would become a massive star and Wladimir would show up in Vegas to fight him.

It’s seems that American promoters can’t put great HW fights together.

Posted October 5, 2013 6:42 pm

TARK – write what you want but people who saw it know it was a boring as hell. Povetkin has NOWHERE near the power of Tyson and at least Lewis finished him off.
Sorry but that fight was terrible in every respect. US tv will never air his fights again I’d guess.

Posted October 5, 2013 6:38 pm

The judges did their jobs.., For once all the judges had all the rounds scored exactly the same and all of them agreed with Harold Lederman.

It was a super easy fight to score — because every round was so lopsided. The pre-Steward Wladimir would have been hit with a lot more punches — but he would have scored the KO or been knocked out early.

The height difference was about the same as between Lewis and Tyson, which made that an ugly grappling maul fest as well, where the taller fighter leaned on the shorter one. Lewis as also point deducted versus Tyson. Povetkin moves his head well enough that he never got nailed with a really hard loaded right like Tyson did. His conditioning was superb. He absorbed everything and kept coming, but he couldn’t land anything threatening.

It should be noted that Povetkin had never been knocked down before in 26 pro fights and 100’s of amateur fights.. He won the Olympic Gold Medal and was World Amateur Champion several times. Wladimir beat another undefeated World Champion at the age of 37 in hostile territory. Ali failed to beat undefeated World Champion Joe Frazier in MSG.

Also in contrast… Ali lost to a light heavyweight Olympic Gold Medal winner, who had only only (6) pro wins … when Ali was only 36 years old.

Having said all that… Povetkin would never beat David Haye, Tyson Fury, Deontay Wilder, or Kubrat Pulev — Wladimir’s nex opponent… Wladimir’s toughest and greatest opponents are still ahead of him.

Posted October 5, 2013 6:28 pm

@Brandon – “If you actually believe that the reason that Wlad is not shown on American TV is because he’s not popular and that doesn’t involve a dispute over money…wow.”

If there was money in it, the fights would be shown. There probably are disputes, no doubt… but if HBO thought Americans would buy it, they’d show it (i.e. it’s not like they don’t show ANY of his fights, just not some of them).
And I didn’t miss the point, because the article seems to be about American popularity, not European popularity. It’s an national-centric view of things, but that’s what it raised so that’s what I discussed. We can talk til we’re blue in the face about how popular he is in Europe, but it doesn’t change that he isn’t popular in America (whether that matters in the long run is up to him, but again, I’m just discussing the questions raised in the article).

And I never said HW division is dead… that’s putting words into my mouth. I know a lot of people say that, but I think the division is fine. There is plenty of talent (i.e. I don’t write off guys like Haye, Povetkin, Solis, etc), but the Klitschkos (particularly Wlad at this time) are so far ahead of the pack that the contenders seem worse than they are. It’s like comparing the remaining top welters to Mayweather… guys like Bradley and Marquez are great fighters in their own right, but they’re just not at the level of Mayweather (Marquez to the point of being made to look amateurish when sharing the ring with Floyd).
Fortunately for Mayweather, he can fight at heavier weights in search of potentially competitive match-ups… obviously (and unfortunately), the Klitschkos don’t have those sorts of options.
In all honesty, the only fight that’d be massively dangerous for either Klitschko, would be to fight the other (which we know would never happen).

Apathy is the right word, the HW Divison is deader than ever there are scant compelling matchups that offer real discussion… This fight is Wlads best opponent in years and Povetkins stock has crashed amongst the hardcore due to poor competition, clear ducking and struggles with Cruiserweights….Wlad might as well add the pudgy Povetkin to his list of victims at this point it’s just a payday…

Lennox Lewis had boring fights too, just like the Great Larry Holmes, Ali, etc. Oh yeah, Lennox had an exciting fight—against a Klit.

Posted October 5, 2013 3:07 pm

Yeah, that makes a lot of sense. Heavyweights around the world suddenly lost their talent as soon as Lennox Lewis retired. Sorta sounds like the plot of Space Jam. You know, where all the NBA players were robbed of their talents by little, animated aliens. Idiocy. Nothing happened to change the heavyweight landscape when Lennox Lewis retired, except that the best fighters in the division were not as dependent on HBO and other American cable outlets as Lennox Lewis was. That’s it and that’s all.

Posted October 5, 2013 3:03 pm

Heavy is dead because the current crop of heavies suck and have sucked sense Lewis retired. Exciting fighters make exciting fights Klits are not exciting silly as Fury is he still puts on a more exciting fight than the klits. lower weights rule this era Heavy weight division is in the dark ages.

Hey, the heavyweight championship fight isn’t in the USA, get over it.

There are worldwide fans as well, and apparently better boxers which don’t come from here.

yeah that’s the first place I called since its down the street and they said they didn’t have HBO–I kept pressing but they were insistent and then there’s the OSU game to contend with–thanks, though

Posted October 5, 2013 1:40 pm

Maybe this writer forgets there were only 2500 people at the second Ali Liston fight and likely not seen anywhere outside the US? Wlad is far from boring for those that actually py attention to the fight and watch his mastery. He really clinches far less than most Heavy’s but he looks awkward doing it, so it stcks out. Go back and watch Wach, Paineta or any other recent fights and there are less than 5 clinches per round average. Anybody that states it is jab, jab grab hasn’t watched many of his fights. That went out after the Iggy fight.

Posted October 5, 2013 1:39 pm

Did you try BWW?

Posted October 5, 2013 1:18 pm

I’m in the middle of the USA and none of these f– sports bars have HBO. And if they did they’d just be showing f— American football. Oh that I were back in the USSR! You don’t know how lucky you are! Back in the USSR!

Posted October 5, 2013 1:14 pm

Povetkin laid out like Chambers under the bottom rope and Wlad DQ’ed for illegal use of jab and right hand. We have a new champ folks! The belts are paid for.

Posted October 5, 2013 1:01 pm

I not quite as cynical as the rest of you. Yes, I’d agree that a close fight would go to Sasha. But if he get’s his ass handed to him, which is what most of us expect, I doubt he win, even if it goes to the cards.

Posted October 5, 2013 12:51 pm

And they probably wont care who notices either. They paid for them belts. This fight aint worth 25 million. How many guys have Povetkin just dominated and destroyed? 6 knockdowns may get Wlad a draw.

Posted October 5, 2013 12:45 pm

Is Russia that bad that Klitschko is gonna get cooked for sure on the cards no matter what?

Posted October 5, 2013 12:36 pm

Wow, you missed the point entirely. If you actually believe that the reason that Wlad is not shown on American TV is because he’s not popular and that doesn’t involve a dispute over money…wow. Personally, I don’t mind, but I’m tired of hearing the familiar refrain about the heavyweight division being dead. It’s dead in America. It is not dead in Europe. As I mentioned, Klitschko fights routines draw an audience of 15 million, which is more than any HBO fight in recent memory.

Posted October 5, 2013 12:22 pm

I’m a Wlad fan but I think he just sold his belts for 17million. He could knock povetkin down 6 times in this fight and he still won’t get a decision. The people who financed this won’t have any shame in it either. They just want them belts.

Posted October 5, 2013 12:14 pm

2 notable things. One, how is Povetkin being talked up like he’s the heir apparent? He hasn’t really fought anyone. Like I said before, Eddie Chambers painted him up and then lost a decision (which I think Fast Eddie actually won). And why is late money rolling in on Povetkin? Does someone know something ahead of the fight that we don’t, like “foresight”. The only thing I can say to Povetkin’s advantage is he’s fighting in his turf. This could explain why Wlad is looking to “fight like Tyson” (for a KO).

Posted October 5, 2013 12:06 pm

Wow, people are projecting a lot of things onto this article that it didn’t actually say. It simply asked questions why Wlad isn’t popular in the US… which he isn’t. That’s why HBO outright refuses to pick up some of his fights.

Wlad is just too good for his competition. It’s not his fault… it’s just that when you’re virtually 100% sure of the outcome of a fight before it happens, it takes a lot of the excitement out of it.
I wouldn’t clamour to watch a Mayweather-Guerrero rematch or a Pacquiao-Diaz rematch, and I get the same feeling leading into Wlad’s fights.

Having said all that, Povetkin is a good challenger and it’s probably the most interesting fight Wlad’s had since Haye… but I do think Povetkin’s style is just too well suited to Wlad for it to be overly competitive (though hoping I’m wrong so we get a good scrap rather than a one-side beat down).
I think the only Wlad fight on the horizon that I’m pretty keen on is Pulev… I think it’d be a battle of “jabs”, so may be dull at times, but it should at least be competitive.

Posted October 5, 2013 11:55 am

Im not a great fan of comparing past and present boxers, nor am I a fan of the klitshckos, but it doesnt take a genius to look at tapes and see that both these brothers are physically more advanced than any heavyweight in history, they both have sledge hammers in there gloves, theyre both smart as h3ll. Im a big larry holmes fan but It its clear to me that both these guys would’ve been too much for anyone. What would Ali have done against either of these guys?? They’re used to their opponents running backwards! !!

Posted October 5, 2013 11:50 am

The indifference is only coming from the Americans. Wlad routinely sells out 50,000-seat futbol stadiums, draws TV audiences of 15 million, and is on the Forbes annual list of top paid athletes. That doesn’t sound like apathy, it sounds like success…in any language.

Thanks , Kid Blast . Curly Q Howard ; Great post , great analogy of how excitement is perceived by different fans !

Posted October 5, 2013 11:10 am

What a ridiculous article. Now one will take from Wlad what he already achieved and this is being one of the most dominant and long reigning champions in the history of the sport. Wlad also faced an obstacle as in the Peter fight he was shaken after the last knockdown. And to say none of his opponents were elite when he defeated them is a complete joke. Wlad beat several #1 contenders, unbeaten fighters and champions.

Posted October 5, 2013 10:55 am

If Wlad beat up Hayden he would become very big in America.

Posted October 5, 2013 10:49 am

JOEY which greats did Holmes beat huh? Or Tyson? BTW all these us greats from past eras are a myth, if Ali wouldn’t lose to Frazier, nobody would think Frazier, Foreman and others were great. Ali just wasn’t good enough, he wasn’t head and shoulders above the rest like the K-bros and that’s why he and others should be considered great? Ridiculous.

Posted October 5, 2013 10:47 am

blue eye devil

Fact is, boxing is not a major sport in the US these days. The average person on the street here could not tell you who Andre Ward is. Soccer even less so, I guarantee you that 90% or more of the people here could not tell you who won the last World Cup. People here are much more interested in American football , basketball, baseball etc. That is just the way it is. I doubt Wlad loses any sleep over it. The rest of the world knows who he is. if I had his success, money, worldwide fame and my only American fan was Hayden Pantierre, I could live and die a very happy man.

Posted October 5, 2013 10:34 am

Oh for god’s sake, I mean, for god’s sake…the “author” is actually taking the stance that Klitschko not being on American TV has anything to do with excitement. It about money and demeanor. Floyd and Hopkins are two of the most boring fighters, to the casual fan, in the history of the sport. Remember, I said to the casual fan. They are greats, but they don’t knock people out and their fights are chess matches. Yet, they’re on American TV whenever they want because they play the media game, they create bad boy, anti-hero personas that people route against. That’s it! Hopkins and the Puerto Rican flag, saying that he’d “never let a white person beat him…?” that was spectacle, and us idiot Americans fall for it every time. It has nothing to do with what these men actually do in the ring. Out of the three, Wlad is easily the most exciting. Hopkins hasn’t KO’ed a fighter in damn near a decade, and that was Oscar de la Hoya, a natural lightweight…for god’s sake.

be able to drink it . This Seaver guy , wrote some not-so great articles before ,
but this is a doozy ! His measure of greatness is the ability to get HIT ! That’s
he what creates excitement . Gee, and here I tought , that it was the other way around ; it’s your ability to hit the OTHER guy , that makes you great .
Oh well , maybe that’s why he thinks that Ali was the greatest , since he got
hit so much , by so many people . And here I tought that it was because
Ali’s defense really sucked ! Anyway this Seaver person , shouldn’t be concerned about the lack of interest in Wlad’s fights , this particular one is carried by 20 T.V networks to approximately 120 million fans throughout
the world . And the money is not bad either . On the plus side , nonsense

From weight-in looks like both boxers came prepared. I expect Povetkin to try hard and fall short. Wlad is just too good technically, physically and by experience.

Posted October 5, 2013 6:41 am

Tim Seaver, Seeing as two extremely dull sports, American football and baseball – sports which have almost no action for the greatest amount of time that they are played – are huge in America, I cannot accept your thesis. Comparing either sport to hockey to see which of the three provides non stop action, and it is obvious that hockey is the clear winner, yet hockey isn’t nearly as popular in America as either football or baseball. Compare American football to soccer, and once again Americans clearly prefer the less dynamic sport.

@ Adrian – Unfortunately both of the return matches with Peter and Brewster are not very good borameters. Peters had already been beat down by big brother Vitali, and was not the same confident fighter who fought Wlad originally. As for Brewster, he had been off for more than a year following retina issues. I in fact had the good fortune of watching the second Brewster fight live at the Koln arena, but unfotunately it was very anti-climatic as it seemed that Brewster had only come to collect a pay check…. no fire. All that said, I like a good/educated boxing debate, so I also appreciate your points. Peace.

Posted October 5, 2013 5:23 am

Thanks square !
Fan -pulev is for a top haveyweight out there after wlad not because he is undefited but I like his ring smart , I could see he is very experienced fighting different type of fighters and beating Thompson just proved to me he is a real deal but is he going to succeed against wlad if he fights him I all depends what kind of strategy he brings but he is definitely the one with the best chances to beat wlad in my opinion .

Posted October 5, 2013 5:19 am

Doc — ok but he did fight brewster and peters again right? So if wlad is the same fighter then how come he manage to destroy both guys who he had difficulties before ?? Now don’t tell me it was because Brewster was shot please …. The point is my friend klitchko can’t be exiting against smaller fighters he can either tkfo them if he catches them or make a hug fest not because klitchko holds is because he can’t hit inside smaller fighter but if you notice against tall boxers klitchko don’t hold at all because he can hit and fight even inside … That’s why I mention Lewis vs tua or vitally kingpin …

Posted October 5, 2013 5:06 am

You know what, I live in Australia, and the Klit brothers are my favorite athletes. Every time they enter the ring, they present better than the last fight. The effort required to do this, time after time, is proof, that these super athletes deserve the accolades that come their way. Americans do not rate them, well go figure, if being educated, dedicated and damn good is a problem, so be it.
Enjoy these two technicians whilst you can, and remember that clean living and dedication goes a long way.
My 2 cents worth from far away.

@ Adrian & Tark: The problem that most fans have with Wlad (not Vitali) is that his 1-2, grab, 1-2, grab style is just plain boring. Boxing is of course the “Sweet science”, so hitting and not getting hit is appreciated by the true boxing fans. That said, it is frustrating as heck to watch a guy that has so much natural talent and has devastating one-punch power (ask Chambers, Brock, and Thompson) fight like he is scared to death of getting touched. That is the main difference between Wlad and the other greats (ie Vitali, Lewis, Holyfield, Ali, etc.). Whenever the going got tough (bar the first Peter fight) Wlad has always folded. Now you are going to tell me that this was 10 years ago and Wlad has improved… but I beg to differ. Wlad is fundamentally the same fighter; however, he has been matched very well against non-pressure fighters. Example: Although Haye KOd Chisora and Wlad soundly out-boxed Haye, I think that stylistically Chisora….a non-stop in your face/chest pressure fighter…. would be a nightmare for Wlad.

Posted October 5, 2013 2:56 am

This pundit says.., “If, conversely, he gets hit and folds (as he has in the past)

Folding implies quitting… Wladimir is undefeated over 9 years with a long win streak.. He’s been behind on points only once in 63 fights. The thing is he’s from a former Iron Curtin country. If he were an American he’d be an icon — but he’s not, he’s a Ukrainian.

You say he’s unloved.. Again, that’s you.. He has plenty of American fans.. His fights that have been televised in the US on EPIX and other stations draw good viewership.. Do you watch the World Cup Finals???

Maybe not, since American athletes have never been featured in the finals of the Football Classic. As far as his fights been boring??? None of his fights have been as boring as Muhammad Ali vs Alfredo Evangelista.

the voice of reason

Rasputin – excellent post and spot on. This writer is yet another know-nothing spouting his worthless ‘opinions’ – REAL boxing fans know all about this fight and are very excited by it. The rest of the idiots who post on here should go back to the porn sites where theyre obviously happier

Heavyweight boxing is dead… in the US. So what? It’s just one country, a small part of a huge boxing world!

Nameless., I said for the casual fan, moron. I’ve been in the ring and I know how talented FMJ is . But if you’re dumb enough to think that the average viewer appreciates that…well, you’re just dumb. Every casual fan I watch FMJ fights with thinks he’s boring as ass. They tune in because they want to see him lose…that’s it…

Mr Seaver is a self-proclaimed idiot.

Second largest purse in the history of the division. 120 million viewers world wide.

And nobody cares?

Brandon, if you think Floyd is a boring fighter, you should consider MMA and c*ck-sucking. You’re in the wrong website.

“oh nobody is interested”, “not many people see/watch him”. NONSENSE! Anyone who thinks or said that needs to get with the global program. Literally MILLIONS of people around the globe watch/follow a Klitschko fight.

It’s my prediction that American fight fans will see the ATG that Wladimir has evolved into when they see him dominate and KO Povetkin, and appreciate him much more throughout the remainder of his professional career.

Idiocy incarnate. First off, there are plenty of boring fighters who make a mint based on PR. Floyd is as boring as paint drying to the causal fan. Hopkins hasn’t Ko’ed an opponent for damn near a decade, and that was Oscar De La Hoya…and he was a natural lightweight! These fighters sell because they are talents and they set themselves up as antiheroes, just as Floyd has done in all of his previous fights and Hopkins has as well. There’s a reason why old Bernard trashed the Puerto Rican flag….he’s a boring fighter and that was his stich to sell a fight.

Vlad’s weight is low for this fight, but he looks in incredible shape!!!!!!! I sure hope the Russian Mafia, or the billionaire does not try to influence this fight, if they do not do such, then we can trust to see more fights in Russia. The one judge is wearing an ankle brace?! Unbelievable!

Wlad’s size and reach should b 2 much 4 Povetkin 2 get passed. Only worry here is the fight taking place in Moscow….

And how many Russians will care when Andre Ward fights Edwin Rodriguez at 8am by their time? None, which doesn’t mean that the sport is dead or dying or even boring, just that America is no longer central to its destiny.
